Blueberry harvest is winding down.

The blueberries did very well this spring and produced pretty well for the most part. The main plants are done, they still had maybe 10 lbs of unripe fruit on them but stripped it all off Sunday and put it in the compost. I have to have surgery tomorrow and had hoped the bushes would be done producing by now so I could prune them before the slice and dice but the plants have their own schedule and they had to be pruned while I still could do it so the fruit had to be sacrificed. Oh well. The 3 rabbiteye BB are just now starting to fruit and the Sunshine blues are in full swing, it is nice having plants that are a bit later. We froze a bit more than 80 lbs of fruit so the plants probably produced about a 100 lbs, next year it should be 150 lbs plus and going to try my hand at BB wine making. Once I am healed up a bit the berries will be vacuum sealed in 2 lb packages. {{gwi:122893}}

I had a long list of things that needed done before the surgery one of which is finishing the Kiwi trellis so I was rushing around and when you rush.....still not sure how the nail gun got me, I know it double fired and I know my hand was where it should not have been.

It looks worse than it is:) I pulled it out, didn't hurt at all. Sorry if it grosses anyone out.

Check it! Awesome. Awesome that is that you did no damage to any bones or structure. Pretty hard to do with such a large nail. Your BB harvest looks great. I must research your post to see how many plants you have. :-D

You were really lucky there. Slow down and have a blueberry!

And, good luck with your surgery and try not to go stir crazy during the recovery.

BB, I have 360 degree spinning heads that stick up out of the ground maybe 8 inches and spray water up and out and hit the plants maybe 18" up max and cover 6 feet in all directions. I have never had fungus problems from it at all and on all but the young plants it hits just the canes and not the leaves as I prune my plants up. Not to say I have never had fungus issues as the plants in Florida always get fungused leaves toward Nov-Dec anyway. No mold ever....do get dog vomit mold but that is a different organism and is harmless. The commercial folks use over head sprinklers to water with and do wet the entire canopy so it can't be much of an issue. We do get a lot of rain as well and I am sure that wets the leaves:) This morning the water ran from 3 am to 10 am when the ice finally started to melt. The odds of us getting 28 degrees or under after February 3 is less than 20%.......but happens. In a normal year the plants would just now be starting to swell the buds.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Bill, I lived in Kanata so was on your side of Ottawa. As a kid, my pals and I spent many summer days biking on Richardson's Side Road, stopping to catch frogs and salamanders in the many ponds, collecting rocks in the abandoned quartz/mica quarry, or fishing for pike and catfish in the Carp Creek/River. Of course in those days it was a deserted rural road, which I doubt is the case anymore... Anyway, I hope the frost misses you for a few more weeks. We seem to have a got a reprieve here, with the lowest night temps for the next 2 weeks now forecast to be low 40s, which is good since 41F is supposed to be the average low this time of year. Definitely getting the yoyo weather here... high of 81F yesterday, 57 today. No mistaking what's coming though, the early-turning trees like ash trees already have lots of yellow in them and other trees are starting to get hints of colour now too. And in an early-winter year, even this can happen by now, haha:

Thank you, Jim, for the pics. of your mountain view, very pretty. Your Mr. Lincoln has so many blooms, so the blood meal & Brewer's Yeast works very well. We are lucky to be 73 degree today. Will pick another bouquet of Heirloom, W.S. 2000, and Carding Mill (has 10 buds/blooms). So glad that I bought 4 roses at $17 each (free shipping) from Heirloom ... just learned that they raise the price to $25 each per band !! Bolero rose is worth every cent... I wish I can find roses like that, but in different color besides white. Thank you, Jim, for the article on Rose Midge. I had minor Rose Midge on Golden Celebration early spring ... that's the only spring that I didn't dump new soil, or grass clippings. I'm going to rake leaves and dump around Golden Celebration. Cornell University stated that either too wet (flooding) or too dry will prevent midge-larvae from hatching. When I checked on rose-midge, folks in Rose forum reported that newspaper didn't work. Personally I think that spreading newspaper or plastic will hurt roses, since that block out water. I like eHow approach of dumping soil, or any organic material before the ground freeze ... that way eggs can't hatch in spring. Below is Pat Austin, blooms well in partial shade. It gets 3 hours of sun now, since my tall house shadows it during late fall. Pat blooms well, but it gets too tall in partial shade. In full sun it's shorter ... Damon, I'm surprised Danko didn't rate higher. Well, I should say disappointed not surprised. I was hoping a semi-determinate heart got high praise, because I suspect it has the best chance of working for me. Also, I am down to 17 plants from 60 and a couple of them are about to be removed this weekend. For me it looks like Champion and Red Beefsteak Heirloom (so named by Bonnie) are going to set a lot of fruit for Fall. I just don't know if they will blush in time. My two Sungolds mysteriously defoliated this week. Just like that. Wierd. It was 110 here today and will be the same all weekend. You want to grow my Bobbie heart seed next year, right? :winkwink:

Oh man! I HOPE it wasn't as bad as it looks, because it looks horrible! The blueberries look great though. Good luck with the surgery tomorrow. Let us know if we can help with anything, being nearly neighbors and all. :)

Beautiful blueberries, you will get to enjoy them in the future. For now, take care of yourself, it hurts just to look at the photo, I am sure glad that you are not in pain.

I think you need to put a scope on your nail gun and not just on the rifles.

Thanks all. Have to have two herniated disks removed in my neck and the spine fused. Worst part will be the darn hard neck brace I will have to wear for 8 weeks and not lifting anything over 3 lbs.

Coffee Mom, very funny:) The neighbor said could have been worse. You could have attached yourself to the trellis..that would have been embarrassing.

Will do but the garden is pretty much on auto pilot though someone will have to pick the watermelons for me lol.

I have had a bad run with tools lately. Heck 6 stitches just a couple months back from the table saw.

Well...I have 61 BB bushes but 20 of those were just planted bareroot last fall so they were not allowed to produce any so 41 plants. It is only a bit over two pounds per plant average but most of my plants are fairly young at 2-3 years in the ground. The bulk of the production came from the 7-8 year old plants and there are 16 or 17 of them.

bamboo rabbit - Great looking BBs! I also have a few gallons of berries frozen in vacuum sealed bags. I'm thinking next year we will make wine too. So glad that you put the BB pic first. The second one was a surprise. Good thing that you are seeing a doctor tomorrow so you can get an antibiotic and probably a tetanus shot if you are due.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and hopefully a break from those dangerous power tools. lol.

Thanks for the well wishes Christine. Surgery went fine but it is going to be a long 8 weeks wearing this collar.

I feel fine, even doing some yard work but can't lift over 3 lbs so that limits things. You should see those Everglades tomatoes, there are 100's of those tasty lil tomatoes ripening all over the yard.

I know how it feels to be restricted in what you can lift! I had a herniated disk in my lower back a few years ago but didn't have to have surgery, just lots of taking it easy and going to a good chiropractor. I still have to watch what I lift and my back is quick to let me know when I'm over doing it. Hope your recovery will be quick and as painless as possible! And take it easy with the power tools! My skin crawled when I saw that second picture!

Like Truscifi said just let me know if you need some help as I don't live that far from you!

At least those tiny little toms won't put you over your 3 lb limit, lol!

I've got my first little globes reddening up now on the plants you gave me on the one I planted in partial shade! The ones I planted in full sun is moving a little slower, but they are both putting out new growth so I'm hopeful.

That is good news Audra. I picked about a gallon of the little things this morning, going to try making sundried from them, but they are awful small but I am BORED and it is something to do.

WOW that's a lot of blueberries. Sorry about your incident with the nail gun. Things can go screwy with power tools. My dh is usually very careful but one morning was using his table saw and something slipped and he cut off half his thumb and also shattered the bone further down on his thumb. Luckily the Dr we went to was able to save it. I did something similar with a big peice of glass that slipped out of my hand and cut off half my pinky finger and it had to be sewn back on it was hanging by a peice of skin lol. I still have some nerve damage but not enough to matter :)

BR - Hmm, sounds like a great time to catch up on summer reading and do any planning needed for fall projects. I can sympathize, I don't do well on restrictions like that either.
