New ones planted last night

Got six types from Glicks greenhouse in Oley yesterday and today - boy do they look awful. I understand they are hardy plants but ugh....I am sure I should have dug the hole deeper but was putting them in a rock bed with landscape fabric underneath and only allowed about 8 inches wide by 6-8 inches deep. Lots of water for them but so far - i know only one day - but so far ugh.....

Take a look at the AHS website it will give you lots of information on how to correctly plant daylilies. You may have to scroll down to find the information you need.

I am confused here. Is there landscape fabric underneath the newly planted daylilies?

You know you can trim roots some if you can not get the planting hole that deep or you can just spread the roots much more horizontally. Also cut back the folliage.

Make sure the crown is only an inch or so undergrown, too deep means no blooms.

If you want a display similar to this year's you probably need to get some fresh bulbs. Not because there's anything wrong with the 'old' ones. It's just that they tend to produce daughter bulbs and those won't be big enough to flower and give the mass of red you might be hoping for. You might want to consider leaving the bulbs in the ground - unless you know they'll face gourmand rodents . They seem to bulk up better when undisturbed.

You can pinch mums a couple of times, I think until the end of June as they don't form buds until the days start to shorten. The only thing I'll be planting in the garden is a California Tree Poppy (Romneya coulteri) I finally found one. We had one in the garden when I was knee high to a grasshopper and I used to look forward to the big white crepe papery flowers that look like poach eggs, nice scent too :). It likes poor soil and full sun, I have the poor soil but the sun is a little iffy, no early morning or late afternoon where I want to plant this guy, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. Ahhhh colchicums, I'd better go out and replant those colchicums that I dug last week and left sitting on top of the dirt. Annette

It look very good, indeed and could be left as is, but my 'always could be better' mind telling me that, -curve from the 'flowers portion' of the bed to peninsula should be softened and be similar to what you have in 'Annabele portion' to peninsula connection. It will still make your SM standing at the tip of the peninsula, but will make the whole bed more uniform and tied together, - the 'flower portion' shouldn't go at the angle straight from the steps, but rather should go out perpendicular to them and then make a soft 90 degree turn exactly as it is done on an opposite side. re: trunk is not idealy vertical. If all previous suggestions was only IMO and simply reflected my own taste and preferences, in this case I don't think you have another choice as to replant it correctly AND stake it for at least 1 full year (preferably for two winters). Your site is sloping down and some soil erosion will happen no matter what in a next one-two years. You don't want to deal with a leaning back [and much larger] tree in such conditions.

I dunno this is why i posted, i need to be set straight : D what ever it is, ill be happy to share some if it, i do enjoy it, neat, tidy, and beautifully marked, but i really want some big sans varieties! Mason congo, fisheri, stuckyi, i really dont know what others get monsterous in time, but that what im shootin for next. Im not sure but i fear its too late this year to do any mailing to the north tho, there always next spring tho. hopefully by then we all have some lovely new sans to swap around. Ive been poking around and all the links i find to cultural practices with golden hahnii lead me back here...

Do you have them mulched heavily. Once they adjust you can pull some of the mulch off.

nope no mulch - the rocks are on top of the fabric which is over the ground not the hole----we shall check them out tomorrow and see.....now to get a few more types and away we go.....

If they were dug in the heat of the summer and the foliage wasn't trimmed back, then they will probably adjust to the transplant shock more quickly if you trim off some of the foliage. Be careful not to overwater them at this time of year. Water them thoroughly and then DON'T WATER them for at least three days in between. More people just starting out kill daylilies by over-watering them, causing them to rot. ( especially by planting in the summer heat.) I just never plant at this time of year, as it is asking for trouble. Maybe it is safer in the more northern areas.
