Computer Woes

Arrrggggh. I purely HATE it when I have computer problems! Just wanted to let you guys know (those who might notice) that my monitor is giving me fits, and I'm still not sure whether it is actually the monitor or a bad connection somewhere. But it will only stay on for a short period of time before it "loses the signal," so I'm spending most of today under my desk. (No, I'm not sulking there, I'm trying to determine if everything is hooked up properly, and if anything has been gnawed by sharp little puppy teeth.)

Several of you good folks write to me privately on a fairly regular basis, and I just want to let you all know that if I disappear for awhile, it is computer related. I'm not ignoring you, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

I've tried a few tricks this morning, and we will see how long they work. Wish me luck! Without my computer, I'm bereft!

poor thing, I feel with you. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to buy a new computer every year and not have to worry with the age problems of those things....

I had written to you but never heard back from you, but I take it that is not computer related but puppy related with having no time to yak back ;-)

hope you can get the problem solved quickly

With a lap top and a wireless router you can sit on the couch or out in the garden an play, plus you do not have to have the separate components. If you have a friend that has one try theirs a bit to get a feel for it. Some are quite reasonable now compared to what they used to cost. The link below has the best prices I have found. Bummed that I will be in a larger neck brace for at least eight more weeks. Happy to see that nearly everything in the garden seems to be thriving despite last summer being dug up, unplanted for a month, and then replanted in a new location with less than spectacular soil. The rain had been gentle until this afternoon. I love a steady gentle rain. But at dinner time things got more serious with heavy downpours, thunder, lightning. Our company was not deterred by it though and we visited the new greenspace in our town and also went to Lee Valley's store where they purchased indoor plant watering devices for when they are away traveling. We also went to a great little shop where you can buy saffron for $1.35 and I bought maple syrup buckets (for cut flowers)for $2.50 each. Heard from David B the other day...for those who remember him. Just sold his "new" house. He seems to be doing well through lots of changes and spoke of plants and things which still interest him. Computer problems are right up there with car problems. YUK! Hope you get things back to normal soon. And, yes, we do need an update on that sweetie Maks! I'm sure he is not the cause of your woes. He's an angel, right?

My computer seems to be hanging in there right now (fingers crossed, knock wood). I fiddled with all the connections and changed out the power strip. I'm HOPING that fixed things! We'll see.

Evelyn, I answered your emails. I don't know why you wouldn't have received replies, but I HAVE been having "mailer-daemon" issues with a couple of groups. Perhaps my replies are lost in cyberspace!?! When computers work, they are soooo wonderful, and when they don't, they are soooooo NOT!!

I'll try to take some new pictures of Maks for ya today. He got a new collar yesterday and is learning to walk on a leash. I normally go with harnesses, but the one that fit him scared him into a gibbering, quivering, howling mess. It wasn't that he wasn't used to it. He truly thought something bad had hold of him. So I will work with a collar for a few more weeks and try again when he is a bit older. We aren't doing real walks yet, anyway. Just trying to get him used to the concept of ME being in control of where he goes. (He doesn't like that much!)

Potter is still being so good with him. Very tolerant!

Lola very worry. I look in the water and there was little Tucker swimming. Jeremy had to pull him out.He was green.LOL!
We got to have a christening for the babies Marcia and then a family reunion.

Oh, Felix! Our babies are growing up so fast!! Maks has been asleep all day today. The heat has worn him out, I think. But he will make up for it tonight when he goes on an extended romp, playing tug-o-war with Potter and biting everything in sight. He steals socks and runs around the house with his "prize!" And he is developing a ferocious little bark! Reminds me of the Lion King...practicing up on his ROAR! This guy is going to rule the roost around here. No doubt about it!

I would suggest taking the time to make sure you have all of your documents and data backed up.

You could have something like the video card acting up, in which case backing up your info doesn't matter, but is still a good thing. - OR - You could have something more serious like the mobo going bad. If it's the mobo, many times it's easier to re-install the os than it is to get the computer to recognize the new board. If you re-install the os, all of your data will be history.

Better safe than sorry.

I know you are right, Minibim, and I hope I can find time to do that. Been meaning to anyway, since I have so many photos I would hate to lose. I have to say that the power strip seemed defective and when I put in a new one, the problem stopped. So far. It's been about 7 hours now with no problems, and yesterday, the longest I could go was 15 minutes. The power strip light was blinking on and off yesterday, too. The new one is not. So I'm really hoping for the best, and planning to do some backups very soon.

Marcia don't risk losing your photos! Start backing them up now! (I'm way behind in doing this too but telling YOU to do it should shame ME into doing it too.)

CDs and DVDs are good for permanent back-up, but they are time consuming.

If you want quick and easy for relatively permanent back-up, pick up an external hard drive. They can be had for about $75 and up depending on how big you buy. A couple of mouse clicks and your whole document folder is backed up in just a few minutes.

Or, if you have a dual layer DVD, you can fit about 8gigs on one disc. That's most likely more than enough to fit your document folder on. Set it up to copy and go play in the garden for awhile.

Your computer can decide to croak this afternoon and where would you be if you had to replace the os or the hard drive?
