advice on a broken jasmine?

I've got a maid of orleans with a branch that seems to have broken at its juncture with the main stem. it's still got flowers on it and doesn't seem terribly distressed, but I have a feeling I'm going to have to do something about it. I'm not just going to chop it off and throw it away, though...

might it root in water? I've rooted plenty of plants in water that aren't supposed to take well and I'm thinking of trying it. rooting hormone on cuttings never works for me :\

Jasmines are usually grown from cuttings, but I don't think plain water will give you a good chance of success, so why not go for the rooting hormone or better yet, rooting gel, which seems to work better and is easier to use.

Finally, don't worry about the mother plant, sambacs usually respond to pruning with a flush of new growth, so she'll bounce back; but if the leaves on the broken branch aren't withering, then it can still be saved if you splint it so it doesn't break all the way.

the branch seemed fine for a while, but now it's starting to wilt. it was attached by a thin woody strand, so I detached it and popped it in water for now to see if I could at least perk it up. I'm almost certainly going to lose the buds on it though :\

So what rooting procedure would you recommend? I've only got powdered rooting hormone.

It sounds like your Jasmine plant was tagged correctly, the 'Revolutum' is the cultivar (windeaux' statement above, "identical (to) the species, but with larger leaves & more fragrant flowers") is a description of that cultivar. This information was on the Theatrum Botanicum website: "Grows to 20' and is almost tree- or large bush-like in form. Has loose clusters of fragrant 1" yellow flowers sporadically throughout the year. One of the hardiest jasmines; should do fine in most of coastal California. I've seen a tree-like specimen over 12' tall in the Berkeley Botanical Gardens. Tropical Asia." With that in mind, windeuax' statement that his/her plant 'struggled pathetically' as an indoor plant makes perfect sense, as it's considered 'one of the hardiest jasmines'....so it sounds as though it needs a cooler place, (sort of identical to the zones in which it's hardy) during part of the year. Do you have a cool or unheated room or an unheated porch where you could place it during the winter? I have several plants that I grow on my unheated sunporch during the winter months....some are deciduous and some are evergreen.....that I *know* would never tolerate growing in my home during the winter because of their hardiness....if that makes any sense, LOL!? Sort of like trying to grow a Hosta indoors (without the benefit of a cool/cold greenhouse) during the winter...it seems to *need* that 'cold spell' to thrive. So, even though it's considered a 'tropical' plant....if its basic need of that 'cold spell' isn't being met, the plant won't thrive indoors. For example, a plant that *needs* high light to grow indoors isn't getting high light, therefore, it won't thrive, right?

Dear Friends, The tree in this thread grew from a cutting I brought back from Maui about 8 years ago. I've kept it alive and reasonably well even in this relatively-cold clime, though it has been plagued, each winter, by spider mites. Due to the climate and the mites, it has only bloomed once, long ago. Then last year the branch was broken that gave rise to this thread and the things I've learned here have helped me make my plumeria a much happier plant. The result is that it is blooming! In addition, I have two cuttings, both of which are putting out new leaf spikes (though I've seen no roots yet and am following directions until I do). So I wanted to share them with you, who have done so much to help make it happen. Thanks again for your time and energy and knowledge and encouragement! quiet new to growing palms, in autumn this year i brought 2 7foot queen palms from a well known nursery, which i planted into a raised garden bed. I was told it was fine to do so at that time of the yr. But i now think that was a big mistake. I live in vic australia and im in a small gully that gets very windy. Over winter and as of late we have had some bad winds. which has broken the fronds on both palms. One has 1 frond left that is only about 1/4 of frond left and the other has 2 fronds both broken about halfway up. My question is are they goners? will they grow new fronds? Also the fronds arnt a clean break they look splintered and very spikey split looking. Should i cut them to a point or a straight edge or leave them? is there anything that i should or shouldnt be doing while there in this horrible state? any advice is much appreciated

I would not remove any leaves from the clipped rosettes. Remember that the leaves are stored energy (water and food) for the plant. The same goes for the stem left behind. You can always trim that last rosette off later, hopefully after you get some back-budding and more rosettes. I like a longer stem, an inch or so, to stabilize the cutting, but that is just my preference. Sometimes that is not available. Let the cutting dry for several hours or over night. Then insert the stem into DRY potting mix, or lay the rosette atop the mix. Your plant takes up water through the roots. If there are no roots, no water is given. Otherwise you may get rot. Here is a rosette that I just rooted. (just rained, so that's why it is wet) It's ready for me to plant in the yard. See how it is sitting on the mix? And here is the plant I took it from. It has sprouted a pup that I will root eventually. I will probably use those leaves for propagation, too. But I am in no hurry so I will see what happens with this plant. (The stem is black because I put cinnamon on it after cutting.) Leaves will sprout just about anywhere. I'm not kidding. This one fell off a plant and landed between pots. I found it when I was trying to clean up some. LOL Often, my leaves sprout roots while laying on the counter. That's because I get busy and forget about them. Other times I lay them on my potting mix. Sometimes I tuck the end into the substrate, other times I do not. Some leaves simply do not grow, so don't fret if some of them don't. Some people mist them, but that has lead to rot for me. I only mist if there are roots. Again, no roots, no water. =) After I carefully arranged leaves in this pot, the wind mixed it all up! Leaves were buried and I probably didn't dig up all of them. A lot of the mix blew out, too. But they are doing their thing! I hope this helps some. Gardening should be fun, so don't let it stress you out. Some plants are easy for me, and others I cannot grow for the life of me. Trial and error - with good advice from friends here - has helped me choose. Good luck! You have a very nice looking plant.

I tried to use this rooting gel, but didn't work at all. Not sure what kind it was though.

I have heard of people taking willow bark, soaking it in water and then using the water to root plants, but never tried this before.

psh, I've tried that, too. with a little honey in it to disinfect. I've had my best success with plain water, to be honest :\

I recently rooted a bunch of Grand Duke of Tuscony jasmines in soil. No rooting hormones. I just stripped the bottom leaves and any buds, put them in moist soil, stuck the pot in a baggie and sealed it. I left it in a shady area and they all had roots in about a month. I don't know what zone you are in but if it's cold I'd just do it inside on a seed mat.

Karyn1's technique sounds right; if you use rooting hormone, just remember that too much is worse than none at all, so dip it once and tap the shoot to knock off the excess, then pot it and cross yer fingers!

I haven't used the rooting gel either, but it seems like a good "stick it in and forget it" method -- anyone had experience with it?

I've used the rooting gel and it was ok but I like the powder with an added fungicide better. The gel sticks well but it doesn't keep well in the container. At least it doesn't look right after a short amount of time. Maybe it was the brand that I was using but it was originally a light green color with little white spots and after a month or two it turned to a weird olive green color with some brown so I tossed it. I also couldn't find any of the gels that contained a fungicide.
