Hmmmm...I've never seen a pink Louis Phillipe, myself, however, the blooms are often dark petaled on the outer edge and pink in the middle. Maybe the next blooms will look more like that. And the blooms are darker at certain times of the year, lighter at other times. The warmer the weather, the lighter the blooms on almost all my OGR's.

Or...maybe you have something else. Should you be worried? Naaaah...it could be a fun mystery! You might have something you like even better.

Well it is the first pink out of a bunch of red blooms. I am pretty sure it is Louis Philippe. I got it the day we went to Seminole Springs.

Oh, so it's just one weird bloom, huh? That's odd! But I do know that bloom color is variable at different times on some of mine. When my Mme. Franziska Krueger first started blooming, the flowers were all a solid ivory color, which I didn't much care for. Now they are the variegated pink & ivory that they are supposed to be. I don't really know why it happened. I'm guessing you just have one strange flower on your LP and with any luck, it will go back to the true colors that it should be.

Let us know if it doesn't though. That would be something strange, wouldn't it? If it just suddenly started blooming in a different color.

I would love to see. I have a rose that we discussed on a previous thread that I was told it was a L.P. but all the roses are pink. I'm not sure what her name is but I still love her even if I don't know her name. After all,a rose by any other name...

I am confused because the rose I was told was LP is a soft pink so now I am wondering what I have.

I have a pink one like yours, Goldenpond. I think it's "Nacodoches".
My Louis Phillipe is quite red.
I'm by no means a rose expert though.

Melissa, that is definitely not Louis Phillipe. It looks more like Pink Pet or Carnation, with the shape of the petals. Tracy has both of those, and they may have given you a mislabled rose. Here is a good picture of Louis Phillipe in the "normal" coloration that is the most typical, though it can have a bit of seasonal/temperature variation:

Here is a photo of Pink Pet, which is quite similar to yours, especially in flower form. But Carnation would be a good guess, too, judging by those pointy petals.

Tree, I believe you might be thinking of Natchitoches Noisette, which is a pink rose, but the shape of the petals is very different from GP's pink rose. Natchitoches (pronounced Knock-a-teesh) has rounded, ruffled petals. I'm definitely NOT an expert, but I grow NN, and the petal shape is one of the things I most love about it.

And Mr. FELIX!! When I said your rose looked like Louis Phillipe, it was not blooming! Therefore, if I'm the friend whose name you have forgotten, (and I'll get ya for that!), you can't really blame me for getting it wrong. It's pretty hard to tell by foliage alone, ya know! *tsk!!*

Marcia ~ My first thought on seeing GP's pink roses was Pink Pet also. Your Louis Phillipe looks like mine do. Both of those roses, Pink Pet and LP, are the very first roses I got at a local flea market probably 30 years ago. I didn't know what either one was called until a few years ago from gardening forums. I am hooked on old garden roses.

I've never seen Carnation or Natchitoches.

My very first old garden rose was a Louis Philippi and I still have one of it's "offspring" in my garden today. It is definitely a red, but as Marcia says, can vary with the weather. Goldenpond's pink rose makes me think Pink Pet also.

pink pet. i've had mislabeled roses from SSHRF... it's such a great resource, tho, that i don't bear them a grudge.

Well that answers the question of what goldenpond's rose is but I have not posted a picture of mine yet. I will a bit later if my hands are not shaking too badly. I am about to take my 15 year old out for some practice driving.

Here are the pictures. I survived the drive! Actually, it was fine. She did really well.

This is the very first pink bloom on this rose. Of course I don't have a picture of any of the red ones and there are no others on the plant right now.

Nova ~ I love both of those, thanks so much for posting pictures of them. I also would like to know if either of those has a scent, I'm really partial to the heavier scented roses.

I'm working on getting cuttings rooted of my roses so hopefully will have some to trade in the future. Already have some that look like they might be going to make it. I've got more to do though, I have roughly 30 different roses. You know how it is though, you always want more. :-)

Hi, Melissa. Two things I'm thinking...one, that the bloom shape and petals look very much like LP, even though it is pink. And two, if you have definitely had "regular" looking Louis Phillipe blooms on this plant before the pink one opened up...could it be a sport? Is it possible, do you think, that you may actually have a PINK LP sport that could be propagated from cuttings of that particular stem?

I'm pretty ignorant about propagation in general. Well, I know all about PEOPLE, you understand, being a MOM and all, but plants are another matter. However, I seem to remember reading that a sport can be just one stem on a regular plant that does something odd, and that it can be the beginning of a whole new variety of that species.

I've never heard of a pink Louis Phillipe, and since no one else has said THEY have, I'm guessing there isn't one. Until now??? Possibly????

It's a thought! Wouldn't that be fun!!!

BTW, goldenpond, after seeing Nova's photo of Carnation (which I don't have), I remember now that the petal shape is very different from Pink Pet. I'm even more convinced your pink rose is Pink Pet, and somehow it was mislabeled as Louis Phillipe. Which means, you still have the extreme pleasure of acquiring an LP ahead of you...it is the BEST all around OGR for Florida, I think. A real must-have for any OGR grower. And it gets much, much taller and bigger than Pink Pet, btw, which tends to arch out into a lower, more spreading plant for me.

Hope you'll try a real LP soon. You'll love it. And though some people claim it has no fragrance, to me, it is the best in the garden. Heavenly! I think there are a couple of LP look-alikes out there that possibly don't smell as strongly...perhaps Cramoisi Superior, maybe? Anyway, LP is a fantastic rose!

As I said, Marcia, I ain't no rose expert! The one I have does have the rounder petals and no fragrance. It's such a generous bloomer though! So Natchitoches Noisette it is.
The only other rose in my yard is Louis.
Both are no maintenance other than trimming once in a while and a little fertilizing.
I admire you all who grow those beautiful fragrant roses.

My friend Audrey rooted a sport from her LP a couple years ago. It's now a healthy bush with two toned red with pink, larger roses. It occupies a place of honor in her front yard.

All I know about propagation is that when my husband and I started keeping our underwear in the same dresser drawer, poof!, we had two kids. Once I figured that out and banished his drawers to another drawer, everything was OK.

As for the LP, I guess I will wait and see what else we get with the next blooms. I thought, when I originally posted the question, that you all would tell me that it was a soil quality issue or too much or too little of some chemical in the soil changing the color. Now we will just wait and see what nature brings.

Hiya, Tree. I "ain't no rose expert," either, but I'm somewhat familiar with the ones I grow. That's the only reason I recognized Pink Pet. I have it and Natchitoches Noisette very close to each other, so I frequently see the blooms in contrast to each other, and it helped me to remember that NN has such rounded, ruffly petals, compared to Pink Pet's pointier, spikier looking ones. Otherwise, I wouldn't even have guessed at which was which. And you don't NEED to be no steenkin' ROSE expert, Mr. Tomato King! With all your veggie and tropical plant expertise, roses just clutter up your mind!

Melissa, I would tie a ribbon around the cane that has the pink bloom, so you can tell later if it continues to bloom differently from the rest of your plant. If so, then you might want to make some cuttings from it. That would be cool!! Treefrog's friend did it, so why not? And who knows what you might have!

The Louis Phillipe survived as a graveyard rose tree in New Orleans cemeteries. I have one in Florida. It does well and always blooms pink. We used the blooms to weave a crown for the annual "May Crowning" ceremony in Catholic boarding school.
