I can't believe this happened to me!! I went out this morning to find I've been burglarized! Yep, 2 dls stolen. They got Amythyst Veil & 2F of a 4F clump of Carved In Stone.

CIS, notice the other dls around it. This is also where they pushed the fence down to get in, I am standing on the city sidewalk.

AV, notice all the dls around this area? I believe these were targeted. CIS is in top left of the picture, just in front of the conifer. They must have walked down to this one because there is no other damage to the fence.

Carved In Stone has been blooming sporadically for the last month.

I don't think they were actually going for AV though because it never bloomed. What did bloom over there recently is Lycean which is the one right behind it.

And the only other one that bloomed right there was Pacific Coast, to the right, but it's been done blooming for a few weeks now. I just noticed I have another scape coming up :)

The only other dl that bloomed right next to the sidewalk is Magic Attraction. Either they didn't like it or didn't see it bloom, as I only had 2 at this point.

It doesn't seem like random stealing otherwise they would have taken the dls next to them too. I will be spending my day moving ALL of them to the 'real' fenced in backyard that gets locked up at night.

I am feeling pretty lucky that is all they took. AV wasn't that expensive thank goodness, but I have some expensive dls in that area. My unfenced front yard is about 50' deep before the chain link fence & have more expensive dls there. I'll be moving about 50 dls unexpectedly today.

Oh, my gosh. Terrible, I'm so sorry this happened to you, I'd be spitting mad.

I'm trying to figure out what does not make sense here though. Either beyond stupid theives besides just plan evil lowlifes or is that actually what happened to them? Could an animal have done this?

Fence is short, would not have to be knocked/damaged to just step over. Even in the dark, if they could find the daylilies they were after you'd think they could see to clear the fence.

Second, why take only 2 of the 4 CIS? A thief with somewhat of a moral sense to leave you part? And why not just fill in hole and smooth mulch a bit, may have taken you several days to even notice--why call attention to it as in red flag?

Strange. A total shame no matter what, but strange.

I used to be able to write well, too, before Internet forums entered my life. Formal, proper writing sounds stuffy and very unlike me. I wind up inserting loads of dashes and parenthesis, semi-colons and commas, and my sentences ramble in the same way my mind does. (Better than an incomplete sentence, indeed. lol!) Spelling- ugh! My Dad (who was a very good speller) used to say that since I read a fair amount, spelling should come easily, as if I looked at each letter as I read. I don't think so. I suppose he had the same sort of ability to visualize the words after as you do, Karen. I have a knack for visualizing other things, but not written words. I could easily picture my living room painted green, with the front wall pushed out 10 feet and the ceiling vaulted. (It's not that I'm hankering for a green living room; I just wouldn't have any trouble visualizing it.) I never have to bring samples home to see whether they match what I've got. I can remember and visualize the colors. It's not so with words. For me, learning to spell requires a lot of boring repetition. Is crepehanger an unusual word? It's one my parents used (not a lot, but when appropriate) from the time I was little. The rest were new to me. I can only hope my family will offer me encomium on my burgoo someday. The word sciolism offers some delightful possibilities. It seems one would exhibit it merely by using it. That could leave others wondering whether the speaker/writer was indeed being sciolistic or merely offering up some mildly self-depreciating humor. I've said it before-- my pet misusage peeve is snuck. There's a perfectly good regular past tense- sneaked. Why make things more difficult? I suppose it's useful for writers of dirty limericks, but it grates on me. (My dirty limericks are much less obvious! They use words like "sciolism".) Using "impacted" as a verb bothers me too. I think it brings up negative associations with wisdom tooth surgeries. The word "affected" works just fine, so why "impacted"? (I have been guilty of using "access" as a verb on occasion, but only in computer terms.) Some of the conglomerate words for "big" sound downright goofy. Humongous was bad enough; ginormous is just dumb. How about irregardless and disorientated? (ooo, fragment alert!) Anticlimatic is funny! I love that! I get a kick out of it when people describe themselves as nauseous, too. Words are fun!

Suebot - don't think i'm going to tell you anything that somebody else hasn't said, but since i've had too much experience with deer & rabbits, i figured i'd concur with the remedies that worked for me. i used to live/learned to garden on nantucket and martha's vineyard, where the deer are at least as unreasonably tame and probably more abundant than they are in ct. i've heard stories of people standing 10 ft away from them yelling at them while they chomp on their hydrangea flower buds. one woman i was talking to claimed she saw the deer attacking her dalmation!! anyway, my first thought about your original message was are you sure all damage is due to deer and not rabbits? - when they stand on their hind legs, they can eat quite high - on a couple of my client's properties on the islands, i had more problems with bunnies than deer, especially with my daylilies & echinacea. so, i also found success with the deer away spray products; i can't remember which one i used, but i believe it had garlic & mint in it and i actually liked the way it smelled. the directions said to spray every couple of weeks (??), but i found that i had to spray every couple of days or so & definitely after a rain. it was pretty time consuming. unfortunately, my other success was fencing in the gardens. i just tried to be decorative about it - i used nice cedar posts with caps, bird netting @ 4' high (you can't really see it, so the garden still looks nice), i hung rope along the top of the netting (for a nautical look...). I did throw netting on top of the gardens in the spring until things grew too tall, but i have to admit, the deer hopped in a couple of times (- that would've been a mess i kind of would have liked to see). i now live in maine and have a large cutting garden in my back yard, a good distance from my house and i use the bird netting as the fencing (simply because it was the only fencing i could find that would be high enough in one piece) and it works (doesn't handle snow load, though). i see deer in the back and they walk right around the garden. chipmunks are now my problem. unfortunately, my true feeling is that if the deer want to get to something, they will. sorry to be so lengthy, good luck. just out of curiosity, do you have phlox and is it being eaten - that always gets destroyed the worst for me. -mara

I live surrounded by pine trees and although they're beautiful and stately they are a massive nuisance. Some examples. Pine cones drop on the roof and make a huge crash that startles you. Pine needles and pinecones strewn all around constantly needing to be raked up. Pine cones pine needles and branches have to be cleaned off the roof annually . During the Spring around March excessive amount of yellow pine pollen covers everything outside the deck lawn furniture cars and is really pervasive. It spoils going outside. Also they cause a lot of allergies although if you look it up online the experts state pine pollen doesn't cause a lot of allergies but I think that's nonsense. As a few other people have mentioned it doesn't make good firewood so essentially I would highly suggest not having pine trees in your immediate surroundings of the home or your yard.

Please be very careful with anything you put on a cat, that is sold over the counter. It could make the cat very sick, or it could even die. Do not over dose it with flea meds that it may not even need.l A vet would prescribe something that works, and then use nothing else but what the vet prescribes. Quite honestly, if he is scratching his ears, it is most likely nothing to do with fleas. Cats get ear mites, and the treatment is easy. Again, with a vet prescribed medication. And no ear mites are not going to bite you, nor, will you ever see any. And even if you saw a flea, doesnt mean it was from the cat. You can encounter a flea walking down the street, across your yard, or someone elses yard. Someone you work with may have fleas, and they stick to clothing and can transfer to another, or just from standing next to someone in a line for food, or at the bank, or most anywhere. And to answer your question, yes, you are freaking out.

THAT IS TOTALLY AWFUL!!!

Please make a police report of vandalsim. Because even if they don't take the dollar amount of the theft seriously it is still vandalising your yard. If your theif sees police taking a report maybe it will discourage further activity in your area. Also you may not be the only one hit. If others in the area have similar problems maybe patrols will be stepped up.

I hope whoever did this feels sick everytime they see them bloom!!!!

From what I've heard this isn't all that uncommon. When I was working at the nursery, in the winter months I was responsible for the store. I laughed when I found a product that was coyote urine & one of it's uses was to deter plant theft. I ain't laughing anymore.

My dl friend here got the phone call at 6:30 this morning with this lovely news & it is something he has been paranoid about. He lives in the city too & has taken his most expensive dls over to his moms. Although, he still has a ton of $ in his yard. The same thing happened to him @7 yrs ago at his old house, so he has reason to be paranoid and now I do too.

I've got people stealing from my garden all the time...

I caught someone picking flowers off my trumpet vine last week. She lied and she claimed that she picked stems that were "hanging over her property" - but the property is an apartment building, she's a renter, and I witnessed her picking, and it was nowhere near the apartment building, it was near the sidewalk. I saw her bend over twice, she had two stems.

I asked her what she was doing, and she became pretty arrogant. She said that the first 3 feet of my yard belonged to the city, to which I replied: "does that mean you can help yourself to everything people have in the first 3 feet of their yards?" - then she said the "earth belongs to everyone."

A car drove by, someone she knew, so she said she was only picking my flowers to make a gift to her friend driving by the car. No, dear reader, you're not crazy, it makes no sense at all. I replied, "you steal flowers from other people's yards to make gifts to your friends? What kind of gift is that?"

She defiantly offered me money "how much do you want?" - I said it's not the money. She then turned around and walked over to her friend's car, who had stopped further down in front of my yard. She strutted a full 3 feet on my grass rather than walk in the street. She was clearly trying to provoke me, but I didn't say a word. I know a nut when I see one.

She stole flowers, I'm the "victim" and I'm the one that's in the wrong? That one was not going to apologize.

Sorry to hear you experienced this. The only advice I can give is try motion detector lighting in your garden. My cousin has it but not for people stealing flowers. They get bears in their backyard.

lala- That is pretty brazen and pretty mean and low. I don't know how someone could get any enjoyment out of a plant they stole from someones yard. I mean each time it blooms it reminds the person that they are a thief.

Someone cut all the blooms off of my big hydrangea one year. Probably turned around and sold them at the flower market.

That's about as low as it gets - my condolences.
At Christmas here some thieves stole people's lawn decorations - and even part of a church's manger scene!!

I'm so sorry...guess that move can't come too soon, huh.

What a sad statement about the public. I remember when my aunt used to live in the city (in the family home...my grandparents lived there) and people were so brazen about stealing. She had a hanging basket stolen off her porch (a Mother's Day gift) in the daylight...before noon! I'm sure she doesn't miss that.

I wonder if those security monitoring companies include the yard (as well as the house). Had one come by the other day, but I have two big dogs...so, I don't worry very much.

I am very sorry this happened to you and it doesn't sound like someone randomly picked some, it sounds like they knew what they wanted. It makes me sick to know that this happens all the time to gardeners. And it is probably another person who considers themselves a gardener who is stealing them:( NOOOOT! They are just a plain old thief.

I would definitely be asking around the neighborhood to see if anyone else has had problems with theft and report this to the police department. You should not have to move everything.

As a matter of fact, I would probably be setting some kind of trap. We have motion detector lights that come on and it has scared some trick-or-treaters before. Maybe you could set up one of the motion detectors that squirts water, except put a dye in it that doesn't wash off. I'm sorry, getting carried away.

My blood pressure is going sky high just thinking about this. I am usually pretty calm, but don't mess with my kids or my flowers!

uroboros5, it is sad when people think they are "entitled" to something just because it's there. Where is their CONSCIENCE?

It happens went to a garden expo last year bought 6 iris 4 daylilys 2 clamites late when I got home put them on car port, next morning all 4 daylilys gone,Andddddd I live out in the country on family farm.My neighbors are my kids and grand kids IT HAPPENS.

Lala - I'm so sad to read about this. Stealing plants like that is awful. I had some thefts about 10 years ago when I first started growing daylilies. Luckily it hasn't happened in recent years. I don't label my plants because I don't want the thieves to be able to identify the expensive ones. I have had some people steal my seed pods though.

Oh, this just makes me sick to my stomach. I am not surprised, but it still makes me so mad. This is exactly why I have no expensive or collector plants in my front yard. If they go through my locked gates, then it is breaking and entering, tresspassing ect... and my big Shepherd will bite them in the butt.

Here our cute little vandals are active at Christmas, and rip down and break peoples Christmas lights. Nice. The other bad thing: people steal our mail at night. Right out of the box if you don't bring it in. THAT'S a federal offence, but dosn't stop them.

I'm so sorry that you have to move your plants, but if it keeps them in YOUR yard, for you to enjoy, I guess that is what it has come to. :o(

How awful! I thought gardeners were pretty honest people and if they aren't gardeners I wouldn't think they would want someone's daylilies.
I did have someone cut all the blooms on my tulips one year and then they cut the Siberian iris blooms a month later, but I've never had whole plants taken.
What the heck is the world coming to? And now you have all this extra work to do. It's just not fair.

Am so sorry this has happened to you.Guess there are thiefs in every nook in the country,that injoys stealing from other people.I had 2 potted roses stolen from my back yard a few years ago..I do hope they are injoying them.

It's terrible. I am so sorry. Presumably, these thieves have been eyeing those that they intend to steal. It's so low.

It's sad that happens in so many places. One Christmas season in Springfield, somebody sawed off a 7-foot spruce planted in someone's yard, perhaps, hoping to make or sell a Christmas Tree.

What galls me, is that so many times, I've given divisions of all kinds of perennials to people that ring my doorbell.

Sometimes I say: "it's too small now, try again next year!" - I usually say "yes" and make a friend.

We had several clumps at our club bed stolen, which I discovered when we were out at the garden center for our show at the end of June. We put in a garden bench and arbor there too and secured them to heavy chains underground so they wouldn't get stolen. Whoever stole our clumps didn't even bother to take the AAA markers, so we know what they took and can replace them. They didn't take the most expensive plants, so we figure it was some idiot who saw these clumps blooming, liked them and decided to come back and take them maybe at night. Ugh! It has happened to a lot of people, sadly. But you have to tell yourself these aren't REALLY daylily people. Those who steal are just idiot losers masquerading as daylily people.

Every daylily in the landscaping of the local mall was stolen about a month ago. The police suspect landscapers.

Unfortunately, I can top your story. I help to take care of my church's Memorial Garden. Three years ago, we had a lovely
variegated grass plant stolen from our garden. Just dug out and swiped. Hopefully there is a special place in h***
reserved for people who steal from churches.
