What variety of pine would make a good living Christmas tree here
Comments (5)Greenwitch! You are too psychic!! I think the douglas has the Christmas scent, but I bought the white fir for it's beauty. And I snuck in some Pinus monophylia for the edibles. I'm not telling hubby. I'm going to plant them way low on the hill by the other pines...We do have irrigation all over the property. I have seeds (Ebay) and they are stratifying in the fridge right now. Our property is huge, and a couple Douglas fir wouldn't hurt. Sometimes I hate Ebay! I get tempted! Last night I ordered two Pistaccio trees. They love this climate, so they can dwell by the Macadamias! A packet of Douglas Fir shouldn't cost too much..... Comments (9)"Why not Taxus? Is it poisonous?" Very definitely, yes. Fatal in even fairly small amounts. See e.g. here: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/poison/Taxussp.htm Some junipers (e.g. J. sabina), but not all, are also poisonous. "Doesn't sound palatable. Please follow up with a report of the experience once you've done it." The Pinus mugo needle tea I had was nice. I don't know the exact recipe though (it was made by the cook at a remote mountain chalet in Bulgaria, couldn't hope for a more authentic situation!). Comments (2)Didn't eat any... they were just falling down a public place. It was right outside my cabin. The fruit were very similar to lychees, and never having seen a lychee tree, just assumed it was a lychee tree....See MoreWhat to plant under pine trees & clay
Comments (3)Best if you make the beds raised up put lots of compost in and Gypsum to break up that clay preparation is the key to everything. How about the succulent type ground covers not sure if they grow in acidic soil though. You can sweeten up acidic soils by adding lime don't know what it will do to your pine trees. Azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias, like soil that is acidic but not clay soil. Mesembranthemum they come in so many colours also white, pinks So do the Kalanchoe and flower for many months. What about Chamaescilla mine are in the shade and flower for ages, they multiply fast. My Verbena Coral Pink ground cover loves the shade. Get yourself a packet of Nasturtium seeds they come up year after year.. All the ground covers I have grown from cuttings. Hope this helps a little.. Mary-Anne...See Moreolivesmom
