Somewhat garden related-Inconsiderate Lawn Care Companies

Trying to remain patient but this is VERY irritating.

Has anyone else here gone out to your alley dumpster (that was completely empty minutes before) only to find it completely full of lawn/frond debris?

Happened to me again this morning. Trash truck came, emptied our large plastic dumpster with a flap lid, I spent some time in the backyard garden, heard a truck in the alley...and then checked the dumpster. Overflowing with garden debris! I called the city and they told me that if it happens again (I know it will) to ask the person at the wheel what their name is or get their tag number. Yea, right. No locks are available for residential pick up, etc...

Has anyone experienced a similiar problem? Any suggestions? Everyone on our block has privacy fences so our dumpster is quite convenient.

Sue, do you share one big dumpster between 4 houses? That's what we do here. One house across the alley that shares our dumpster runs some kind of produce supply business and they often fill up the dumpster within hours after the garbage truck has come by.

The thing that really irks me though is this. The shared dumpster is on my property in the alley. When the dumpster is full somebody at times has stacked their garden debris next to the dumpster on my property. The garbage men won't take anything unless it is inside the dumpster, so I then have to try to figure out who put it there and go knocking on doors to explain that they need to keep it on their own property until there is room in the dumpster. Arrrgh!

Thanks for the note back babalu. Yes, we share w/3 other houses and I'm sure many others are irritated when this happens to them. We all pay our monthly fee for garbage collection so it's very aggravating when someone violates our privledge.
I spoke with a neighbor and I think what I'm going to do is print out a notice of some sort-maybe something like..."Please choose another dumpster elsewhere to dump your load. We have 4 large families that are paying to use this one that's assigned for us". And then with mailing tape, stick it on top of the flap of the dumpster.
I wish I could offer a suggestion to those that pile up other misc. items outside of the dumpster like you're dealing with. Maybe a note printed on the computer that's vague enough that the other neighbors won't assume it's you.

PS. Always be sure to shred anything that has your name and address on it. I've seen neighbor's papers flying around in the wind after the trash guy leaves. Better safe than sorry.

I personally am a "garden center" worker with a huge name store. I can relate to everyone on every level as I also buy my products from this store. Please understand, that we are all under alot of pressure to get our "stuff" done for the day. As an experienced horticulturist, I find alot of trouble telling the "higher ups" what needs to be done and what "should" be done. I am a single mom with four kids, and need the pay, however, I really try hard to help my customers out with such stuff. I have gone as far as giving customers bug spray for trees that are being sold with "apple tree rust", giving out free replacement plants when our crappy ones fail, etc. Our cashiers only go by what they are told, please dont snap on them. As for the weather,....... we are out in the may snowstorms, freezing until 9pm when our shift is over, trying to preserve the plants, we are out in the pouring rain, like today, soaking wet feet and freezing, we are loading your cars/trucks with dirt/plants/bricks/ and whatever else your fancy entails. I have had customers swear at me.....demand that I help them when I am helping someone else, worked through severe weather and even worked through a `black out`` I would like to ask everyone to please take a little more consideration for your `local garden center worker`` Please , give us a little bit more consideration. April/May is the prime time for lawn care in this area and with the late start we are getting with spring, certainly not too late for moss control. Keep in mind that the development of moss generally indicates the situation is not ideal for turf grasses - either it is too shady, the soil too compacted, drainage is poor or the soil too acidic. Typically, it is a combination of several of these factors. For best results you need to address the causes, not the symptom. I get very leery when folks mention hiring companies like Tru Green (they used to be known as Chem Lawn), as they generally represent the antithesis of what sound gardening practices are all about. Companies like this are in business for the $$ and typically recommend excessive, expensive, unnecessary and often environmentally irresponsible treatments. However, the times they are a changing and even Tru Lawn now offers a "natural nutrient" program. IMO, that is the ONLY type of treatment you should consider. FWIW, PNW lawns are generally blends of cool season grasses that naturally go dormant in summer. It is counterproductive to fertilize during this period as it takes increasing amounts of water to maintain them. An organic fertilizer, applied in early May and again in late September (this is the most recommended time) will be of most benefit and not require excessive watering during our driest months. When you do water, do so infrequently but deeply, once every 7-10 days is more than adequate, applying at least an inch at a time. And mow often and high - a taller lawn will shield the roots from the sun, conserve what moisture there is in the soil and shade out competing weeds. Just an FYI, but lawn care - fertilizers, pesticides and moss treatments - accounts for the largest contribution (even more so than industrial issues) to the pollution of our groundwater, streams and other waterways. And gas powered mowers and trimmers produce more emissions than running your car for an hour. Just something to think about. Synthetics are things like Scott's or Vigoro (although both companies also make organic fertilizers). They're usually white or white with bright green bits, and generally get applied in the 3 to 6 pound per thousand square feet range. These fertilizers are (usually) salt based (although urea can also be used, which isn't a salt). Urea itself is a crossover. It's an organic molecule, but in use the amounts that go down and the general strength is more in the synthetic range. Blood meal would also fall into this range. Neither urea nor blood meal enhance the soil as classical organics would. Organics are Milorganite, grains, feather meal, and so on. Colors vary, and the amounts applied generally range from 10 to 20 pounds per thousand square feet. Which one to use is always an interesting argument. Properly applied, there's nothing wrong with a synthetic, but it's wise to keep a closer eye on your soil chemistry when feeding synthetically. They'll tend to deplete your soil a little more than organics will, leading to a see-saw effect. Organics are a lot more wide open, although soil testing is also a good idea. Although I gave optimal dates for correct feeding, there's really no wrong time to apply organics (except maybe on frozen ground). If you want to feed now, organic is your only option--it's too early for synthetics and they'd be an additional stress on the lawn. Overseeding is done when daytime temperatures are just dropping off their summer highs, to about three weeks later. For you, that's in a week or so, all the way through very early September.

That looks like a tri-mix lawn (KBG, fescue, rye), which is pretty standard. The KBG will happily spread into the holes if well-fed, fescue and rye don't spread. Fortunately, Michigan looks to be spared from the tender rains of Joaquin, so you can feed whenever you like. In your case, winterization may be soon, so I might wait for that--it's when the grass is green but no longer growing. If it's going to be before November first, hold off. If not, feed now. Winterization feeding will strengthen the roots, encourage the lawn to store energy for winter, and improve winter survival, spring green-up, and spring growth. Then next year, plan on feeding it with any good fertilizer at bag rate on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and possibly October 1 if you think that winterization won't be until November 1 or later. Then winterize when the time is right. Proper feeding will encourage the KBG to grow and close the holes. If you have a lot of holes, overseeding might be an option next year--but after a year of good care, those should be seriously reduced.

I feel your pain! The shared dumpster is on my property too & the city won't move it because of the telephone pole and wires. Besides the frequent & inconsiderate filling up, I've picked up numerous pieces of trash because the lid won't close. The city has also broken my wooden board on board fence twice putting the thing back down.

Bueno advice coffeemom. Thought about a video camera (my son has a fake one) but it may get ripped off.
I'm going with the sign idea. I'll play around with the fonts in Word and then I'll tape it to the dumpster.
