Best Surprise of the Year, So Far

The best "surprise" plant for me so far this year has been my Shrimp Plant Fruit Cocktail. I thought it: 1) would not come back from the winter freezes and 2) required shade.

Here it is when I purchased it:

Well, not only did it not come back from the freeze, it was one of the first plants to leaf out! It came back bigger and stronger than last year. So much for me thinking it would be a weak tropical. Last year, I planted it under my Green Ash tree, which is deciduous. The Green Ash has not started to leaf out until just this week. Well, here is this shrimp plant in full, scorching sun. We reached a record high temperature yesterday in Jacksonville of 93 degrees F. (Prior record was 90.) It hasn't batted an eye.

I have started a bunch of cuttings and am now a HUGE fan of this plant. Will not be long before it starts blooming. They buds are starting to set.
