Great pictures, Kara! Aren't pileated woodpeckers just magnificent? There's something rather primeval about them. We have a pair in our neighborhood, though they are at my friend's house more often than at mine. They seem to have staked out her oaks as their prime real estate.

Doesn't it just make your day when you have critters like this guy to share your garden with?

I never saw a pileated woodpecker until I moved to Florida. When I saw one I said - Now I know where the idea for wood-the-woodpecker came from. They are soooo cool.

We have them here in the farms. You hear them but don`t see them .... they move to the other side of the tree when approched.

They are one of my favorite birds. We had a pair and a juvenile at our townhome. They used to make son Dan crazy as they would be in the Sweet Bay magnolia right outside his bedroom window at 7 sharp every weekend morning!! They loved the berries on the Sweet Bay

I love these birds! Usually they are much more shy and move to the opposite side of the tree when I try to get a close-up picture of them but this guy had no problem with me being near him. Either there are some really good bugs in those stumps or else he's just gotten used to seeing me around!

Its a beauty. I only saw one once on our property when our power was out after the hurricanes.

We also have Pileated Woodpeckers near our home. Seems like they like to use the big power poles on the easement for their mating routine. Does make a racket. Love it.
