Bottlebrush tree is dropping it's flowers!

I have two mature bottlebrush trees on my property. They've just started flowering (this is exciting, as I moved here last fall and never saw one in bloom!). I noticed there are just as many flowers on the ground as on the tree. I was picking them up, and noticed the stems looked like they had been chewed. Sure enough, I watched for a while and it's SQUIRRELS! They are chewing off the flowers and dropping them! I doubt if I can stop them (my dog ignores them), but does anyone know why they are doing this? They don't seem to be eating anything. Are they that vindictive?
