Anyone else have night singing mockingbirds?

I've never noticed this before, but in the last couple of weeks, the mockingbirds have been singing through the night. I read that this occurs more often during full moons, and that it's usually "bachelors" that sing at night. Actually, it's quite pleasant, but quite loud. There are a number of them that are singing. Now all I have to do is convince my terriers that they don't have to bark at it.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is it more noticeable this year?

I don't know if it's more this year or not, but my guys are singing a lot right now, at almost 3 a.m. (don't ask why I"m up at this hour). And we've noticed them singing very early in the morning, before dawn. I'm pretty sure ours have already sorted out which boy gets which girl _ I think we have a nest, which is very cool for our tiny little yard.

But there's no question, they're singing through the night here. Maybe it's the moon.

We had one that would sing all night long a couple of months ago, but now that you mention it I haven't noticed it in a few weeks. Maybe I've just gotten used to it.

It would sit in the orange tree and sing, and then you'd hear another one a couple blocks away answer. This would go on all night long. Maybe they finally met up!

I'll gladly try and help. I suggest you getting one of the newer Ball Blue Books that covers canning, freezing, and preserving. It might make some good wintertime reading as you 'plan' out all the goodies you plan to plant next season. So far today I have done a batch of salsa, 14 quarts of green beans, and now have another batch of salsa cooking and about 16 quarts of tomatoes cooking. Buckets are washed and jars are ready. I guess I could go pick more maters, but then I would have to 'deal' with them. I wanna get this stuff done, so I can later spray some round-up. I don't want to spray until I am all done handling any produce or utensils in any way...sigh. Guess I could also go and water something...or pick the grapes...sigh

Hi, Sheesh. I'm a dental hygienist and I can suggest a few things. It's common for teeth to have sensitivity that comes and goes, especially in children---but it's usually cold sensitivity. Stay away from any toothpastes that advertise extra-whitening or extra tartar control. (That eliminates almost all of them on the market.)They actually use abrasives in the toothpastes that will abrade microns of tooth structure away, causing sensitivity. This is particularly bad for those with root recession, as the root is so much softer than enamel and wears that much quicker. I love plain ol' Colgate Total. Sensodyne is a good, OTC paste for tooth sensitivity but even they have begun to put abrasives in their toothpaste in the last couple of years. If you can find the original Sensodyne that does not advertise whitening, you're good. Fluoride usage will take away sensitivity. A mouth rinse that used to be prescription that just went OTC is called Phos-Flur. It can be found in WalMart for around $15 and is great for cavity prevention. All of my orthodontic patients use it, and DH and I use it at home too. It's the best stuff on the market that's over-the-counter. Other reasons for your sensivity could be that you're grinding your teeth, your bite may be off and you're hitting your canines hard, or you do have decay. If you went to the dentist recently, did you get xrays? And if you did, I'm guessing you got the annual 4 called "bitewings," and those won't necessarily image your canines. My recommendation: if it's been going on for over 2 weeks, place a phone call to your dentist. :)

My absolute most favored book of all time. I have several copies...here and there. :) Scout and Jem have been my friends for years. LOL And how could you not love Atticus Finch? (Truman Capote wasn't Harper Lee's cousin, but a neighbor when she was young). I hate the rumors that he wrote the book instead of her, though.

"Well my son has become picky now..so it must be a boy thing." It totally could be a boy thing! I think for SS some of it is just getting used to eating a certain way w/BM and then having to switch over to our menu. After having been with BM for 10 of the last 14 days, he wasn't adjusted to our food yet. He's in camp this week and the lunch I packed for him was NOT a hit b/c he's used to BM or grandma's lunches. When he came home on Wed, his trash was all in his lunchbox, and some of the food was leftover---I was shocked to see the lunch. A ham sandwich, which is fine, and he had eaten most of it. Then a Hi-C drink, which isn't great since it's just pure sugar. A fruit roll-up wrapper. Half-eaten bag of king-sized M & Ms. And a pop-tart wrapper. ????? So the lunch I packed---and this is very typical what the kids eat at our house for lunch--I packed him a PB&J on whole wheat bread. Fresh blueberries. Small stack of low-fat Pringles. Apple & Eve 100% juice box. And two fig newtons. I just try to keep things balanced---I am totally fine w/the kids having "junk food" so long as it's in moderation. I don't mind them having a small serving of chips or cookies w/lunch, esp. when it's a packed lunch for camp, but I make sure that there is ALWAYS a fruit w/it, and that the treats I pack aren't *too* bad! Anyway, SS didn't eat a bite of the sandwich b/c he doesn't like wheat bread, he wanted white, which is what BM buys. But he DOES eat wheat over here all the time, we never buy white---I guess he had just grown accustomed to BM's food. He didn't eat the blueberries and didn't eat the fig newtons either. So I guess he had Pringles for lunch yesterday. oh well. He will re-adjust---haha, just in time to go back to BM's, and then we will start all over again when he gets back!

Males also sing to "mark" their territory. Perhaps they are feeling a bit threatened this time of year...maybe competing rivals? Not sure, but I do know it is very common for mockers to do this.

Also, have you guys noticed the FIRST song you hear nearly every day is that of the cardinal? And the LAST song you hear nearly every day is that of...the CARDINAL! I love that they sing us awake in the morning and to sleep again at night. Well, to sleep until the mockers wake us up again, anyway.

My Mocks sing at night. I usually notice them during mating/nesting season. Marcia my cardinals wake me up and put me to sleep. Especially WAKE me in the morning when the feeders are empty!! they pace the grape arbor until i come out and fill the feeder next to it. I just wish I could keep the cowbirds and grackles from scarfing and spilling all the food.

The mockingbirds are still singing away into the night but there are not quite as many of them. The one in the tree next to our house is exceptionally loud, but I love to hear them. Alas, we don't have many cardinals around here. I do remember them chirping away before dark. I am not a morning person. There could probably be 100 cardinals in the room with me at sunrise and I wouldn't hear them.

I read somewhere that only males who have not found a mate sing at night. On researching it I found this info.

Gee~(hey Kristi - did I do it again?)~ Was it something I said? I didn't mean to be a discussion stopper. I have always felt bad about this topic because I hand raised a mockingbird baby who sang all night, as an adult, since he imprinted on me. I didn't mean to be a know-it-all, hope I don't come across as such.

What's the secret to getting the Friday night drunks coming home at 3am to stop singing at night?...sheesh....must've been some party last. I'd rather have my mockingbird back.
