they're back....hear that hard thumping all over the place...spring has sprung....

Ahhh, so you have the little jack hammers too! I hear them call just as the sun comes up, then they crank up the machine guns and go all day! Aren't they beautiful??

Those are some of my favorite birds and since they are pretty bold I get to see them fairly close up! They seem to love all the sections of rotting pine tree trucks that are in the very back of my yard.

we don't get the pileated woodpeckers here but when i lived down south i saw them eating most often on the suet logs. most were homemade small diameter logs or thick branches cut maybe 1 foot to 2 foot long with holes drilled in them and stuffed with peanut butter suet mix and hung up out in the yard. maybe it seemed more natural to them?

What beautiful birds! I can never get over how large pileated woodpeckers are. In the summer, I chop peanuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, and walnuts for the birds, squirrels, chipmunk, and rabbits. They all love it, and when I put it on the deck I get a great view! And the cold... This year it's hitting pretty hard, compared to last year. Sadly I don't get pileated woodpeckers up here (or should I say down here, they live in the U.P. in Michigan). Your picture is great. :)

Nice photo! I haven't seen them here in Florida but we have some in our woods in PA. They are big birds!

I just love these guys hanging around my australian pines. I just wish they didn't attack the gutters first thing in the morning! It's enough to wake the dead. (and makes my cat leap off the bed)
