Well, it's just that one variety, right? Salvia divinorum? Diviner's Sage? Surely they can't ban ALL salvias? There are over 700 varieties! I won't HAVE it, I tell ya! My salvia coccinea, salvia farinacea, salvia greggii, and salvia leucantha BETTER be safe! Grrrrr......
don't be messin' with my salvia and my coleus, now!!

Wow, it's amazing how fast the threads move these days...my post was already down near the bottom so I rescued it just in time...LOL. THANK YOU for commenting and for your enthusiasm. After lugging an unending chain of garden hoses from garden to garden for 4 1/2 hours to water everything I really appreciate positive feedback! mantis....the last rose pictured (palest pink)is Austin's 'Belle Story'. And yes, that is Rosarium Uetersen in the cat patrol photo. It is immediately recognizable, isn't it? Great color that lights up a garden. Thanks again everyone....and YES, I am exhausted. Celeste

Hummers like feeders or flowers better?

I don't know which they like better, since I've never put up a feeder. But I do know that with flowers alone, you can attract regular visits from the hummingbirds! Each year, there are more flowers growing in the gardens than the last. Once the Bee Balm (Monarda didyma) goes into full bloom, the hummers will visit the flowers regularly until they are ready to leave in the fall. After the Bee Balm, the Lobelia cardinalis blooms, and then the Salvia splendens and coccinea, and the Cardinal climber. These are all hummingbird favorites. The flowers seem to be visited about every 15-20 mintues. Often I'll see 2 hummers, tussling and chasing each other around the flowers and yard. Last summer, there were 2 females fighting over the Lobelia cardinalis, and a male flew into the fracas, probably the mate of one of the females. Three hummingbirds were the most I've seen at one time. I have a very native and natural backyard, so their needs for habitat and insects are satisfied as well. It also helps that a couple of the neighbors have nice gardens too.

We're still harvesting lots of hot peppers and sweet peppers, quite a few bite-sized tomatoes, a few slowly-ripening regular tomatoes (I may pick 'em green this afternoon because we're expecting about 36-38 degrees here at our house tonight), a decent amount of green beans---would have had more if the sun would shine, a few okra pods her and there, and still have winter squash and cukes growing. Dorothy, I ended up getting enough fall cukes for about 18 to 20 or maybe 22 jars of pickles....mostly bread and butter slices, bread and butter stackers, dill stackers, but also some dill chips and some sweet relish. I think it we could have a couple more weeks of sunshine without a freezing night, I'd get enough cukes to make at least one good batch of dill spears, but think tonight's cold may thwart those plans. My entire fall garden has produced less than expected (back when I planted in sunny weather!) and more slowly than expected due to all the clouds and rain. However, the cool season crops look good and I have high hopes for them. The fall potatoes look good above ground, and I'm hoping that when I dig them, I'll find lots of taters underground too. I hope your broccoli, cabbage and chinese cabbage can take the light frost tonight so you get a chance to make kimchee. I may or may not go out this afternoon and cover up what I can to get it through tonight's cold. The forecast for Marietta doesn't sound so bad, but our well-experienced local forecaster took great pains to explain on the weather forecast Thursday night and yesterday as well that those of us in "rural outlying areas" were likely to go into the 30s and likely would have patchy frost in some areas. So, if I don't cover up and everything is damaged or killed, I can't blame him for the weather because he warned us. I'm not really ready for the warm-season gardening season to end, but it is inevitable at some point, and the cool-season crops ought to hang on a bit longer. I have several volunteer tomato plants sprouting in the pathways, undoubtedly from one of the cherry or currant types, because the birds get some of those maters....especially the currant ones. I'm tempted to dig up a couple of those 6" tall tomato plants and try to grow them on the patio in tubs, but I know from trying it before that tomatoes that ripen in cold weather just don't have the flavor I expect. They always say it isn't over until the fat lady sings....well, for the warm-season crops, the fat lady may sing tonight. Our temps here are running 10-14 degrees colder than average for this time of year, so I don't think we'll make it to our usual average first frost date in November. Could be cyclamen mites - I've had the same problem on a few different plants incl. an S. Divinorum, pretty bad, actually, and very similar to the pics posted. Well, curled leaves to me is the first sign of someone nesting underneath, so I looked. And saw nothing. Then looked again. And a tincy-wincy whitish thing appeared to move across. Well, out came the microscope, and yep, it's a cyclamen mite, positive ID on a few female species from different plants. Now, saying they're small means understating things by a few orders of magnitude: you need a 100x microscope to count legs, so you get the idea. At this magnification a pin tip looks like a sphere, and you still couldn't read what's tattooed on the mite's butt. Interestingly enough, they manifest themselves sort of differently on mango plants that have heavy, waxy leaves, but the idea is still the same - browning (like in case of a bad burn) and crookedness of the young leaves. At any rate, I've searched the web and those mites seem to be fairly common and - bad news - fairly hard to get rid of, the last resort measure being soaking them in 100-110F water for half an hour, something I am trying literally as we speak (just put plants in pots into a bathtub full of hot water). I'll see how it goes, but I've seen those mites dying in a drop of water under the microscope in about a minute, so it might work. I'm hoping I won't kill the plants. Makes me think - I've read on some funny sites that those symptoms are very common to S. Divinorum, but "it's a bit of a mystery" - nobody's certain, most authors contradict one another and the best advice I've seen was to try changing every variable one by one to see what works. Now, given that they are all derived from a small progenitor stock and the number of places you can get cuttings from is limited - could it be that they are all infested with mites? It's hardly surprising that mites haven't been notices in the past: as I said, it takes some looking. Thinking about the spread of infestation across my plants and its apparent chronology, I can only suggest that mites were brought on the cutting I planted, there are no other possible sources like other plants or soil. If you want to check your plants, get a really good magnifying glass and check the undersides of the leaves for tiny, 0.1mm or less, bugs. Some are moving fast. And BTW, it appears to be highly contagious, so as most sites suggest, step one is isolating the infested plants.

Actually, I was wondering if that's what causes some of the bees to get a bit agressive? I have no clue if I have that variety or not, but it does make you wonder.

Saintpfla, I'm coming back down to earth a moment here to reassure you...I have never seen this salvia for sale at any nursery or big box store. I really doubt you have it in your garden, unless you've been buyin' your plants from some guy growin' 'em in his basement under Gro-Lux lights. Go forth, enjoy your salvias, and be happy, don't worry!

As I understand... a lot of the salvias have the same properties, just not quite as much.

ALSO, MANY, MANY other plants have these properties. I googled some plants I read about last summer. I was interested because these were mentioned as food crops that will grow in the steam heat.

Some were traditionally used for these properties and for food. I found this information when I looked them up in the Tropical Plant Database.

Well, if they are going to ban every plant that has harmful properties, hallucinogenic or otherwise, we will all have empty yards pretty soon. Common sense needs to rule...but then, we ARE talking about government work, aren't we?

Sadly, no one is expected to be responsible for themselves any more. When does it stop, is right. Apparently, we have to be told what we can eat, what we can drink, and now what we can grow in our gardens. I'm thinking more and more of a cabin on a deserted mountainside. Then if I want to grow SAGE for my turkey stuffing, the Salvia Police won't show up and confiscate it.

As Phoebe used to say on Friends, "STOP the MADNESS!!!"

...but we all know it never ends.....

Why are we paying our elected people to waste so much time to write ordinances against what God put here on Earth?
Isn't there something else they could do? (rhetorical)
Aren't there a couple more important things these people should be doing about now?

I haven't had this much fun since I was lounging around outside Crazy' Greg's on Fort Lauderdale Beach in the 60's! I was definitely a whiter shade of pale in those days, always watching out for the Sun King, and livin' on Lum's hotdogs and pineapple wine! (Hey, it was cheap, and tasted better than Boone's Farm.) Aaaahhhh...love beads, hip huggers, rose-tinted granny glasses. Can you picture it? (HEY, I wasn't BORN a gray-haired chubby ol' lady!)

Tree, I'm with you. This whole legislation is silly, except for the websites that are promoting this particular salvia as a hallucinogenic and selling the powder for tea. I CAN see where they might want to stop that. But they need to stay the heck outta MY garden! I'm not sellin', smokin', chewin' or injectin' anything growing out there.

Of course, how can we blame the bored government workers and officials? It's not like they have a COUNTRY to run or anything!!
