Transplanting Fig Tree

HELP Not sure what type fig it is,had gotten it for my husband throught mailorder,had asked for a sweet tasty right off the tree eatting fig.Against my better judgement he planted it in the ground.We get very cold here in winter.It grew to my surprise beautiful,had started with a few small fruit but hadn't matured.Our area was calling for a freez for this morning so yesterday my husband decided to dig it up and put it in a very large pot in a sunroom we have.It looks very sick now,leaves droppy,and dry.Need some advice quick.Thanks

What's done is done. Keep it moist and be patient.

I think there is still time to get it back into the ground. After transplanting Tie all your branches close together sticking newspaper between them, this wii act like insulation,then rap the entire tree with old blankets and such, (dont use plastic)tie the tree real tight.and finish it with a plastic bucket on the top to keep out the snow and freezing rain.and forget about the tree till the middle of spring. Some people bury their tree, and cover with a mound of dirt,but i still like it my way.So get it out of the sun room.

I think it would be best to just leave it alone and let it recover. Don't overwater. It will probably be OK, but it needs stability, and this isn't the time of year to be making major changes to its environment. I'd keep it out of full sun for a week or so. Then gradually increase sun exposure as it appears to be doing OK.

Can I transplant a fig tree 2.5 feet deeper than what it is now?

Are you saying that you prefer to dig the hole 2.5 feet deeper than your original root system instead of pruning? That sounds like a very deep wide hole? How many people are gonna be involved in the digging? Why is it too tall? Are you trying to lower the branches for fruit picking?
