Daylilies by the numbers (photos!)

As I was taking my morning tour of my gardens this morning, I saw

One MAGIC AMETHYST

Two HOLLY DANCERS

Three AUTUMN JEWELS

Four ORANGE VOLS

Five SILOAM MERLE KENTS

Six MAUNA LOAS

7 Buttered Popcorns (counting old blooms from yesterday)

and 8 AUTUMN WOODS

If I could pick only one daylily to use for landscaping purposes, it would be AUTUMN WOOD. If I could pick two, the other would be MOONLIT MASQUERADE.

Alas, MM had only one bloom today, but here's how it looked at clump strength.

Ok Debra. I must admit I'm extremely jealous!!!! Those are some awesome lilies and the amount of blooms oh my goodness!! There are no words coming to mind, just an empty mouth right now :)~

And thanks so much for the photo of AUTUMN WOOD. It is a beauty! Mine will bloom for the first time in just a week or so....

Thanks for your comments! It's great to be able to share my photos with people who are interested in them! Ellie - I agree with you that Grace Stamile's daylilies were the bluest I've seen and I also like that Reilly seedling! Here's a link to my photos from Ladybug Daylilies. Dan Hansen's garden was even bigger than the Stamiles'. He also grows corn and huge zucchinis. He tries to avoid using insecticides - thats why a lot of photos have bugs in them. He said they are called lovebugs. (There were thousands of them while we were in Florida and they ended up coating our windshield whenever we drove on the highway.) He has five very friendly cats to help control pests around the garden. He also has a lot of older, cheaper daylilies for sale, many of them are Ra Hansen's (his mother). He also has big collections of daylilies from Curt Hanson, Ned Roberts and the Salters. He is working a lot with edge no eye daylilies. Rita, Primal Scream has really multiplied this year so I'm expecting a lot of blooms. I picked up some something to spray for thrips, I think it has helped. I've just sprayed the buds themselves though because I didn't want to kill any good critters. Still, I can see that newer buds are looking better, so blooms should improve. Maybe cicadas are doing some damage here, I hear them & see one occasionally, but not like I had expected from all the talk. Jason, I imagine My Melinda will do great for you. I have several clumps of it around the garden & need to divide again, it multiplies really fast. I really like Hillbilly Heart, it hasn't been blooming but 2 or 3 days, but each day it has had 4 or 5 blooms. I've always love the dark eyes on a dark red daylily like Velvet Eyes too, so striking I think. Oh Nancy I feel for you. The deer did a number on our beds until I put up the electric fence. As for PINK STRIPES. I have a few hundred crosses that will (cross your fingers) bloom for the 1st time next year. This includes maybe 30 plants of PINK STRIPES X DASH IT (Ellie's daylily). Can't wait. The submissions are rolling in. Thanks to all of you. If you still need to send in your submissions, please use the following: 1. Limit your submission to TWO pictures. 2. The submission should be as attachments in an email to this email address daylilyroundrobin@yahoo.com 3. Submissions should be high resolutin JPG images (size up to 2 megs) 3. Rename each submission as follows: State City Your Name Cultivar An example of renaming the image would be something like... I live in Albany Ohio so I would change the name from HP1293.jpg to OHAlbanyCharlesDorseyTwoPartHarmony.jpg If it is renamed in this order (State City Your Name Cultivar), it will be much easier for me to sort them. Your pictures are lovely and I especially liked MAUNA LOA, AUTUMN WOOD and MOONLIT MASQUERADE.

Tell us why you would choose Autumn Wood and Moonlit Masquerade above all overs. Are they strong growers with many blooms per scape with a long blooming period? I am thinking of ordering these two because I love the pictures of them. How does Mauna Loa do? There are so many oldiest but goodies that I don't have.

About Autumn Wood and Moonlit Masquerade... You nailed it with your own words: They are strong growers with many blooms per scape and a long blooming period. Plus, for me, they are excellent rebloomers. In a year with plenty of rain, I get three bloom cycles out of Moonlit Masquerade. Autumn Wood usually gives me a nice fall rebloom. On top of all that, I just think they're two of most beautiful daylilies in existence. If I were going to mass plant daylilies, they are the two I would enjoy seeing day after day.

Mauna Loa is my favorite orange. My photo doesn't really do justice to the flower. There's more red swirled in there than the pic shows. It puts on a good show, but it's not a rebloomer.

You're so far north, you probably won't have many that will rebloom. But I really get a kick out of having blooms in September and October. I've had blooms on both Moonlit Masquerade and Autumn Wood in November some years.

Thanks Debra, that is just what I wanted to hear about Autumn Wood and Moonlit Masquerade.

Long Island is hot and humid in the summertime and I am planting my daylilies were I can and will water them if we don't get enough rain so I think I can get rebloom out of ones that are rebloomers. I just didn't know Autumn Wood rebloomed but that only makes it better.

I have planted daylilies all over my yard this year plus done that big project in my front yard but I still have my 6x26 foot new backyard daylily bed that I just finished the other week all empty and ready to plant. I am getting overwhelmed with the idea of needing plants for the whole thing so really need to seriously make a list of must haves to start filling the space. I want to get them this year so they are established some by next year. I had both Autumn Wood and Moonlit Masquerade on my list from your photos on the dip thread. Really like the looks of these two.

Beautiful daylilies. Glad to hear the recommendations....I think our growing conditions are comparable so they should do pretty much the same for me. I have Mauna Loa and love it too.

Betsy - I was singing the Twelve Days of Christmas when I was putting together the photos. It's too bad I couldn't find some kind of bird to photograph in the neighbor's pear tree. LOL

Juliet - I think AUTUMN WOOD would perform very well where you live. Because it's a dormant, I understand it doesn't grow well in the deep south. I think it would be a star anywhere in Zone 7 and up.

Plus I love the cute ways you group your pictures such as your Dippety Doo Dah Post and this one, calling it daylilies by the numbers. I really especially enjoy clump shots.
