Invite for a brunch garden party

On April 9 we would like to invite you to come to our house, it will be a very informal and easy gathering where those of you who would like to trade plants can do so on the side of the house, or you can just introduce yourselves to other gw members and spend some time with us talking plants.:)

If you have been to my house, you know that is small but I can set up on the side for trading plants, inside the house will have brunch and any food related items will be good for that.

Because I have 3 dogs, I can not have children or other dogs just in case. One of my dogs Nikki, is very playful and will follow all to play ball.:)

On April 9, there is a garden festival Winter Garden bloom and grow, starts at 9am and ends at 5pm and is near by for those who like to attend and get more plants. Knox nursery and Biosphere have booths as other vendors. Also Knox nursery and Biosphere are close by if anybody want to go there after the brunch.

I will need to know who is coming and what they are bringing food related so we don't have doubles of the same and to those that are coming I will send directions to the house.

If anybody likes to help with coordination, that is a good idea, all your ideas are welcome and if you want to start a trade on the exchanges for plants please feel free to do so.

The reason that I thought about the garden party is because I see an interest on some of you so I really hope to see some faces that I already know and some new ones too.

Hi, I've been coming to this site occasionally, but I had to join when I saw this post, just so I could ask you if I can come to this too! I live in Winter Garden and I'd really love to meet some other people nearby who are into gardening and plant swapping.

Looks like fun, Silvia. I live nearby in Clermont and would love to come if my son doesn't have a soccer match that day.

Love to see the Winter Garden plant sale. I've never been. Went to Biosphere last Saturday and was disappointed that they didn't have a lot of plants. Jim Thomas was there and he is always good to talk to.

I'm confused Rob - crumpets steeping on top of the cup? As a teenager, a friend and I decided to hold a 'proper tea party' for a larger group of friends, in all the style our mothers would have known but no longer bothered with. i.e. Hats. A lady Always Wore a Hat to Tea. We borrowed lace tablecloths, my mother's finest china tea-set (inherited). 1. finger sandwiches 2. fruit loaf (buttered slices of this kind of loaf were a classic) 3. then you get the dainty cakes and stuff. It was a riot (my mum came and loved it). Linda's quite correct: 'high tea' was something for the workers, who had their main meal in the middle of the day, but needed something more substantial when they got home, so had tea and a hot dish, as well as the cake. (Also what you gave children who weren't old enough to have a formal dinner at 8.00pm) So, 'high tea' is technically definitely not posh . . . :)

I agree with ljpother - I think you'll always get a person asking off topic questions. I don't mind when people come to the WS forum with off-topic questions. I think it's a great chance to inform them about wintersowing and increase our numbers. I don't think anyone should ever respond to an off topic question in a mean way. We definitley won't get people to convert to WS'ing that way! :) As for the reasons one might ask an off topic question on this forum: I personally would prefer to ask an off topic question to those that I speak with often on GW. I myself have had some nasty experiences on other forums (where my question was absolutely on topic) and will never visit those forums again for that very reason. It seems that some people get so into their passion that they forget that others are still learning and will often "bite their head off" for not knowing something or asking it in the wrong way. I understand seedmama's approach in moving it to the convo side, but I still doubt that will work in the long term simply because you'll always have new people coming to the thread that don't have a full understanding of wintersowing or the true purpose of this forum. There are off topic posts here all the time anyway. It wasn't on topic when I posted the story about drilling a hole in my hand just because I was wintersowing at the time. That had nothing to do with my containers, seeds, etc. - it was just a tragic/funny story to share with my fellow wintersowers. I guess that should have been placed on the convo side too, but do we really want to regulate everything that way? My two cents....Diana

Karyn...hi, we certainly hope this one doesn't get blown away this time..mind you the last one wasn't expected to either! No, there is no access to the g'h from the garage as this would take up valuable plant space I thought...plus I'd rather look at plants than a door...haha. Lauri, thanks for the email, will have a go at that coffee recipe, yummy! The greenhouse bascically faces south-east, I guess. It gets sun all day except for the last bit in the evening as the sun then disappears to the right of the fir tree you can see in our neighbours garden. The temps inside it have been hovering around 75-80F on sunny days, but we have chilly nights at present and I have some bedding plant seeds sown so the fan heater is on during the night to keep it above 40F. Today, I left the door shut while I went to work, the sun was particularly strong for the time of year and it topped out at 104F!! We have had to ensure plenty of ventilation so have spaces all along the roof line left open both at the front edge and back, but at the moment they are filled with foam rubber else the heat from the fan heater just escapes. Shade cloth is also a necessity even in our climate in the UK!. The garage wall seems to be acting like a giant storage heater as you can feel it's warmth even when the sun has gone. Will keep you posted on it's progress. Regards, Gill.

It's standard in my husband's family. We had practically the same guest list for my first 2 daughters, but their birthdays are in Nov and Dec, so we used our Community center and limited the party to 3 hours. My son's birthday is in June and we held the party in our yard. And that was where we went wrong. Yeah- some guests lingered till the wee hours of the morning. Really, I can't believe DH survived, b/c I almost lynched him when the baby woke at 2am, and my 4 year old woke up crying at the same time and he was still partying it up in the yard with some friends. I sent my 4 year old to the window to call him crying-lol. It has been settled it will be our immediate family and local aunts and uncles and close friends (which is 2 families). DH finally listened to my voice of reason. Thanks for all your input. I will update and let you all know how it went Mid-May.

Hi Silvia,

This is so nice of you and Willie. Barring emergent issues in TX with the mother situation, I plan to be there! And, I would like to volunteer to help with some of the organizing provided there is a back-up plan in the event I have to harry off to TX.

Oh, and Tom? Put me down for a (long) sprinkler wand and plumeria cutting if you don't mind :)

I'll be bringing homemade healthy dog treats and something for the humans also!

I don't have any plants to bring, but would like to see what everyone else has and maybe snag some?!?!?! I can't wait to play with your doggies. Jerry would love to play with your dog.

Wallisadi, in the past we had the very nice Deland gardeners coming together to the house, maybe you and Christine can come together? would love to meet the man behind the gorgeous flowers.

Tom123, If you can come, we will be happy to have you over. The Winter Garden sale is 2 days Saturday and Sunday, we will probably go on Sunday, because we will have the party on Saturday from 10am till...?

Doug and Pam, very nice that you are coming, you can bring anything that you like either a savory dish if you like to cook or a drink if you don't, anything that goes well for the brunch. I say savory dish because in my experience when we had parties most people brought something sweet, there will be some sweets anyway.
If you want to trade plants is optional, I will have the side of my house set up for that.

Tom and Cathy, it will be so nice to see you again!!!

Kathy, I hope that you and Ralph can make it so we can talk and keep up to date on our projects, Ralph is always building something for you, it will be nice to see you both.

Anna, maybe one day we will be able to meet, maybe you can come or I can go there, looking forward to that day.

Bamboo, thank you, but they are not puppies, the big one is 13 and the other two are about 6 years old. My brothers could not believe that the older one looks young and Nikki the ball player was so dynamic for her age, she likes man so when my brothers were here she was very happy!

Julia, anything you can bring is fine, you can post in the exchange page or here. As we get closer to the date, we will want to know so we don't bring doubles

I was just thinking about you the other day, maybe some day you get to come to see the garden and we can meet.

None of my passies are survivors but I will plant them again maybe in containers so I can save them from the cold. I have few varieties and so little time, lol. I still have not planted the lillikoi from Hawaii, busy with all the tomatoes and my family that was visiting.-(

It will be great to meet you and Ronn and that German choco cake sounds delicious! And please Elizabeth don't have a high expectations of my garden, with the visitors here I kind of took a break, but you will get an idea about what works in my garden, hopefully something from the garden is mature enough to make a dish. I am afraid the giant salads that I made for my brothers and they enjoyed, might not be at their peak in one month.

For those of you that are making the trip from far we want you to know that we will be here all day, so don't worry about the time you get to the house. And also in the past some gardeners took the trip together in one car, so find out if anyone is coming from your area and you can maybe make arrangements with them.

This weekend we are going to Echo, I will check to see if they have something interesting to buy...

Silvia, if you're going to ECHO perhaps you should take them a few Black Jungle bean seed, that would assure the widest possible future propigation....

I will be looking for fruit trees that I will put in the greenhouse in winter maybe a mango , caimito, I will check the herbs too.

Dianne, I will check interesting things to grow but they have to be tasty, lol.
I have not tried the katuk plant yet but if it is like the moringa, I will pass. If they have cuttings available, I would not say no.
And my daughter Cheryl is filling in for me at the Leu Gardens, it will be her picks, I can see flowers! lol. She will be at the garden party helping with all the details.

I forgot to tell you that last Saturday we went to see Wicked and it was really good! sold out performance, so if you get the chance to see it, you will like it.

Before that we had dinner at Ceviche in downtown Orlando and had a very good dish with potatoes, I am going to try to learn how to make it and if it comes out good, I will do it for the party.

And happy St Patrick's Day! Willy celebrates and we are going to the Irish pub today, just one drink or two.

Echo is wonderful, you are going to love it! I just had to chime in and say that anyone who hasn't been should make a trip. Go when they can give you a tour and make the most of it. It is pretty amazing what they do.

Didn't see the follow up until now, and I'll bet your there right now :-) I didn't want anything, I really am scaling back except for still trying different varieties of tomatoes....Can't wait to hear about your experience at ECHO, it truly is a magical place and they are doing wonderful things.

Keiki, I just got back from Echo and I agree with you, it is a must place visit for us gardeners.

Tom, the black jungle butterbeans idea was great! I gave it to them with the story attached, hopefully they can preserve it for the future. I really liked the farm, the tour and the ideas that I got from them.

Here are some pictures that we took and also some Leu gardens purchases that Cheryl did when she went there today. All of us in the house were busy today, the planter with the flowers was one of my brothers gifts and finally it was put together last week and today planted.

Thank you. And I also think it will last a long time, is made of cedar and we stained it, it has good drainage. The recently acquired plants from the Leu Garden sale are liking the new place.

Silvia, thanx for the post, I was very ill most of last year and din't do much in the garden and I'm just now getting back to it. I think most of my seeds are out dated and I need to buy some more but I don't want to buy stuff that is not in season.
I'm just looking to plant any fruits and vegies,toms,cukes, squash,berries and so on. I just don't know what should plant now. I have a small area so last spring I built some 3x6 plater boxes which I hope to use this year. Any advice would so be appreciated.

Carmen, I am very sorry to hear that you were ill but it is good that you are feeling better. And the best road to recovery that I know of is eating well.
In my garden now I am transitioning from cool season crops like greens to warm season crops.
You can put seeds of beans, cucumbers, summer and winter squash. Transplants of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant.
Don't delay the planting because it is just going to get too warm and when this happens I plant sweet potato slips, butterbeans and yard long beans.

Silvia, I would love to come. My wife Dottie and I will be there if she isn't ill. This is why I have waited until this date hopeing things will work out.
