St. Augustine Floratam Mowing

I live in Jacksonville, FL and this will be my first year with lawn maintanence coming out of winter. The grass is still dormant from a very cold winter. I have heard that you are supposed to cut your grass at a height of 2" and bag the clippings the first time ,and only the first time, you mow in the spring. The purpose being to remove any dead plant material and to allow the sun to penetrate. I have also read that this should never be done for St Augustine because it can damage the grass. I'm really not sure what is right and what is wrong. I want to do what is best for my lawn. I greatly appreciate any help/opinions on the matter. Thanks.
