Did you have Frost? Any Frost Damage?

We hit a low of 36.7Ã¯Â¿Â½F this morning. So, so, so fortunately, no frost! I was really worried, as I have already put out all of the tender plants and really didn't have time to pull it all inside again. I am counting my blessings this morning.

Did you have frost? How does it look this morning? Did you lose anything? I know it is hard to tell the first day. If there is damage, the evidence will appear in the coming week. Hoping everyone's plants and seedlings survived. :(

It was 34 this morning and there was frost on my shops roof.......I hope it did not make it to the ground as I just put the plants in the garden this week.

Last night it went down to 39 in my yard in S. Sarasota county, not by the gulf. I hope that's the low for the rest of this month!

We had a freeze last night and it's still too cold for me to brave the cold and see. When the fountain thaws out, I will go out and see. Otherwise, they will just have to do what they do on their own. However, I can see that everything looks pretty. My Japanese maples have leafed out, a good thing. The bridal wreaths will perhaps remain for a day or so more because of the cold weather. Plumeria still look pretty. Some late-blooming azaleas look bright pink and others cheerful in orange while the roses are offering a soft pallet of color for the bright orange azaleas and quince flowers.

Misery loves company I guess. Same here in north central CT. My hydrangeas all have leaves turning black this afternoon so I'm guessing no flowers this year. This stinks!!! Everything was perking merrily along and wham! Most of my WS sprouts & seedlings look okay but things that were planted out appear to have taken a hit. Guess I'll cover the hydrangeas next May 11 & 12. According to the Almanac, those are the Ice Saints' or Frost Saints' days. It also says St. Pancras Day (May 12) never passes without a frost. So glad I'm reading that today instead of yesterday when I could have done something about it.

Frost damaged Goldfinger bananas - any hope?

I found your pic very interesting, as that's what my Ladyfinger bananas often look like anyway. (I don't cover the bunches and assume it's a combination of lack of water--we're in drought here--and too much sun in summer/light frost in winter.) I just cut the entire stem down when some of the bananas start to go yellow (usually not even as yellow as those in your pic) and place them in the shed to ripen. They still taste good. We're having very cold winter nights here now (it's fallen to zero degrees C over the past week) and I've noticed that of my three bananas growing in a row along the fence (Ladyfinger, Goldfinger, Blue Java), it's the Goldfinger that's suffering the most. Its leaves started to yellow as soon as the nights *began* to get cold, say about 10 degrees C. I don't know how this will affect the fruit as this is only its second winter and it flowered for the first time a couple of months ago, so the fruit is still small and green. But, as I said, it's the one that seems least cold hardy.

The damage depends on stage of leaf/bud developement. Length and depth of frost/freeze. An established plant 4/5 years old is less apt to have damage than one planted last year as the roots have additional energy and may send up new shoots to replace the damaged ones.

Sadly i had some frost damage. Some of my beans plants, 2 of 3 basil plants, and 1 tomato hit the dust! I guess thats what happens when you plant early!

Its weird...it was 44 degrees and yet I had some light frost on several of the roofs...and a little on the car as well. Thank goodness none that I saw on the lawn or plants/trees. All looks just fine this afternoon...Thank goodness!

I really hope this is it for the rest of the year till next winter of course...

We dropped to 32/33 here last night/early morning(Ocala National Forest area).My Tomatoe plants are nearly 3ft high set in 6ft high cages,so it was a real pain to try & cover them.I wrapped as many sheets as I could find(& am doing the same tonight)around the cages.I could see some cold damage this morining,but it seemed only the very top growth suffered-time will tell.My peppers & cukes/squash were all covered in sheets & seem fine.Newly sprouted beans seem OK also,but I think they will be stunted for a while.I took a chance planting/setting all these out so early,as my frost clear date is around March 20th or so,but if I get a few ripe tomatoes right about then,I'll be happy.I will have one or two small greenhouses up & running by this time next year,so will not need to gamble on getting my Spring plants in the ground so soon.

I also had 32/33 here with frost covering my yard & the farmers pastures around my farm was white with frost but the screen-greenhouse tempered the air where my plants are and I don't see any frost damage as yet. I had set one banana tree outside (still in the pot ready to plant) but it will be a day or two to see any results of frost on it if any.
