I'm sure I'm making the house sound nicer than it is, but I like it and I think that's the important part. Plenty of people would probably just demolish it and put in a new, larger home (like many on my street), but I like small old houses so I'll just try to return it to its cottage roots.

I've got some "before" pics--I'll download them once I get high-speed internet (this evening I hope!). Brace yourself, heh heh, they're not pretty and it was hard to get any pics of the house due to the overgrown weed trees (now gone).

I've been on gardenweb for a few years now, but just re-joined under a new username now that I'm back in Seattle. I had a cheat sheet on pic-posting that I used to post hundreds of pics in the AZ forum. That got lost in the move so I'll have to re-learn, but once I've got the high speed up and re-figure out pic posting (don't worry, I'll use the "test forum" to try to figure it out, lol) I'll send some of the "befores".

Thanks again for the great welcome. Nice to see such a great, friendly forum. Some can be a little bickery, lol.

My advice is to take even more pix of your "before" garden, from every conceivable angle! We have lovely "after" photos, but often they are taken from different angles than the "before" pix so it can be harder to compare the progress. I'm sure you will really enjoy having your own plot of land to work with. How wonderful to have a little view of the Sound! We will all look forward to cheering you on as you make this garden your own.

Welcome back to Washington! Which neighborhood in Seattle, if you don't mind me asking? I live about 45 minutes away from Seattle but travel into the area about once a month. Sometime this month we will be in by the Greenlake/Fremont areas where we are planning on making a day of it.

I know that many cute cottages from the North Seattle area are featured in Cottage Living at times. Can't wait to see yours.

Welcome, Grant, you'll find great people and inspiration here. I have been to Seattle twice on business and managed to do a little sight seeing outside work - it was love at first sight. Really beautiful area and I was smitten by all the lovely houses, water everywhere and the beaches full of driftwood (we have better beaches here, IMO, but no driftwood :-)). Looking forward to see the pics of your cottage and garden.

Wow. You are making me nostalgic. I moved from SEattle to Virginia three years ago, and while I love the east coast, being originally an east coaster, our seven years in Seattle were wonderful. Where in Seattle are you? Can't wait to see photos!

Thanks again for the great welcome. I took some "before" pics this weekend (well, not totally before since I had eight weed trees taken out), but they'll give you the idea.

For those who asked, the house is in the Faunlteroy neighborhood in West Seattle, an in-city neighborhood.

I planted a red-leaf redbud tree in front of the house this weekend, plus some red-stemmed hebes to help reflect that stem color (and to distract from the now hay-colored "lawn").

I'm really enjoying this forum--you're all the best.

Welcome to the Cottage, Grant! Love your area of the country, especially some of the quilt shops. You can keep the rain, though. lol!

Your cottage sounds like a fun project. Lots of work but the rewards of restoring it will be so wonderful. Btw, you may want to check out the Smaller Homes forum for some inspiration. A few of us from here hang out there, as well. It's for those of us in the under 2000 sq. ft. category. I'll link you to it. And as for your pics, you might want to open a PhotoBucket account. Posting pics from there is super simple - I know, I do it regularly. : )

Love those redbud trees, too. And red oaks. They would probably grow for you as well. I'll be looking forward to your pics!

You live ~ 1 1/2 hours south of me, although I used to live near Westwood Village. I have big gardening projects ahead of me, too, and have found this forum to be quite informative. Everyone has great stories and sense of humor, too.

Welcome to 'Cottage Gardens', Grant. Your home sounds wonderfully cottagey. I love that you're restoring to it's former quaintness. Can't wait to see it evolve.
