Pinus wallichiana in zone 4b-5a

Ok after reading most of your post. This seems impossible to grow a Pinus wallichiana in such cold climate. But i know someone who did it with success. I don't remember how old are his trees, but they are doing it "good" ? They go through the winter with no major problems. He is located in zone 4b but with the slope he is located it's more likely to be a microclimate which allows him 5a. I never ask him the origin of his seeds, i should ask him. He have grown them from seeds and they do not look like zebrina at all.

It's trees get major burns on the needle during the winter, they are all like rust colored, but they survived and continue to grow very well. That guys is growing unsual species to been grown in such cold climate. He told he have had been success with Pinus armandii and he cut it out to wider his house. When you are talking about the gansu origin, were do you find this origin i have been looking foward the internet trying to find some.

White pines hybridise very easily; the seeds will be hybrids, most likely with P. strobus as it is so common in your region.

In the province of Gansu (Kansu) in northwestern China. You would probably need to go there to collect your own seeds!

i have lost both P. w. Frosty and zebrina in my version of zone 5 .... i suspect hybrids as resin notes ....

also ... i think there is some struggling with translation .. but you say both of the following:

------->>>>major needles browning and/or loss is a MAJOR problem ... sooner or later it is going to weaken the tree .. and perhaps lead to death ... or maybe not... but browning is not minor ...

i have very young zone appropriate conifers that did it for a couple years.. then must have gotten enough roots down to be able to stand my winter ....

and on the p. wall's .... they did as you note with needle browning .... eventually not being able to recover.. and one died the second spring.. and the other the third ... its hard to remember back then .... as i was very inexperienced at that point in my conifer life.. but i know at least one started extending its buds... and then died within a couple days ... i had no clue what happened at the time.. but now i suspect a late very hard frost killed it ...

no problems not otherwise associated with any other zone appropriate conifer ... i dont recall ever losing one ... and being a blue freak i may have bought a few too many that look alike .. bottom line .. its a zone appropriate PINE!!! ... otherwise known as the weed of the great white north .... Ken...this might be of some interest to you. One thing...I am under the opinion this conifer does not like harsh zone 5 conditions of Michigan which I suspect caused extensive needle brown out. Where it had protection it stayed green...I assume from snow cover. You will loose all those toasted needles but not all is lost. With the extension of this years candles yours will be back this year. With a little luck yours might acclimate. Mine did after about 3 years and now does brown out over the winter months. Of course my zone is 5b/6. This conifer is suited for USDA hardiness zone 6. and up. So I contend I am border line for for compatibility...so far so good. Hello Resin, How are things in the UK? It did take a hit on April 12th when the temperature hit -9C. All new growth candles froze. It has regenerated some new growth especially the main leader. It doesn't seem to want to put on girth just grow straight up. I can't understand why it wants to maintain this fastigiate form. I think I have an odd ball conifer with an attitude. It looks normal in every other aspect. Considering where I have it planted I hope it maintains this growth habit. All other pines in my collection lost this years growth but didn't seem to incur any other damage. They say a 50 year event. I won't see the next one. Dave

Sorry to have posted and then forgot about it. Unless my memory is playing tricks on me again, I attended the Northern Plant Conference and Bill Hendricks, Klyn Nursery, mentioned that there was some guessing about where it landed exactly. I didn't write it down but I think he mentioned either Lawson or Nootka with Nootka being plausible since it is much more adapted to the interior states climates than the run of the mill Lawson. I wasn't considering burned needles as a major problem, but if you say so i will now consider it.

As major problem i was more thinking of massive burn on the trunc or the top die during the winter.

my point was that it can be a minor or a major problem ...

but it is a variable that must be considered... not just brushed aside ...
