Fruit Trees in my Orchard

I just took inventory of my in-ground orchard. I have more trees coming.

Not all trees listed will fruit here, but they are planted outdoors.

I will do some grafting on the trees that don't fruit.

My greenhouse trees are not listed (citrus, avocado, mango, papaya, lychee, etc.)

When should I expect my fruit basket to arrive? Ok serious question, have you gotten any apples yet? I want an apple tree but I want a tasty one. My apple palate runs toward the MacIntosh taste of sweet with a sour twang.

Lou - all I can say is WOW! What a variety. Here is a question for you: I live in zone 9 (St. Pete/Seminole/Pinellas). I'd like to grow a plum, apricot, or persimmon. Is there a variety that would do well here in this climate?

Uh oh, they weren't able to modify my order. The original trees have shipped. I also ordered two apple trees which bloom at different times... an Arkansas black apple and a yellow delicious. So I'll need something to pollinate both of them, as well as the bartlett pear and the alderman plum. I'm thinking of shopping locally since I can't add these new trees to my existing order and take advantage of the free shipping. I appreciate the advice, any further suggestions are greatly appreciated... and BTW, I need dwarf trees. I do have crabapples on my property and possibly an ornamental plum, will they help at all? I'm on 14 acres in the country so I have no idea what the neighbors have or what might be growing in the woods either.

My original post was probably half Rant and half call for suggestions for fruit trees that are well suited to the Suburban Yard. There is a local University Horticulture Professor (And peach researcher) here who has gone on record on the Radio that Homeowners shouldn't fool with stone fruit in our area.... One of his Key Messages is "Don't buy a peach tree at the grocery store!" But.. The grocery stores have a big pile of $14.99 Peaches and Apples sitting out front this spring... Destined to die a painful and horrible death in someone's back yard next year.. He has many *Excellent* points... related to the short attention spans, lack of knowledge and commitment of your "Average" Homeowners... They buy the tree without knowing anything about what to buy, stick it in a hole, then wait for the bounty to arrive... What they get is a sick tree and a big pile of wormy and rotten fruit.. Lets face it -- a Red Haven or an Elberta or an Indian Blood Cling grafted onto a Guardian rootstock would stack the deck in the home owner's favor here in SC... but good luck buying one at the Supermarket or local nursery... You would probably have to mail order it... Thanks John

Hoosier, my point is I found conflicting information. The problem is that pollination data is not very accurate as it is hard to test. Also many people don't understand that for cherries it is more than bloom timing that matters for pollination. At some point I found this guide that listed the different groups that cherries fall under but I can't seem to find it now. Well, here is one without a lot of data, see below. Oh, here is a link that says Stella may not work for Bing in some areas: link. Pollination compatibility for most fruits is fairly simple, but not for sweet cherries. For the original poster, I would say there is a good chance the Stella will work, or there is a wild or flowering cherry in the area that will do the job. But, it is not certain. Yes. New shoots that are beginning to grow right now will fruit next spring/summer. Blackberries have a perennial root, with a biennial cane. That is, it takes 2 seasons to make fruit. The new canes that are growing now are called primocanes. Think, 'primary', first stage. When they begin to flower out next spring, these primocanes will 'graduate' to the next stage, called a 'floricane'. 'Flori-' means 'flowering', of course. Raspberries also have primocanes and floricanes. Now, before anyone goes all technical... this is pertaining to 'traditional' blackberries, not the so-called 'primocane-bearing' hybrids known as 'Prime-Jim' and 'Prime-Jan', which produce fruit on both kinds of canes. Yes, they do exist... but I don't know of many people that are growing those types-- yet. Once this year's floricanes are done fruiting, you can/should trim them back, as you have done. The spent canes can be used to smoke meat, BTW. It gives a gentle fruity, nice wood smoke flavor to beef. Otherwise, if there is any chance that there might be a pathogen... burn them (which you are doing in the grill/smoker!) Enjoy your berries! :)

I haven't had any apple trees make fruit yet as It is still a young orchard. They flowered last year first time but I got fruit drop because it was their first year. I also like the McIntosh apple. The Macoun Apple parentage is a McIntosh and Jersey Black cross. Really yummy apple. I'm hoping it will fruit here. I might have to dig it up each winter and stick it in my freezer to get the proper chill hours ;o)

You have to look for 'LOW CHILL' varieties that match your actual area chill times, not zone number.
So the first requirement is to find the chill hours for your area.
Lots of what I can grow here will not fruit in your area.
Chill Hours are way more important than Zone for fruit trees. Zones are for hardiness not fruiting ability.
DO NOT THINK IN ZONE NUMBERS WHEN BUYING FRUIT TREES
Once you match up the chill hours then check zone hardiness.

A Fuyu or Jiro Japanese Persimmon is ok for your area. They are non astringent.
The American persimmon is astringent.(pucker power)

Lou - Your orchard is going to be looking good in the years to come, looking forward to find out which ones are the best tasting. I love good fruit!

Amber - When any of my apples start producing here, I will let you know about the taste, I have 3 heirloom planted in the front of my house, it is getting packed in the backyard!:)

Bill - Those persimmons that Lou recommended are good, I really prefer the non-astringent varieties. I have the fuyu planted, but it is going to take a long time to fruit. I found out that apricots don't do well here because the humidity so I won't even try it. I bought one variety that is a mix plum and apricot hoping it does well.
My cocktail plum is doing fine and gave fruits last summer, planted 2 years ago.
It is best and cheaper to get some fruit trees bare root.

The Fuyu persimmons you planted should start making fruit the second or third year after planting, granted you wont get many, but getting a few off your own tree is a great feeling. The trees do not have to be very big to make fruit.(4 to 5 feet high) With the first time fruiting you will get drops, this is normal as the tree adjusts to it's new home.

Like you I have a local 'you pick' place to go, around a mile away, and pick different fruit from his trees. I pick up an empty basket when I go in, wander around his trees and pick what I like. He weighs the full basket on the way out and pay by the pound. I ride my electric bicycle to go pick fruit and I get exercise from pedaling because he is close. If I'm tired I can use the electric motor to come home.

Slowly I'm putting in my own trees for an orchard here, I have plenty of room for it on ten acres. I can't wait until my trees start making different fruits. I'm trying different apricots to see if one variety will like Florida. If one type is good then I can graft it to the other apricot trees. The unfruitful trees are not wasted if you know how to graft when you do the yearly pruning. I also 'teased' a M111 root to make new roots & suckers I can separate for new apple trees to graft on to. I love to experiment.

Let me know how the apricots do for you. I previously had a Kati apricot in Phoenix and it was one of the finest fruits that I had sampled, very productive too. One of my top favorites for sure!

Is nice that you get your exercise in the bicycle, everyday I walk the trail and take my dogs too. The fresh morning air does well for me.:)

Keep us posted on the experiments with the fruit trees.
