Lipstick plant ?????

I just bought a very large vine that the Nursery said was a Lipstick plant...I went on Google to read abt. it and all the pics show a bright red 'lipstick'.... this new plant has dark purple almost black flowers...the right shape but a strange color? is there such a thing as a dark purple lipstick plant? or do I have a different plant mis-identified?? Thanks for any help on this, I don't have a camera or I'd post a pic.... sally

lots of different varieties, just bought a whorled leaf one this winter. deep purple flowers. have and orange one, totally different look. nice plant!!!

I think what you have is lipstick Mona Lisa. Out of the purple flower will come a red one. :o)

Jumping in.....its not that uncommon, especially if grown outdoors during the summer, where the hummingbirds do all the dirty work. But, they are very easy to pollinate with the aid of one's trusty fingernail. The pods are long and beanlike, hanging down. Some species can have pods over a foot long. They take several months and when ripe will dry and split open lengthwise. The seed then floats out. Unlike all other gesneriad seed, lipsticks will have seeds with tiny hairs attached, so that the mass of seeds looks like fluff. The actual seed is a dot in the middle of the hair. Some species have just one hair, some have two hairs, etc. They germinate like other gesneriad seed though. You just take a pinch of the fluff and press down gently on top of the surface of the very moist media and enclose. Your seedlings will look different from the parent in that as they grow their leaves will be a little different in shape and markings; but this is juvenile foliage. It is very rewarding to grow on the seed. You will learn so much, watching your seedlings grow and mature. To harvest the seed, you can wait until the pod dries and cracks, and then quickly gather the seeds. If you see the pod beginning to crack or dry you can remove it and place in an envelope to capture the seed when the pod dries. But, even if you miss the event and the pod splits and dries, there is usually some seed that remains for several weeks or more. One pod will contain a lot of seed--enough to grow on several hundred seedlings. Jon

It looks like the lipstick plant my mother gave me 7 years before she died swearing it flowered. Never did until 6 months after she passed. Beautiful red tube flowers. Sorry i sidetracked yss it looks like a lipstick plant.

Is this what you have? The black part can be there for weeks before the red lipstick comes out.

Black pagoda is also a possibility. I have one and the leaves are very dark green, almost black, and the calyx is also almost black.

Thanks folks, I'm still not sure exactly what I do have, the leaves are smooth shiny medium green, the flowers are much smaller than the Logee's pic and are deep purple, no red, they point upward, in small groups at the end of each vine.... no scent... apparently a variety of the 'lipstick'..;. I sure do wish these Nurseries would get more info. from their growers, a proper name would help... but I really like this vine it is gorgeous.. I thought at first it was a Hoya but the bloom form is different.... I appreciate the feedback, thanks again kind people...sally

I Googled some more and found my plant on a Nursery in So. Fla. web-site, not allowed to name it.... it is Aeschynanthus Radicans "Crispa"....it shows the dark-red purple flowers and also shows the brighter red coming out of the center...like coffeemom said... thanks again... apparently there are many different versions, like Walli pointed out... thanks again!.... one never does know all there is to know abt. the 'Plant World' it is never-ending, isn't it?? such a wonderful journey.... sally
