Good tip. I actually have a Hamlin. It's kinda small and hard to peel but is very tasty for juice and the determined out of hand eater.

"The Hamlin orange was once the most important juice orange in Florida, replacing the inferior Parson Brown variety as the principal early-season juice orange. Today it is the predominant early-season orange grown in Florida and Brazil.
The cultivar was discovered in 1879 near Glenwood, Florida, in a grove later owned by A.G. Hamlin. It is small, smooth, not highly colored, seedless and juicy, but the juice is pale. The fruit is of poor-to-medium quality but the tree is high-yielding and cold-tolerant. The fruit is harvested from October to December and this cultivar is now the leading early orange in Florida and possibly the world's principal variety of very early maturing common sweet orange.[5]
On pineland and hammock soil it is budded on sour orange which gives a high solids content. On sand, it does best on rough lemon rootstock.[3]"

Glenwood happens to be right behind my cow pastures! My Hamlin is not far from it's origins. What an excellent choice you made.

Thanks Gatormomx2....I can't take all the credit though. I'm just replacing my old tree- which was a Hamlin - with another Hamlin. I figured if it survived since the 1920s, it must be a pretty hardy tree!

It produced some nice, sweet oranges too! I sure miss it!

I have nothing against the bigger stores but let me tell you a story......when we moved here in 2004 we started clearing some of the land as it was basically a house surrounded by jungle. First order of business was citrus trees and I stopped at HD and Lowes as well as a large local garden center. All 3 had about the same price for the same trees. At the local garden center they had just that day received a shipment of citrus and I noticed they still had the growers tags on them. I was curious so when I arrived home I googled the name (Floyds citrus) and found he sold retail as well as wholesale. I gave him a call, asked for prices and drove down to see the trees. When I arrived it was in the middle of 100's of acres of mature orange trees and the same trees that the garden center and the big box stores wanted $26 for he was selling for $8 each AND he had dozens and dozens of each variety and unlimited knowledge. I loaded up 11 trees and headed home......sometimes it is better to seek out local sources.

I am not one to knock any of the big stores for quality or preference in merchandise however if you happen to be a Veteran and have an ID showing same (Veterans Org, VA I D or DD214) you can get a 10% discount at Lowes stores in St. Petersburg. I imagine but do not know if out of area stores do the same but in St. Pete, the Vet gets a discount. A large purchase of items and 10% can be worthwhile. HD only gives discounts to active duty personnel, at least the ones in St. Pete do. Though not directly related to gardening, it is useful to know.

@BambooR: I am not surprised by your info. If I knew where to go, I'd probably choose a nursery over the box store. My other problem is I don't own a truck. :-(
HD & Lowes are very close-by so I can also rent a truck at the same time, so it's more appealing due to the convenience. Maybe it's worth calling around to a few places though?

Btw...I only dream that I would have room for 11 trees in my yard! Lucky you!

FYI -
Both Home Depot and Lowes give 10% to military retirees, not just active duty. This includes all the stores I've been to in Pinellas county.
It's nice because I never had time to do home improvement while I was on active duty.

I have to disagree with you concerning the HD on 22nd Ave in St. Pete. Both myself and a fellow Korean War Vet were refused a discount at that store in Nov. of 2010. Possibly they have changed. I do know that across the Ave. at Lows we get our discounts.
