It is definately rose season here. I just took so many pictures mostly late last afternoon in the soft light.

Remember the short red zinnias I bought afew weeks ago? Well, I made a zinnias bowl for my back stoop and here they are really filled in. I think they are so pretty.

Oh my goodness, Rita!! Those are so incredible! I really like the planter corner and side terrace, although I'm sure if I looked again I'd choose another fave.

Your little red zinnias are awesome. I'll have to make a mental note to find some next season.

Your roses are just heavenly. I bet it smells heavenly too. You should enter some of these photos in the Dave's Garden Photo Contest this fall. There is a rose category and a landscape category you could try.

My Dainty Bess just seems extra susceptible to blackspot in my yard conditions. It is a nice, single, pink rose that can bloom rather regularly and makes a nice show, but it, like many others, seems to be struggling to get over last year and the bad freeze. Dainty Bess is beautiful in its simplicity. I also wonder if the strain of blackspot that I have might be more virulent than others, but I don't know. It has been clean up until the past couple weeks. Most of the others on the list have been quite clean up to the past two weeks which leaves me wondering what happened because my spray schedule has been consistent. I'm left scratching my head. The weather just got warmer and may have made things worse because of heat stress. My Pat Austin's normally nice flowers last for just a few minutes before they fry. I also have a creek that runs through the property, and the higher temperatures can raise the humidity in the yard's microclimate. That would make it worse also. So, I do have some variables. I cannot explain why I am seeing what I am seeing, I am only making my observations.

I'd probably hesitate a moment or two if the rose name evoked a negative reaction. And the marketers are aware of this. They don't want to have a namesake which most people would avoid. For example, years ago there was a cute lil' rose bush named after someone in the royal British family. "Fergie" to be exact. Welllll, soon after the introduction of that rose the real Fergie was photographed poolside while having her toes sucked by someone (not her husband). Needless to say this created a hubbub in the news and a somewhat negative association with the rose shrub. The marketers quickly changed the name of the shrub to "Sunseeker". That cracks me up every time I think of it. But while we have grown accustomed to the names of our roses, non-rose fanatics are simply unaware and my friends find it wildly amusing when I say something like, "That's George Burns! Isn't he looking good this year?" What IS in a name anyway? My last name is Butcher and it's prevented me from seeking employment as a baby sitter, veterinarian or even a medical examiner. But it is a great name for a hockey player.

Nasty! Glad I watched it though not surprised. Yes, we're germaphobes but better careful than not. My DH, DD and I went recently to High Point, NC for her soccer tournament. Stayed at a very nice Radisson. In our room, we found pubic hair on our sheets the first night and when we returned from the tournament the 2nd day around 4 pm, we found a condom (unused) in our bathroom sitting on the counter. Definitely not ours! Who the heck knows what went on in our room while we were gone. When we told the manager, he smiled and said, "Oh well, come with me...", took us downstairs and proceeded to credit our card $45 dollars for the trouble! Why $45? Did he think we needed the money? We weren't trying to get a discount! He didn't seem surprised. At another hotel last year, our comforter had a small, silver-dollar sized, almost unnoticeable fresh blood stain on it. Almost missed it because of the flower print on the comforter. It was still wet! I make it a point to inspect the room prior to use. This is how I find these things. Yes, I'm sure there's a lot of junk out there on a daily basis that we are exposed to, but if I can avoid some of them then that's better for me and my family. Just because these things are out there or, because as kids we did worse things than this, doesn't mean I have to let my guard down. Also, on airplanes. I had a couple of flight attendants as patients once. They filled me in on all kinds of stuff. From the blankets to the food. The blankets are used by some very dirty travelers who wrap themselves up in them from head to dirty, smelly, shoeless feet. She said they just re-fold the blankets and set them out again. I think the airlines may be doing things differently now. Someone can set me straight if this has changed.

Scotch whisky - I like some of the single malts - but I don't care for the really peaty ones like Laphroiag, I don't like gin, or tonic water. Fake sugars leave a bad aftertaste in my mouth, and diet sodas leave me thirstier than before - longing for something to wash away the aftertaste. Stevia, while it's healthy, doesn't even taste sweet to me. Tastes rather moldy or something. Other than those carrots (and I'll still eat those if served them, if cooked or well-shredded), I don't have any vegetables I actively dislike. Forgot to mention another food I dislike - cottage cheese. It's the curds, I probably had some milk gone bad as a kid and associate those curdy things with that experience. I can certainly eat it if hidden away in something like a lasagna. Ministrone soup is something that stirs up a similar reaction in me - I remember getting violently ill after eating some for lunch during a summer job in NYC. I am certain that the minestrone was not at fault and it was something I caught - but it left me with an instinctual revulsion that I just can't overcome quite yet. The memory is trapped into the horrible trip I took leaving work to go home early - getting into the train at Grand Central well before it was ready to leave... they had a few bathrooms then, but the doors were locked as the train wasn't underway, and... Let's just say, no more minestrone soup for me. I don't like the texture or concentrated sweetness of most dried fruits. Dates are particularly awful. Figs? Give me fresh ones every time! I can't think of a single dish that is improved with the addition of raisins, but at least they are small. On the other paw, I do dehydrate strawberries and grape tomatoes and love those. Otherwise, I like okra and offal/organ meats, and love lamb. Not fond of chicken breast - inferior to the tasty and moister dark meat. I love kale, but I prefer the less bitter variants - or to eat the more bitter ones when they are still "baby leafed".

Oh my! What an abundance of roses! I like the Rose Planter Corner color combination, Floribundaville is awesome, I love big yellow ones. Looking up at your house is pretty too, and that Cherry Sunblaze is stunning!

Gorgeous roses !!!!! I to love roses but switched over to daylilies. I still have some minis and some mini-floras but nothing on the grand scale that you do. Roses are pretty challenging to grow here in FL seeing we have every pest and fungis known to man and most likely some they haven't heard of yet. With the size of your garden it must be a full time job for you.

Rita,I love all your roses,Your yard reminds me of my nieces yard in Lompoc, CA She has dozens of roses.We were there last Sept and they were beautiful.I have Rose Rosette in mine so they all have to go already took out 6 with 8 more to go it is one bad disease for Roses.

Beachlily:If you didnt want to see her gorgeous roses, then why did you open her thread to look at them.Her title plainly saysDO NOT OPEN IF YOU DONT WANT TO SEE ROSES. I see no reason to be RUDE when you plainly had a choice.Some of us loves to see her roses and any other blooms she may have.

Awe, come on, Beachlily. Don't be a grump. I did warn everyone in the title not to open if not interested. This is the best they will look, I can't top these pictures. I am just proud of them and wanted to share. So I will keep future rose pictures on the Rose Galley or Cottage Garden forums.

Pat- I am sorry that you go hit with Rose Rosette. It is a horrible curse.

Nat- Cars do slow down and people gawk. Sometimes even take pictures. My neighbor was giving me effusive compliments earlier today.

Debra- I am not much for photo contests. I just like to post pictures on garden forums.

Jean- Thank you. I am glad you like to see my garden.

Linda- It is a fair amount of work, certainly more work than the daylilies. But I can not imagine my garden without the roses. Just like I can not imagine it without the daylilies.

To everyone else that left gracious comments, thank you! I just love my garden because there is almost always something blooming :-)

Rita - Some of these rose bushes look so large, like Cherry Sunblaze. Is this just one plant, or multiple plants that have grown together?

Debra- Cherry Sunblaze is three shrubs planted really close together. The little white roses in the pondside roses picture are actully two shrubs side by side. In the rose planter corner, the red in front Be Bop, is one plant but the pinkish white directly in back, Charles Aznavour, are two shrubs.

Florabundaville has lots of yellow in front. Four plants of Sunsprite, one of Sunblaze and one of Julia Child. All planted in a row about 18 inches apart. Then there is a pink at the very begining of the row. Above that row are many more roses going up the slope which is not terraced except for the front row. They are all one of each of whatever. Have lots in there. The exception is Home Run, red single rose, visable in the looking up at my house picture. It is two side by side.

The curved terrace and the mid yard have only one rose of whatever type but there are many roses and they are close together. In fact they are two roses deep (staggered) in the curved terrace and three deep in the mid part of the mid yard bed. Sort of football shaped.

Rita, I wonder what fungicide you use. The leaves all look so glossy and perfect. Of course, it is early in the season.

I use Infuse by Bonide. Another I recomment is the Bayer (brand) Advanced Desease Control for Roses and Flowers. NOT the 3 in 1. Just the fungicide. If I didn't spray, they would not look blackspot free, believe me.

Rita, please don't pay any attention to negative comments. Yes, this is a daylily forum, but I would be very disappointed if you stopped posting all the non-daylily pictures of your yard. I don't always comment but I look at all of them and have gotten a lot of good ideas from you. For people who love gardening, it is almost impossible to put an artificial boundary around the enthusiasm. I love your enthusiasm and expertise and pictures.

Thank you all again and especially Christine. Honestly, the best the roses ever look for the year is at the spring flush and early on in the spring flush while they are perfect and haven't dropped blooms is when I take pictures, pictures and more pictures. This year the roses have looked especially good so I am really happy with them.

Most of you here know about my garden and my garden projects and most things garden related. As much as I love my daylilies, I can't imagine just having daylilies here and not the rest, how boring. I would hate it. I see my daylilies as part of the overall garden and want it all to look good.
