The List You Don't Want to Be On (if you are a rose)

I sprayed again this morning, this time with Mancozeb. As I was doing so, I paid attention to who was healthy and who was not. I made a list of out of the 200+ roses I have in the yard, these are the ones that are the sickliest, in exam order, not degree of disease:

Two more showing rose mosaic virus for the first time, Pink Parfait and Pink Favorite.

These results show several things. It shows who is a problem. It also shows that only 30 out of 200+ are a problem. That is 15 percent. Conversely, 85 percent are either blackspot-free or showing so little that it is not a concern with my spray program which is every 2 weeks with the Bayer disease solution and every 3 weeks with Messenger. I think an 85 percent disease-free or nearly so says a lot, especially in my climate.

Thanks for the info. I don't have any of these roses....I can't imagine having so many to take care of...how I admire you!!! I'm pretty new and only have 4 bushes! Never heard of this disease..will have to look it up! Good luck!!!

May I add mine to the list? These are the ones most prone to blackspot: Mm Isaac Pereire, Louise Odier, Wm Shakespeare 2000, LD Braithwaite, Evelyn (the worst), Glamis Castle, A Shropshire Lad and Abraham Darby. I have many other roses that are doing just fine, even in close proximity to those affected. This is eight out of a total of forty--also not too bad a percentage I guess. Some of the healthiest?: St. Swithun, Reine des Violette, Officanalis Gertrude Jeckyll, Mary Rose, Sharifa Asma, Eglantyne, Carefree Sunrise, Nearly Wild and Flower Carpet.

Redsox, in case right now you want to read about different kinds of plants and plan out your beds so they will look like what you want them to, you might be interested in some perennial design books. One I like is "The Perennial Gardener's Design Primer" by Cohen and Ondra. I read it in the library and then bought a used copy online through Amazon. the information is realistic, I think. Also, a book I love is "The Well Tended Perennial Garden" - she tells you how to maintain and prune those perennials you wind up buying. The Southern Living Garden Book gives a run down on almost every plant that will grow in the south. I bought this one used too and refer to it often. You've gotten some great advice on plants, but if you're like me, you only have so much money to spend and will want to invest it in what will give you pleasure. I always like to know what I'm getting before I buy it. Good luck, and your babies will grow up too soon and then you'll be able to garden a lot more. In the meantime, I applaud your gardening at all; mine were a mess when my kids were little. Also, if there's any kind of garden club in your area, there will be a lot of old ladies like me who will love to help you get started and give you some plants from their yard.

Sherry, I'm not sure what my pleased rate really will be until maybe next year or later...! Though I must miserly-ly admit that I have my eye on one that's bloomed once and looked a bit toasty the rest of the year while ALL the others have attempted to bloom more and are lovely and green. (*cough* Mortimer Sackler *cough*) Masha, but you can see all those roses, so that is an excuse because it -must- tempt you to add them to your garden! The ones that I really really want are not at Descanso or Huntington (which are kinda-sorta near me). I saw a very sad almost-dead stick of Archduke Charles. It was almost comical because the one I wanted at the top of my list, they denied me seeing in action! "and one must support the nurseries, etc. etc......." Ingrid, hehe. :) I know what you're saying about finding more suitable varieties, though. I feel like I don't really know yet which ones will be winners. This summer (except for this past week) has been unseasonably NOT HOT, so... my roses are doing really well, mostly, but I feel like it's not really a good test. Next summer I bet will have a whole month or two of 100+ temps. rosefolly- I'd love to see more pictures of "whole gardens" with roses of members. :) Renee- you can almost always find a spot for an iris, though, right? and maybe one of them will rot. ;) OK THEN... I appreciate all the thoughtful advice, you guys. I'll get my Bermuda's Kathleen and I'll keep my up and growing pot ghetto with a feeling of slightly less guilt. ;) I actually think my pots look kinda cute. I have alyssum growing around the base of the pots like crazy. They love the little bit of extra water that seeps out of the rose pots.

Lynn, I did the same thing. I was lucky enought to find neighbors who lost all their plumeria in the same freeze I lost mine in. They were so excited, when I called to ask. I only charged them what I paid for the plants. Like you, I only kept the ones that I really love the color, size of the bloom and fragance. I went down to 36 plumeria. I ordered from Carol this year, only 3 plants, and one of them is waimea, which I can cancel, and buy yours if its not too big to mail out. Mine were all too big to mail. Nasty! Glad I watched it though not surprised. Yes, we're germaphobes but better careful than not. My DH, DD and I went recently to High Point, NC for her soccer tournament. Stayed at a very nice Radisson. In our room, we found pubic hair on our sheets the first night and when we returned from the tournament the 2nd day around 4 pm, we found a condom (unused) in our bathroom sitting on the counter. Definitely not ours! Who the heck knows what went on in our room while we were gone. When we told the manager, he smiled and said, "Oh well, come with me...", took us downstairs and proceeded to credit our card $45 dollars for the trouble! Why $45? Did he think we needed the money? We weren't trying to get a discount! He didn't seem surprised. At another hotel last year, our comforter had a small, silver-dollar sized, almost unnoticeable fresh blood stain on it. Almost missed it because of the flower print on the comforter. It was still wet! I make it a point to inspect the room prior to use. This is how I find these things. Yes, I'm sure there's a lot of junk out there on a daily basis that we are exposed to, but if I can avoid some of them then that's better for me and my family. Just because these things are out there or, because as kids we did worse things than this, doesn't mean I have to let my guard down. Also, on airplanes. I had a couple of flight attendants as patients once. They filled me in on all kinds of stuff. From the blankets to the food. The blankets are used by some very dirty travelers who wrap themselves up in them from head to dirty, smelly, shoeless feet. She said they just re-fold the blankets and set them out again. I think the airlines may be doing things differently now. Someone can set me straight if this has changed.

I tried to grow Midnight Blue for 2 years to my disappointment. It hardly ever bloomed and the foliage was always either sickly or gone. I was about to SP it last spring when I found out we had to sell the house and move anyway, so I left it for the new owner to kill--which I am pretty sure she did. :)

Night Owl and Golden Celebration both BS-prone in my garden. I could live without Night Owl-- I'd like to give it away-- but Golden Celebration, too late, I'm hooked! I admit that Lyda Rose gets a good bit of BS too, but she politely hides it under her skirts-- if you look down in the plant it's a messs but meanwhile the foliage you SEE looks just fine. For this clever trck and her consistent rebloom I love love love her!

Interesting that some of the roses y'all have blackspot problems with, were troubled here by rust and/or mildew.

Fisherman's Friend, Evelyn, and Mme. Isaac Periere had problems here.
Midnight Blue was free of mildew and rust, but it blackspotted HERE.
First rose that I have EVER seen defoliated by blackspot here.
It's gone, and so are the aforementioned three.
General Jack also mildewed and rusted -- I should never grow red HPs.
Night Owl, thus far, is disease-free here, tho, and Golden Celebration, after
15 or more hears, is ALMOST disease-free.

what I find shocking is dainty bess, I live 75 mi south of kc, and db seems to have very little bs, at least when I left a week ago.

My Dainty Bess just seems extra susceptible to blackspot in my yard conditions. It is a nice, single, pink rose that can bloom rather regularly and makes a nice show, but it, like many others, seems to be struggling to get over last year and the bad freeze. Dainty Bess is beautiful in its simplicity. I also wonder if the strain of blackspot that I have might be more virulent than others, but I don't know. It has been clean up until the past couple weeks. Most of the others on the list have been quite clean up to the past two weeks which leaves me wondering what happened because my spray schedule has been consistent. I'm left scratching my head. The weather just got warmer and may have made things worse because of heat stress. My Pat Austin's normally nice flowers last for just a few minutes before they fry. I also have a creek that runs through the property, and the higher temperatures can raise the humidity in the yard's microclimate. That would make it worse also. So, I do have some variables. I cannot explain why I am seeing what I am seeing, I am only making my observations.

I sp'ed my Emperor du Marc years ago! Just a BS magnet. Fischer Holmes I agree with also, but some of the others, like Silverado and Osiria are doing well enough for me. I've never seen a tinge of disease on Midnight Magic or Shi-Un! Funny how different roses react in different areas...

I'm surprised you have problems if you are faithfully spraying every two weeks with Bayer Disease Control. I think I am in one of the worst black spot areas in the country and I have virtually no BS if I spray regularly and thoroughly.

I have three of the roses on your list.

Last year I did an experiment and stopped spraying altogether. I wanted to get a serious look at which roses did well without chemical assistance and which did not. By Mid-July I had seen what I needed to know. Of the 2000+ varieties I grow, I would say that about 10% of these qualified as "healthy", which in my assessment terms meant that they held on to at least 80% of their foliage without Blackspot.

Ten percent! The other 90% of my collection did not meet that criteria of keeping 80% of its foliage undamaged by disease. Furthermore, a big portion of the healthy 10% were OGRs in the Gallica group and species roses. Very few modern repeat blooming varieties remained healthy enough to qualify as "no spray" roses. This information further supported my current breeding agenda to introduce more disease free varieties that can be grown well without chemicals. We need that kind of rose in the gardens of the future.

I plan on publishing the list of healthy varieties some time this Fall, on my web site, for anyone who's interested.
