Wow... I always wondered about how clean they washed them... a lot of hotels here have used the plastic glasses and coffee cups, which I wasn't crazy about until NOW!!

I won't use a glass in a hotel again!

They ALL do that. I know this for a fact. I worked as a server and bartender, in a lot of high end, multi star hotels and I know how the housekeeping staff did things with the rooms.

*Here is something to watch out for when you go out on NYE this year; bartenders are often told not to "waste time" washing the glassware in most places, on busy nights like NYE. Even the plastic champagne glasses they buy for the holiday get reused over and over and over all night without being washed. FACT. When I go out I watch for shortcuts like this when I get served and I have called bartenders on this a couple of times much to their chagrin. But you still don't see what goes on when they fill all those trays of champagne in a back room wher nobody can see anything.

If you go out to eat, most likely the place you go to won't have enough steak knives on hand, so the waiters are forced to step behind a door to hide, and wipe them down with a wet greasy towel - a towel that may have been used to wipe up a spill from the floor since there are never enough towels to go around either. Water glasses probably won't get washed on NYE either because the dishroom will be so backed up with so many other things. It is usually the HIGH END places that resort to this. The smaller, family owned places tend to take more pride in the establisment but that is not always a guarantee against short cuts like this. I could tell you stories that would curl your hair.

This is so disturbing and disgusting; do I have to start bringing my own plastic glasses with me now?!?!?

I didn't click the link because I saw this on tv a week or so ago. How gross!!!!!!!!!!! I will take paper cups and/or glasses from now on when staying at a hotel.

DISGUSTING! I don't stay in hotels often, but if I need to, I will pick up a pack of disposable glasses myself!

Remember those little tin cup things that folded up? I just may have to invest in tons of them!

my DH stays in Hotel room.... at least 2 or 3 nites a week...
and he has been getting really sick...
He ...is normally a real healthy person. He is in great shape...and was not in hotels for a while and feeling fine..
then started traveling again... and has been getting sick alot!
welll when I show him this... he will just flip out...
he is the kind of person who wipes the phone off before he uses it...

You know about that new virus that's going around.
I haven't heard of any new outbreaks in the past couple weeks, but still......

The portion about the gloves reminded me of a friend being in the Emergency Room a few years ago. I watched a nurse (or whoever) clean all the beds around us, about 8 of them. Most were really dirty and a couple were bloody. My girlfriend (and I with her) was the last one in this holding/observation area. That's the reason the rest of the beds were empty. When this woman finished, she came to friend to remove her IV and dress her wounds. All this without changing her gloves. I asked her to first change her gloves and then get some new gauze dressings since she'd handled them in these nasty gloves. People don't think, but my immediate feeling was she thought of the gloves only to protect herself.

I wont stay in a hotel. If you think the glasses are gross, what about the sheets?? I know a gal that worked in one that was told to just make the bed if the sheets LOOKED clean cause no one would know.

Nice...and I read/see this as I am sitting on a hotel bed. However, I never drink out of anything in a hotel...and get grossed out by the bedspreads the most. Ewwwww...now my skin is all crawly. lol

having traveled for 30 years and stayed in an ungodly amount of mid range hotels...I'm here to tell ya, I've never been sick from one...but I also take my own little plastic glasses...wear socks or slippers in the room and try not to SIT on the spreads without putting something like the sheets from the other bed on top of them...It's been awhile since I've done a layover...but try not to let your mind wonder to the point that you wont go anywhere...I'm sure with all the press the hotels are getting on this that the management is gonna have to step up to the plate and be more vigilant about room cleanliness!!

I watched a show a few weeks ago and apparently even high-end hotels seldom wash there bedspreads if they look clean. There were up to 13 different sperm samples found on one bedspread, the lowest was three. Yuck!

I also have traveled extensively for the past 30 years, and often as a child.
Never got sick, during or after a hotel stay.

Never took any "precautions".

Plastic (even the plastic wrap) absorbs microbes...i trust it less.

Monica I'm with you. I've stayed in a lot of hotels, for 2 and 3 weeks at a time. I sit on the bedspreads, I don't wear slippers, I drink from the glasses, I sleep on the sheets, I sit on the chairs. I rarely get sick and I don't ever remember getting sick after coming home from a trip. To be "grossed out" and overly cautious about these particular germs is silly. You encounter germs all day, on door handles of public buildings, on shopping carts, on canned goods you buy at the grocery store, on clothes you try on in the stores, etc. If you had to worry about all of those germs you'd stay home and live in a bubble.

I do agree that we have become germophobes. When I was a young child (half a century ago) we played in the dirt and God knows what went into our mouths. I do believe that we developed at least some resistance to lots of things because of it. Now, we're so afraid of contact with germs, that when our bodies do encounter them, they have no immunities against them.

BUT, if your husband or child cleaned your glassware in the manner in the video I don't think you'd be very accepting of it, do you? Be honest. Wanna drink? I don't think so.

Millions (billions?) of people stay in hotels and don't get sick, but it doesn't hurt to be cautious. I wear flipflops in the room. Next trip I'm taking alcohol wipes to wipe down a few things.

If the hotel uses those disposable plastic glasses, that looks pretty good. I would have no problem asking how the glasses in the rooms are cleaned, by the maids or by a dishwasher. Also, as someone else here suggested, it would not be difficult to take a collapsible camping cup or even throw a stack of paper cups in the suitcase.

DH and I always bring our own bottles of water and Fruit2O into hotels. I have used the stryo cups for coffee, but never those horrible water glasses. YUCKO

It's really no different then thinking about what go's on in the kitchens of resturants...just take precautions and don't let it stop you from going!! (and yeah...I'v been sick from eating out..but it doesn't stop me from goin out again...i'll do anything not to have to cook...LOL)

Yup.

And the bedspreads and blankets are NEVER changed - Not until they buy new ones to replace the old worn out ones.

If you ever take a look at the maid's carts as they push them down the hall you will see that they do not have any extra glassware on the carts to replace the ones in the room. Never. Well, maybe a couple to replace the ones stolen or broken in the rooms but that is all.

Nasty! Glad I watched it though not surprised. Yes, we're germaphobes but better careful than not. My DH, DD and I went recently to High Point, NC for her soccer tournament. Stayed at a very nice Radisson. In our room, we found pubic hair on our sheets the first night and when we returned from the tournament the 2nd day around 4 pm, we found a condom (unused) in our bathroom sitting on the counter. Definitely not ours! Who the heck knows what went on in our room while we were gone. When we told the manager, he smiled and said, "Oh well, come with me...", took us downstairs and proceeded to credit our card $45 dollars for the trouble! Why $45? Did he think we needed the money? We weren't trying to get a discount! He didn't seem surprised. At another hotel last year, our comforter had a small, silver-dollar sized, almost unnoticeable fresh blood stain on it. Almost missed it because of the flower print on the comforter. It was still wet! I make it a point to inspect the room prior to use. This is how I find these things. Yes, I'm sure there's a lot of junk out there on a daily basis that we are exposed to, but if I can avoid some of them then that's better for me and my family. Just because these things are out there or, because as kids we did worse things than this, doesn't mean I have to let my guard down.

Also, on airplanes. I had a couple of flight attendants as patients once. They filled me in on all kinds of stuff. From the blankets to the food. The blankets are used by some very dirty travelers who wrap themselves up in them from head to dirty, smelly, shoeless feet. She said they just re-fold the blankets and set them out again. I think the airlines may be doing things differently now. Someone can set me straight if this has changed.

You can always bring your own blanket on an airplane. I just keep them away from my face.
