Heck, I hope we get another freeze! (okay...just kidding! sorta...LOL)

I got 6 (4-ft tall) Ti-plants for $2 each - only a few damaged leaves. The roots are fine.

A large, split-leaf philodendron - $2

3 (2 gallon) Deffenbachias - varigated $2.50each

2 18-count annuals (petunias & yellow snapdragons) $4 total

Plus, several other gallon containers of flowering plants who just need a little warmth and pruning.

Total spent: $22

Most of these would have cost $10 to $20 per plant.

Cha-Ching!!!

Now, where's my shovel!!! :)

I hope someone has an answer for you. I'd also be curious. Remember, honey bees don't have a long life expectancy, so your dead ones didn't necessarily die as a result of anything in your yard, even though they happened to be in your yard when they died. I'd keep the plant for now. Martha

Brocks! We're heading down there and to Dearborn Farms tomorrow. To be honest, I shop all over. We bought 12 boxed roses at Dearborn Farms last spring, but I got some really nice potted roses in Lowe's (Woodbridge, Jersey City, and Old Bridge) and Wal-Mart (Secaucus, Cinnamonson, and Old Bridge) -- all of them did really well, and have leafed out like crazy this spring. Like you, I've been buying Superthrive at Wal-mart (it's not out yet, and I don't have all that much left right now -- and not every store had it, either) as well as fish emulsion. We got some great annuals there to fill in the gaps in the plants we bought in Van Wingerden's and Gro-Rite up in Lincoln Park. I get potting soil for my containers and garden soil to beef up the beds in Lowe's, and I get mulch there, too. I get pots and little plastic garden fencing in Wal-Mart. Home Depot was disappointing last year, especially since we'd gotten some wonderful roses there in the past (in Clifton and Woodbridge). But Clifton's garden center has gone -way- downhill, and Woodbridge isn't what is used to be. But none of them compare to Hoverman's, now sadly closed.

The box or instructions should have a date?? Maybe even the bottom of the unit?? Much cooler looking than your words described. Sooooo jealous. I never "got" the fondue thing much but my dh loves it. He is 6.5yrs older than me so I think he enjoyed more in his youth than I did. He got me a really nice one and we used it once. It has a bunch of little cups around it for toppings and cubed stuff. Hmmm now I am hungry again. As for Goodwill, you are better off shopping in nicer neighborhoods to get good stuff. Here in Sacto area there are plenty of dives. The one Golddust went to is in nice area but stuff is so so. I remember when I lived in Atlanta when dh was in school I went to yard sales and thrift stores in the really ritzy neighborhoods. Got amazing deals. I think my best score ever was the 1941 Oneida King Arthur silverplate silverware I picked up at a junky antique store back in 1985. Service for 8 in original box. Everything was half off so I paid about $20. The entire set is worth over $1500 and pieces are hard to find so a serving piece can run over $40 IF replacements unlimited has one. The pieces are hard to find because they stopped making it because of WW2. When I divorced my practice husband that set was only thing I made sure judge gave me out of all our belongings. He never cared about it anyway, it was my special find and I treasure it. Gold, now you got me itching to go thrifting. And yes Fly, where is the quilt?

Wait until fall, and check the 10-day weather forecast to make sure a late heat wave isn't on the way. ===>>> good idea .... but the key in MI .. for me anyway ... is a cool tending toward cold night... to offset whatever the day may bring .. so tending toward mid to late sept ... IN MY MI .. nights are dipping into the 50s ... and thats great .. we often talk about a recovery period at night ... i can go as late as the end of october ... only limited by how cold i want my hands to get in cold soil.. and dragging hoses around ... and putting away hoses.. so they dont freeze solid and burst ... i am sure.. as you go up zone.. you add weeks.. if not plant all winter long ... as sara noted.. dormant is best ... and that is around when the leaves of other trees are turning.. subject to yours being potted ... a dormant tree.. needs little water.. compared to an actively growing tree ... and it gives the plant months before the heat of next summer ... to get those roots settled.. to be ready ... ken ps: pots can go dormant earlier.. if nights are cold.. and the media loses all its heat every night ... or go dormant later.. because the pots stay warmer ... but exact specificity isnt all that big a deal ... its sunlight levels that trigger dormancy ... and as the sun declines for winter.. so do the plants ... temps are probably secondary ...

Amberroses: this was at Lowes on 22nd Ave. I went Sat and then returned again on Sun for more Ti plants and bought the last two. There was not a lot left on Sunday, but you never know. They may have moved more items to the 75% off rack. It seems Lowes really tries to move the stuff out. It is worth the trip.

Some plants were completely dead, but some that I saw and purchased had maybe just a few leaves brown. Hardly any damage. Full grown palms were 50% off...

I checked Home Depot too - they had nothing at all on sale.

Hey SPF, I was there today and did the same thing you did. The reason HD doesn't do it is that they don't OWN the plants, they RENT the space on consignment so they couldn't care less if the plants die or not, or get sold. Lowe's, on the other hand, owns the stuff and wants to make what they can on it....

I still have an HRC in a bucket for you but I don't see where the maters are growing...I have five of them that are 75 days old and only 8" tall! Thought I'd wait a few more weeks to see if they are worth messing with or not.

Oh wow...intersting that HD only rents the space. I had no idea!

So...what did you get Tom? Anything good? :) I have to force myself to not go back tomorrow....LOL

I understand on the HRC tomatoes. My lettuce has been 3-inches tall for two months now! ;-)

Lowes is a good place for bargains. I went to the one in Pinellas Park and got a bunch of petunias for $0.25 each. They looked as good as the $1 ones to me. I also got some dianthus for $0.50. My yard was so ugly after the cold I had to have some flowers to cheer me up. I will remember to check out the 22nd ave one too.

Yeah, I went to HD today and nothing on sale there, I did buy a variegated ginger plant anyway, just so it wouldn't be a wasted trip. I will head to lowes tomorrow and see what they have left. Thanks for the heads up.

no loss for HD means lower prices this spring. about half the garden is "pay per scan." the hit we took this winter so far is huge. my thinking is you don't put a bunch of half dead plants out on a rack, chuck 'em and put some quality out there. pays off in the long run. garden looks as good as it did on jan. 30th 2009!
