Old Florida, corn plot cover, crocket?

A letter (shown on tv local program today) in our (Pinellas) county museum archives, talks of having planted corn and having a man come and "spread crocket" on the ground - that it made it look very good. Then she wrote of having also planted other food crops in her garden, but didn't mention crocket.

I could track it down at the museum, but wondered if any of you have an idea what that was about. Googling "crocket" using various spellings has not produced an answer.

I know, it's too beautiful today (this week, this winter) to be at the computer, so I hope you are each and every one of you in your gardens - where I'm headed now. But this is bugging me!
