8-year-old wants to grow corn -- suggestions?

Starting last year (first year with space), I let my two children have a small garden plot to grow things. This year, my daughter wants to try broccoli, bush snap beans, bush lima beans and celery, and some flowers. My son wants to grow corn.

Corn is the one thing I have not even considered growing, lol.

Any tips on how to give us the best chance of success with the corn? Recommendations for a type to plant? (I already placed all my orders so it needs to be something common that I can find locally.) Should we do a short-season corn, which I think don't grow as tall? (The better for him to monitor it and pick it ...) What is the minimum space he needs? I was going to give him about 4 x 4 feet, but I guess he'll need more space, right?

One other question -- I see that we're late for broccoli (daughter just decided on this one today). I have seeds -- should we plant them at this point, or buy broccoli plants?
