Pink Lady Slippers

If anyone learns of anybody from Southern Manitoba who is selling pink ladyslippers, will you please let me know. We have a very limited supply of wild pink ladyslippers and someone has taken it upon themself to start digging them up. Maybe it is for their own garden, but I believe they are selling them. Within 2 days I found 17 new holes in the ground within a 1000 square meter area. I posted this in another forum a week ago, and since then I have learned that someone was digging and selling them last year as well. I don't know if the same person is at it again but the ladyslippers are protected and we would really like to catch who is doing this. Thank you for your help on this.

Welcome to the FN forum Suzy, itÂs too bad that you had to post this message as your first message here.

ItÂs a terrible shame whoever is doing this, I hope they get caught and get slapped with a big heavy fine!

Just this early spring, I bought a little Cypripedium reginae from Dominion Seed House who say they are certified that the plants offered have been produced in nurseries and have not been taken from their natural settings in which I paid a pretty penny doing so....sure hope itÂs happy in my garden.

Well good luck finding the culprit(s) and keep us updated.

Hi Suzy, I haven't heard of anyone selling them but I have heard over the years of people stealing them for their own gardens. How sad that most of them probably don't even survive the transplant either.

I wouldn't want to make the problem worse by telling people where to find them (I know where some are and the less said the better) but if you could give an area or tell me your RM, I will try to find out more.

Pairiemoon2 - Thank you very much. I think False Solomon's Seal has more leaves then these little guys. False Lily of the Valley only have two. But they are very similar. I will post another picture of that pot latter in the season. I'm so glad you liked it. I thought it made a nice combination. The plants across from the Blue Eyed Grass are English Daisies. They are a perennial continuous bloomer. They are in bloom when the snow melts in spring and they are in bloom when the snow flies in winter. I am deadheading like crazy. They are extremely hard to transplant. I moved five or six(only to a new location on the same property) in Jasper to make way for a home and only one survived. And I was generous with the soil I removed with the plants, but I moved them after they bloomed in spring. I was told by and old woman in Talking Rock to mark them and move them in late fall next time I want to transplant any. She had about 30 in her front yard under some Chestnut Oaks and she feeds them Azalea food after they bloom.

Dottie, though I live in Colorado, S of Colorado Springs, I experiment in Zone denial, and have many pleasant discoveries. The arid climate allows us to get away with things and grow a wider range of plants. The orchids grow in the moist, shady microclimates provided by numerous exotic conifers. The rattlesnakes are indeed Goodyera- oblongifolia and repens. Both are about to bloom now. Flowers are greenish white and insignificant. Foliage is more interesting than flowers. Calypso bloomed a few weeks ago, and Cypripedium is just finishing. By growing these in sunken pots, the soil can be made perfect - like in the wild. For Calypso, that means lots of almost totally decomposed wood and loam. These are dormant in summer, growing a solitary leaf in late summer, early fall, and maturing a flower bud over winter, under snow, that blooms as soon as the snow melts and medium thaws. Cypripedium are in loamy granitic soil with good drainage, clay in the very bottom of the pot. Much easier to grow than Calypso. Commercial Bletilla and Pleione are the least fussy, grown in mix of bark and loamy humus that drains fast. Corallorhiza require pine roots, from which they may steal a little food. These are really hard to establish, and even then, don't appear every year.

Thank you to those of you who are helping me put a stop to this. I love flowers and have been working on developing my own perennial beds... but would not even think of trying to transplant wild flowers into it. At least not ones taken from the wild.
I look forward to posting and reading more messages that are happier topics.
