Pink lady slippers

I have a gardening friend who is looking for pink lady slipper orchids. He's aware of their special needs and thinks he can successfully transplant them. I told him I would ask around here.

Does anybody know of a source for them?

Sometimes you can find them listed in the Market Bulletin. It is legal to sell these protected plants only if they came from your own property and were not dug from the wild. The success rate for transplanting these native orchids is very low.

Norma, Could be someone who's filling their garden as well. Here in Nova Scotia, they are on the endangered list and it is unlawful to pick the plant or the flower. We have them growing in a small meadow, both the pinks and the whites (which are even more rare). We've had folks ask if they could have some for their gardens, in which case I educated them in regards to the fact that it takes seven year for this plant to flower after the seed germinates, and once the flower is picked, the plant will never bloom again. We have 14 prescious 'Ladies' as we call them. They are real treasures!

Pairiemoon2 - Thank you very much. I think False Solomon's Seal has more leaves then these little guys. False Lily of the Valley only have two. But they are very similar. I will post another picture of that pot latter in the season. I'm so glad you liked it. I thought it made a nice combination. The plants across from the Blue Eyed Grass are English Daisies. They are a perennial continuous bloomer. They are in bloom when the snow melts in spring and they are in bloom when the snow flies in winter. I am deadheading like crazy. What part of MD do you live in? Of course I've lived here in Mont. Co all my life and have only seen one hummingbird, but my husband who has been living in this area for almost 20 years sees hummers every $%^^&$ year. Jealous? Who me?? No, I'm not jealous!! I've seen yellow lady slippers in various parts of the state and I've seen some nice looking jack in the pulpits in the local park.

Thanks Eddie and Gail. After finding out that these plants go for 50-100 bucks each, he is not interested in buying a quantity of them. If anybody has any, he would be willing to trade some great plants. I've also suggested he join the Ga Native Plant Society and see if he can rescue some.

They are extremely hard to transplant. I moved five or six(only to a new location on the same property) in Jasper to make way for a home and only one survived. And I was generous with the soil I removed with the plants, but I moved them after they bloomed in spring. I was told by and old woman in Talking Rock to mark them and move them in late fall next time I want to transplant any. She had about 30 in her front yard under some Chestnut Oaks and she feeds them Azalea food after they bloom.
