How can I make sure my pomegranate's productive?

Omegapainter

I have purchased a 'Wonderful' variety pomegranate tree from a nursery and planted it in a sunny spot in my backyard. Due to poor drainage because of a layer of clay about 6 feet under the soil, I have planted my pomegranate on a berm of cow manure with a bit of fertilizer on top.

The main goal of this pomegranate is to get as much fruit out of it as possible. The people at the nursery estimated it was about 3 years old. Some people tell me that the pomegranate must have it's flowers pollenated for them to develop into fruit, but others say it's self-pollenating and doesn't need pollination. Which is true? Are there any tricks for getting out more fruit? How can I tell if my tree is even ready to bear fruit?

Thank you in advance!
