How can I make sure my sprouts survive if I have to be away....

....from home for a while?

I've got beans, mesclun, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, some prairie flowers, and herbs (fennel, chamomile, basil) sprouting in containers right now. I'm not quite ready to plant out yet (Zone 5/West Suburbs of Chicago).

I have to be away for two weeks. How can I make sure that my little sprouts survive? Is it even possible? There really isn't a neighbor I can ask to supervise and friends are far enough away that I'm not comfortable asking. The first week I'm away there will be no one at home -- the second week I'm away my husband can plant sit.

Any suggestions?

I was thinking I'd make sure they were watered really well and then put them in a shaded, sheltered area outside so they don't bake. I know the lettuce, spinach, and mesclun would probably be fine planted out but I'm not sure if they would survive the neglect better in the ground or in milk jugs.

But, I'm really still so new at this that I'm not sure what to do.

Help!
