Moro Blood Orange report

This morning I picked 4 Blood Oranges off my small potted tree. I hoped that the cold weather might help the fruit color up. The peel color is still green/with a little orange/yellow.

The interior of two was a rich pinkish-orange, but the other two had lovely crimson inside, lining the segments of bright orange. The fruit smelled wonderful, and the juice was some of the best OJ I have ever tasted! I imagined I was tasting raspberry juice mixed with OJ. It is utterly delicious!

The look of the juice may scare some folks, since it has flecks of red in it that are easily seen.

So, even though the flesh of Florida-grown Moros is not dark red, the taste is still exceptional.

Blood orange is a type of sweet oranges and sweet oranges are all incompatible with Calamondin. There would be long term decline on Blood orange if it took. The solution is to graft a Meyer Lemon first to the Calamondin, and when the Meyer lemon has grown well, graft the Moro Blood Orange to it, and then you will have long lasting graft. I grafted 101-n-1 citrus tree so I have the experience.

Laura, Jan, and Steve, thank you. Yeah, I leave this tree outside as long as possible to try and get the good coloration. If the weather were just a tad bit milder, I'm sure the color would be even better. Steve, the flavor was excellent. Just the right amount of orange acidity and sweetness, just a hint of that wineberry flavor. In short, a very good orange - probably the best orange I've had in the past year's cycle. Josh

Jaydub....thank you but I'm sort of a little old lady with not very steady fingers and hands! Don't think I'd dare attempt air layering and not grafting either. My poor try at grafting last fall was a disaster :( . Wish I could leave this little tree in your expert hands tho. Thanks for your help. Fruity...on a whim I bought it on ebay from a small concern in Missouri. They were on ebay for about a year and had decent feedback, but perhaps from recipients who were not observing the trees for long. Encouraging that yours is doing what it's supposed to be doing finally. I guess as you say the cuts could have shocked the poor tree. I guess I'll have to cut it some slack. And maybe do as Laura said....buy a new one..

Thanks, Evan! It probably is the difference in climate, since it is definitely colder up here in the foothills. I leave my Moro outside as long as possible so that it gets as much time in the 30F's as I feel it can tolerate. This season, it actually got a light snow. Also, I've held off harvesting them for as long as possible. Josh

I wonder if they would develop a redder color if they were more mature?
From the thickness of the rind, they look like they could hang on the tree longer.
Just a guess, since I've never grown them.
Since it's the best OJ you've ever tasted I guess they are ripe enough though !

David, you may be right. Brite Leaf Nursery states harvest time is Dec-Feb, so there is some wiggle room. I was reading up on them, and learned the deep red color they get in California is due to lower temps, so I really didn't expect much color. The taste is great though!

D'Ann, want to wait a 3-4 more weeks to try the rest? Hopefully they will be even prettier- I can't imagine them tasting better though(G). Yummy!

BTW, the tree is only 2' tall.
