Flame Vines

On Sunday my family and I drove to Apopka. While driving south on US 441,just south of Mt.Dora. I saw a gorgeous sight. On both side of the road there are several trees

that are cover with what seems to be Pyrostegia venusta,

Flame Vines. The bright Orange flowers cascading down the

trees was such a show. We did not take any pictures because we were driving at the speed posted and it just came so sudden.

Has any one of you seen this?

I have thought of planting some next to some of my trees

to get the same affect of cascading tubular,orange flowers

down the tree. The trees I saw were densely covered by the flowers.

A coincidence! On Sunday I too was travelling farther south and saw an orange flowered vine beautifully gracing an otherwise boring l-o-n-g expanse of chainlink fence. I didn't know what it was but wasn't in a position to stop and examine it more closely (and perhaps take a picture to post here). The only plant I know of blooming orange now is cape honeysuckle but the viny nature of the plant I saw from the roadway didn't match. Now you've ID'd it for me and I didn't even have to ask. Thanks.

I've seen it during other trips south. It certainly is eye catching.

I am growing Flame Vine in a large pot and on a trellis. As you have seen, while gorgeous, they can consume buildings, trees and anything standing still too long.

Oddly, mine is not blooming. I sure hope to see some blooms soon! I'm wondering if it's one of those plants that doesn't do well 'in captivity'.

Grant - Thanks for the link. I'm bookmarking it for now since I don't want to murder anything else in this heat. If I still can't find any here early this fall I'll take the plunge and order them then. Maybe even seeds... if I feel particularly brave. I've only grown really simple things from seeds... like grass, lol! Pagancat - Have you been peeking at my backyard? I've got the shadecloth draped over both the chairs and fence - it's working fairly well. They're wilty but hanging on. I think some of the problem is shock because I still have one in a pot that I put out there and it's actually doing a little bettter than the planted ones. *sigh* I took all five vines that they had at Rillito (in Tucson on La Cholla near Orange Grove). I think they only started with 16. I don't know if they're getting more or not but for months all I heard from various nurseries was that the suppliers didn't have them. Well, she buckled. Actually the umbrella poll cracked due to the combination of the weight on top and high winds. This "tree" is a beauty and I got so many compliments on it. I'm cutting it at about 4 ft and am going to replace the support with a wooden one. It took less than a year to achieve this growth. I love this vine.

Hi dpsgkp, I was very interested to read your posting re the Flame Vine and would like to ask if I could possibly obtain a young plant. I have been chasing one for several years since I was forced to retire as a result of my military service. Tropicals are my consuming passion, I have a jade vine and several other tropicals growing on my property and have had a space reserved for a Macuna bennettii for ages. I would appreciate any assistance you may be able to give me and of course if I can assist you in any way I would be only to happy to. I will be in Cairns travelling to Marbuiag Island in the Torres stait in April to visit my son who is a teacher there if that would help. I have no experience with this, but since no one has responded, I can't find any reference to this growing in a zone colder than 8b, and that is with winter protection and it will die back to the ground there. So I can't imagine that it will grow in 6b, even with heavy mulch. Perhaps in a pot that you can bring into a cool but above freezing place for the winter you might be successful.

If you go to the web site below you may see trees cover
with these flowers. It was much more beautiful to see them
in person as I did. It was so unexpected. As you stated,
juneroses,the surroundings are very boring.

They're blooming like crazy around here right now.
Extraordinary along a chain link fence.
And they will climb trees, cover sheds or houses if you let them.
Mine follows the fence and grows up the surrounding trees.
But is not yet flowering as well as one of my neighbor's on the next road over.
It's so spectacular, and so overwhelming too.

They can kinda take things over. Nothing is worse than the
wild grape vine. My neighbor spread flame vine seed 10 years ago. It covers alot of stuff but early this fall I spent a half day cutting off vines at waist level. It worked
pretty good but I thik it is going to pull down the telephone pole one day. I really hate grape vine they can really kill a tree by covering it up shade and strangulation..

One common name is Fl flame vine, and while lovely, it only blooms for a short while, now, and the rest of the year it is just leaves. I love vines, so I grow it, but wanted everyone to know it doesn't bloom all year. Now the Mex. flame vine has a daisy like flower and blooms all year long. For me both are in bloom now.

Yes I have been enjoying the sight on my commute to work from Deltona to Altamonte. So pretty!
