Flame Seedless Grape for zone 10?!
Comments (3)The only ones I've been able to find that are somewhat recommended for Florida are: black spanish, lake emerald, southern home, and blanc du bois. The lake emerald was found at lowes, when they got their blueberry, blackberry, and grape plants in. The southern home was found at wally world of all places just a few days ago, which apparently come from the same nursery lowes got their blueberries from. So, check out both of those places, even home depot, for a few that may do ok in Florida. The blanc du bois and black spanish, I got from willis. These varieties are recommended usually as grafted plants, but willis sells own-root plants. If you're good at grafting, you could buy the own-root plants and graft them on better rootstock. I can tell you that the black spanish has the most vigorous and deep root system of all of the bunch grapes I've tried in Florida so far though. I know it's not flame seedless, but maybe it'll give you some other ideas....See MoreWill a fig survive my garage in this zone 5 winter?
Comments (18)Also if is not my problem (I live in Italy Z9b),I'm looking for solutions for fig problem on cold. Normally Stem and branches of well hardened fig' wood support up to -15°C (5°F), Normally in cold regions instead the wood may be not well hardened and too much watered (herbaceous wood). Heat and less watering in late summer aid the hardening. The roots are quite less cold resistant because in nature are protected by the soil. In ground (in natural ambient) at the deep of one foot the temp may be normally over the freezing. For so: temp have to be in a range of from 25°F up to 40°F, insulation may have sense in the surface of contact to the paving, if the paving is frost; other insulations have no sense because in a room slowly all the temperatures become levelled. Insulation have sense only in case of localized active heating. As signaled is very dangerous raising of temp for long time and lot over 40°F, for this may be utile, open the garage or put outside the tree. May be utile for you use a Min-Max termometer to know the evolution of temp in your garage, of if you use localized heating (and so protections) inside the protections. Ciao, Sergnic (Excuse all if repeat answers, or I'm in contrast, ..but I have'nt time to translated all them). If temp stay between 32°f TO 40, some small watering may be utile....See Morewanted: wanted grape cuttings even if not in my zone!
Comments (5)I don't have any cuttings but I would recommend 'Reliance' grapes they are hardy to USDA z4 so they should be able to handle your climate plus they are fairly disease resistant, however they tend to have some problems with berry cracking and I've heard they are susceptible to deer and other pests. Remember that this is an especially vigorous grower....See MoreNeed help understanding grape training
Comments (7)Weeper: Like you I found a lot of conflicting information out there. I eventually stumbled across Prof. Tom Zabadal's youtube chanel. In a nutshell, he has taken a lot of his lectures aimed at commerical growers and posted them online. There is a lot of info, far more than most will want but better too much than too little. It is all based on a long career of field work in viniculture dating back to the early 70's and is very practical vs pure academia. All trainign methods are covered from the most common to obscure with pro's and con's for each system. Some 34 videos in all and still adding regularly. Guyot can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eO_zyG5BGTg but if considering that you may want to look at umbtrella kniffen which should be more productive. He will also explain why. Trying to push the zone? in that case perhaps fan training is for you. Some of the later videos on pruning for winter injury are helpful in assuring that the training method and style of pruning do not promote winter die back. All in all I found a lot of info made available thru this channel. Its a bit like taking a course but you can skip thru the sections that are not applicable to what you want to do or learn. 34 videos and counting all posted here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ7llYhkcOS5eBIS9nMy4LA . Cheers, Dave...See MoreUser
