Need help with grape vines.
Comments (2)There is no trunk damage from rodents and yes the vines got regular watering each week. We did have an enormous amount of rain though at the beginning of the fall. At that time, i had stopped watering them. Aside from that, everything appeared to be just fine. Yeah i hear ya about the few years. It's one of the reason i went with the geneva system, i babied those plants and took my time choosing 2 main trunks....See MoreHelp needed puring grape vine- pics
Comments (6)I'll try. Only the top plant is large enough to perhaps bear any fruit this yr. Cut the smaller plant back severely and train the strongest shoot up a stake to try for fruit next yr. When that shoot reaches the top wire, pinch it back to get a shoot running in each direction. Those shoots, which grow this yr, will produce fruit next yr. So don't prune them off next winter. On the larger plant I cann't tell what is last yrs wood and what is older. Only last yrs wood will bear this yr. If you are going to get fruit this yr it will be on the shoot labeled B1. Cut off that bottom shoot going left. Also cut off the shoot just to the left of B1. It looks like older wood. Always cut off as much older wood as possible while leaving enough of last years wood to produce a crop. Now you are left with the B1 shoot that branches right and left. These canes are the one label C1 and above. If they are last yrs wood, they may fruit this yr. Cut off every side branch below C1. Keep one cane at C1 or higher going in each direction and see if they fruit. Each yr after this you will keep one cane going in each direction that grew the prior yr and cut off all other canes. This gives you a T shaped framework after pruning each yr. It's as simple as that. Your vines lack enough vigor to bear much fruit. They either need more water or more fertilizer, assuming they are getting enough light. The Fruitnut...See More?'s on grape vine training for hieght....arbor
Comments (4)Fruitnut is dead on... some varieties will grow 20+ feet in a single season while others not much at all. A healthy, established vine should be able to reach your 12+ foot arbor in a single season. What I would do is let them grow all bushy this year (don't prune and remove all clusters) to produce the best root structure possible. Then cut them back to 2 or 3 buds late next winter. They will explode with growth - select the strongest shoot and train it up your arbor (again removing the clusters so that it will be more vigorous). I think I'd put all the vines in the ground if possible as they will suffer some shock when you transplant from the pots. Are we talking total shade all day? Also 6 vines seems like a lot for an arbor. Established grape vines are quite vigorous and can grow quite large - it could turn into a mess if they are too close together. Athena - I think it is always a good idea to let them establish the first year. You'll get thicker trunks with longer nodes (short nodes are a pain as fruitnut pointed out). The general rule is you want shoots at least as thick as a pencil all the way to the height / length you will be keeping. If not, cut it back and start over....See MoreMy First Soil reports! Comments (37)It's not me that is the problem when it comes to this community. I have lived in several countries and many different cultures and societies in my life. I have always had great community interactivity. But I have never seen such a close minded xenophobic community as this one near me. One of them told me once that, "If you moved here when you were 10 years old and lived here until you were 90, you would still be considered an Outsider." When comes to culture, I am cultural chameleon and generally able to fit into any community, but it is this very quality that these xenophobic people hate about me. They cannot stand anything that is different or anyone that has an appreciation for anything different then how they think and act. When I first got here, I made great efforts to friend them. I once invited some over to my house to visit. I prepared them a nice meal. They would not touch the food and told me bluntly that if I ever invited them over again, that I had to promise not to cook anything because they have very specific ways they like their food cooked and did not appreciate me putting them into a position where they were pushed to eat something they were not familiar with. You might think that they are some type of health nuts, but the exact opposite is true. After asking around, I found out that what they meant was that, they only eat food that is cooked in the same way they they have eaten it all their life (the way their mom cooked it). I am not joking here. And I am not talking about just a select few people, it is the whole dang area in general. Abilene Texas is a city of about 150,000 people and there is not one exotic restaurant in the entire city. About all you can find is Taco Bell style Texmex, hamburgers, BBQ and low quality Buffet style Chinese places. Any exotic places that do open up like Genghis Grill, close down shortly there after. Not even Zucchini's could stay open here. As far as water quality, goes, extremely hard is an understatement. I tested it for hardness yesterday and it showed 824 ppm....See Moresim sim
