Need help with grape vines.

Last year I built a geneva double curtain trellis and planted 4 grape vines. I planted the folloing varieties, Himrod, Golden Muscat, Heavenly Blue and Black Mannukah. I trained the vines to have 2 trunks. Each vine grew extremely well. All the trunks reached a height of 6 feet plus an additional 6 feet of lateral growth on the trellis wires in both directions. I noticed that all of my vines are brittle and completely dead. The Black Mannukah and heavenly blue appear to be 100% dead. I do not see any evidence of a living xylem even 6 inches above ground. The golden muscat and himrod, both have a dead phloem but a green xylem at about 2-3' off the ground. But all the branches are dead.

Any idea what would have caused the die off? We had a very warm winter here and the lowest temperature it got down to was 24 degrees for 1 night. Other than that, it barely got below freezing much this winter. What should i do? Should i remove the mannukah and blue grapes vines and start over? Any advice would be great.

Did they get regular water? Is there any trunk damage from rodents? The ones that look completely dead, I would cut most but not all away, it may surprise you and throw up a shoot if the roots are still hardy. It takes a few years to establish grapes, but once you do they are hard to kill. Good luck with them, I killed a few before I finally got mine going.

There is no trunk damage from rodents and yes the vines got regular watering each week. We did have an enormous amount of rain though at the beginning of the fall. At that time, i had stopped watering them. Aside from that, everything appeared to be just fine. Yeah i hear ya about the few years. It's one of the reason i went with the geneva system, i babied those plants and took my time choosing 2 main trunks.

When I think of pruning a muscadine I think of pruning it out of trees and power lines. Here's my two muscadines (7,8,9? yrs old). They were carefully picked out and bought but I cannot remember their names now. They cover that entire side of that yard (several trees) and have been cut out of the power lines. A good old mature muscadine makes a think tangle of vine that you can lay in without fear of falling through. The old gardening books called it a bower. So you climb the tree, lay in the vine and eat to your hearts delight. As a kid that's how we did it with the wild vines (we would climb 40' in a pine tree and lay in the wild muscadine vine to eat grapes)- and that's how I do it now.

And lastly, this is actually on my Healthier vine. >> I think I wasn't watering them enough when it started warming up and only really started watering them every two days about a month ago so this could be an older leaf from that. But just putting this here in case it can help>

That is caused by blister mites and will not harm the fruit. Stylet oil will kill the mites.

Miracle Gro potting soil is not very well recommended for any long term container growth. I'd suggest you visit the Container Gardening forum for some insight on a better quality potting medium as well as various suggestion for growing just about anything in a container. You should be aware that growing large vines - like grapes - in a container is in effect a natural dwarfing mechanism. They produce very large root systems to support all that top growth and if the root development is restricted - like it would be in any but an extremely large container - then the top growth will be reduced as well. At this time of year, insects or other minor leaf issues are of no concern on a vine or plant that loses its leaves for the winter. Just clean up and discard after they fall naturally. No need to treat.
