Seedling - first ever! 2 pix

Okay, I bought the seeds, so I did get a little head start, but here is the very first seedling I have ever had bloom.

Since I am so new to DLs and don't know too much about what is new and desirable, I'm not sure if all of you will think there is anything special about this one, but I like it. Oh, and it is wonderfully fragrant too.

I am almost positive the cross here is Itza Butte X Angel Walker

Congratulations on your seed babies!!! I will be starting my seeds next weekend as over the years, based on the kooky weather, I have worked on trying to find the best time to start seeds so that the plants would be at the right size to plant out when the temps have warmed up for summer (I usually try to get them out on or before Memorial Day). I know last year I was a bit late getting started (did it around the 2nd week of April) and the year before, I was about a week too early (starting them around the 3rd week of March, where they were really overgrown before I got chance to plant them out near the end of May). So this year, I'm aiming for the last week of March/first week of April. I have red hot pokers that I started from seed last year and overwintered outside this past winter, and they still have a few green leaves (they form bulbs). I'm hoping they are okay (I kept them mostly dry or barely moist through winter). Am crossing fingers for them! I want to start some scarlet runner beans because they did wonderfully last year and my hummers loved them! Also plan to start some tomatoes, but I'm trying to decide which ones to do this year from seeds that I have from last year.

Thank you all for the words of encouragement! I needed this reward after all the trouble with the bulb fly. This past fall I took every bulb I have (this is my original eight purchased bulbs and hundreds of seedlings) and washed the soil off completely. I separated each bulb so they were all singles and inspected them and soaked them in huge buckets of water with bleach to try to kill any bulb flies that might have gotten in during the summer outside. This was backbreaking work and took the whole day. I repotted every one of them and still found the maggots in some containers during the winter and an adult NBF on the windowsill in January. I mean I looked carefully at each bulb with the roots completely cleaned and didn't see anything that looked like a hole. Either the larva are microscopically small (and not killed by a soak in bleach water) or it was in the bags of potting soil I re-potted them with. I've read about the hot water treatment, but it's just not feasible for this many bulbs. I may never take them outside again. It's just too much work going through all that plus the lugging all those pots in and out. Anyway - thanks again and I'll post the next ones that bloom in the next few weeks. Jackie

Rita, I don't know why that petal doesn't open up. Maybe it will later. The prples seem to be favorites with most folks... Jean, I'm so glad you like them. This is the second bloom year for all of them except the white spuf.. Nancy, i was really fortunate this year with the seedlings. I guess the rain did it for me but they really are pretty in the patch... Michelle, give me another year to see how they do and it maybe be able to be divided. Seedlings are fine,just water when needed.I just stick them under the patio table for winter,more to keep the long spells of rain we usually get away.No need to move them until the cold weather starts.If you're gonna garage them(though not really nessecary) bring them out when buds swell and shove them under a table or something if you expect a frost. As Mike says,Just leave the seeds out in the open,don't cover with anything and forget about them 'til next year.You can put a mesh or something over them if you like to keep 'thieves' away but nothing waterproof.Again,next spring be prepared to protect them from frost once they've appeared. Pruning's a matter of choice.You could snip off those little branches,the plant wouldn't notice...unless you prefer the direction they're growing,then remove others.

I can't get over how the form has changed during the day. Those photos were taken this morning at about 8:30, these were taken at 4:00 or so. I love how the sepals have gotten that little fold/pleat in them.

Does the forum usually change during the day or is it just the awful heat doing strange things to this bloom?

Doesn't that give you a thrill? It will take a while before you can tell just how your plant is going to do in all types of heat and weather and if it is better than others in your yard you may decide to keep it. I still laugh when I remember the first seeds I planted about 10 years ago. They were all from the same pod, about 15 of them, so old dummy me put them all in one pot. Was I flabergasted when there was a difference between them. It was a cross between Black Plush x Rosie Meyer. Only one really appealed to me when they bloomed and I finally gave it a Garden Name (Jack O Lantern) and I still have it. It does better than most of the other plants in the garden. Of the 211 seedlings I planted several years ago, only one is still left, 1982, and since it does better than most of my newer ones, opens early and holds up in the heat, it will probably be around 10 years from now when many of the others are gone. There is no bigger thrill than having a plant in your yard that is one of your own babies.

Oh ROFL! How embarrassing. I think the heat got to my brain today. SHEESH

Anyway, thanks for the nice comments despite my odd typo LOLOLOL! This seedling has about 15 more buds on it, so I will certianly have a bunch of blooms to compare it to (and bore you all to tears with)....

And thanks for being so tolerant of my enthusiasm :-)
