What Have You Winter Sown This Year and When?

Well, I dug a hole in a snowbank today and started my first ever winter sowing.

I've had some old milk crates stashed away because I thought something so sturdy would maybe some day be useful. Funny how they happen to hold 4 milk jugs, LOL!

I "planted" leeks, delphinium, dames rocket, and maltese cross.

The first jug I found frustrating, but by the fourth I had a system. Hope to do more tomorrow.

My first WSing was on February 6. I planted yellow lupines and blue fescue (grass). On the 13th, i planted gaillardia, white lychnis, Shasta daisies, acquilegia 'Norah Barlow', hesperis matronalis (Dame's Rocket), Leopard's bane, echinacea (white), asclepias tuberosa (keep trying this....), campanula 'Blue Clips' and heliopsis var. 'Lorraine Sunshine'.

These are not "buried", but sitting along the wall of house on the deck with snow heaped up around them. I can't reach the place where i usually put my WSing, so i just left them there. There won't be room for more, so i'll have to find another place to put what i intend to do this weekend (maybe) - got some seeds from a friend. :)

Marcia, you say you keep trying asclepias tuberosa. I've got seeds for asclepias incarnata.

What kind of problems are you having? I assume not many are germinating, or do they really hate being transplanted?

As a beginner, do you think I'd better try them inside instead? Lynn

I upload pictures to a folder on a friend's web server, and use the same html link to his folder, instead of a photo-hosting website. Claire over on the New England Gardening forum uses Tinypic. According to her, the advantage of TinyPic.com is that it's very easy to upload one photo and link to it, and you don't have to set up an account. The disadvantage is that you can only upload one photo at a time, which is not useful if you want to show many photos. Claire's instructions for using Tinypic.com: 1. The photo files on your computer must be in a format such as jpeg or jpg. 2. Using Tiny Pic, you hit the "Choose File" button and it searches your computer desktop. 3. Choose one then select a size ("Resize" button), and then UPLOAD NOW. 4. When the file is uploaded, copy the HTML tag, not the IMG tag. 5. Paste the HTML tag in your post. I have been trying various methods over the last few nights. Rolled up damp newspaper was my least favorite/effective method. White wine worked fairly well. Oil in a fishy smelling cat food can also worked well. But I tried the soy sauce/oil last night, and that was by far the most effective. I got about a dozen dead earwigs a night with the wine and oil/cat food. With the soy sauce method I probably had 200 dead earwigs overnight. A friend also told me 30-40 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract mixed in a small spray bottle and sprayed on and around the plants keeps them away. Hopefully with these two methods, I can get rid of them!

Well I don't do winter sowing, but I have started some delphiniums. They are doing their cold spell in the fridge.

I've had little luck with germination, and what germinates doesn't make it to transplanting stage. I'm not sure why - my notes aren't all that detailed.

Yesterday I planted Sparkles Mix Livingstone Daisy ( Ice Plant?), Milkweed (crossed my fingers Marcia), Arctic Fire Dianthus, and Canadian Sunset Marigold. Couldn't remember if I could winter sow the marigolds, but I had one more jug ready and waiting, so I did it anyway.

I don't usually do annuals until into April, but i'm sure the marigolds will be okay. If you happen to get a long streak of really warm weather, they might sprout and then you'll have to protect them from frost. This year it seems as if a streak of warm weather is highly unlikely! LOL

I put my marigolds out in Mar. last year and they grew just fine. Just finished putting the last of my w/s out. Wait.....I think there's more to come!

Well this year I'm really hoping that my wintersowing takes. Last year we went to Hawaii just after things started to sprout and they didn't make it. So far I have five different varieties of columbine, coneflower, lupins, and monkshood. I sure hope I get something, my grow lights are already full and I haven't even started the tomatoes yet. c
