I need to make a correction on the sow date. According to my notes I sowed them on Jan 21, not the 10th. The soil is Miracle Gro potting mix. As for the strain, it was just one I happened to pick up and later learned it is on our extention agency's list of good varieties for this area. While I have some experience growing flowers and certain vegetables from seed, I've never grown broccoli before, this is my first attempt. We shall see what happens.

I haven't done anything yet (other than prep containers). I have a few seeds, but I thought it was a little early in the DFW area (I thought end of Jan and Feb). I guess I should get going. Have had some warm days recently.

What Have You Winter Sown This Year and When?

My first WSing was on February 6. I planted yellow lupines and blue fescue (grass). On the 13th, i planted gaillardia, white lychnis, Shasta daisies, acquilegia 'Norah Barlow', hesperis matronalis (Dame's Rocket), Leopard's bane, echinacea (white), asclepias tuberosa (keep trying this....), campanula 'Blue Clips' and heliopsis var. 'Lorraine Sunshine'. These are not "buried", but sitting along the wall of house on the deck with snow heaped up around them. I can't reach the place where i usually put my WSing, so i just left them there. There won't be room for more, so i'll have to find another place to put what i intend to do this weekend (maybe) - got some seeds from a friend. :)

Actually, I just remembered a long time ago my friend had a California fan palm in his back yard, and it was grown locally from seed. I believe it was in the ground for quiet a few years and it was well established. It pulled through the winters unprotected, but his neighbor hood "code" made him cut it down because it still had the beard on it and even when pruned they still did not like it, he was not so happy about that. But I think I will be going with the California fan palm. Our winters are dry and it only gets really cold here for about 2 weeks until it starts to warm up. I'll give it a try!
