Thanks Sharon, I'll shovel more snow on when what is there melts. It's my first year doing this and I'm a little nervous. If it works, great I'll be doing lots more next year. If it doesn't I'll be disappointed as that means I'll have to buy all new Aquilegia seeds again as I WS all of them.

Sierra, if you have extra I don't think I have any white or light purple delphiniums in my garden. :D

I noticed when I picked up milk the other day that 2L now comes in a jug instead of a carton. That's better than pop bottles as I can't recycle milk jugs here plus than I get my deposit back on pop bottles. (What can I say, I'm cheap.)

Thank you Veggieluv, we luv you too! Yes, the 'Winter Sowing Method' is not winter sowing a field in October with a green manure to turn under in April, or a winter rye, etc, to be cut for crop or fodder the next Spring. When you google Winter Sowing, the first hundred hits are dominated by the method, the ancient agricultural practice is going further and further behind the main pages. A few years back I went down to Beltsville seeking guidance and they very kindly and patiently gave it to me, as well taught me how to manage and grow my website. And it is that scholarly guidance which is why the method dominates over the ancient farming practice when you search the internet for 'Winter Sowing'. If you recheck the FAQs you'll see that the first one there is "How to Winter Sow", I think that is what you are referring to as what you want to read again. The FAQs were needed because there was a LOT of explaining because as you say, it is counter-intuitve, and it is also counter-cultural; many people believe that you need those heat mats and light set-ups to begin any sort of seed, and among the more experienced there were arguements that Deno's set of numbers had to be followed exactly. So, God bless Beltsville as they were the first authority who didn't start their convo with "No. You're crazy." I did good, so did they. We have a work-in-progress Database, there are veggies and herbs listed. I repeat it is a work in progress and it was created by the forum, my hands were not involved in its creation, but do to the need to house it in a reliable url, it is now at WinterSown.Org. Last week I finished the "cleaning and dusting", reframed it into a nicer grid, and uploaded the DB. The DB is in plain-text, you don't need Excel or Word or any database reading program, you can just click on the links and there it is. Keep in mind that not seeing a plant there doesn't mean that it can't be WS, and seeing a "NO" there also doesn't mean that it can't be WS--this is because there hasn't yet been enough years of entry to reliably prove and disprove particular plants. The DB is a suggestion and guide, but it is not the know-all, end-all, do-all, be-all for what seeds you can sow with the method. I am very glad that VeggieLuv mentioned tomatoes and peppers, initially most people think that you can't WS them. Consider the plants that reseed in your garden--we've all heard the legendary tales about toms germinating in cracks in sidewalks and growing to be the healthiest plants anyone has ever seen. Toms do reseed in a temperate climate because they're from a temperate climate, peppers and eggplants and all solanums can reseed. It does make sense that it you live in zone five or colder, that you choose a short season tom and not a 110 dtm type because you may be bringing in green fruits to ripen on the counter. Short season gardens need short season varieties. Give it a try, if you're unsure of the method then hold back some seeds to sow by whatever means you want, then at the end of the season compare the vigor, health, flowers or crops of what you sow. Hi Tova! Good to see you back here again! I am still mostly in hibernation mode and getting some company (my Mom and Sister are coming for a week as of today) so I haven't given it too much thought besides planning the flowerbeds and containers. I am definately not going to W/S as much this year because most of my perennials are starting to fill in now and I have limited city-lot space! LOL --- but yeah, I always end up W/S'ing more then I plan on (and then beg friends/neighbours to take plants off my hands LOL) What worked best last year? Sunflowers, cosmos, lavatera, to mention just a few of my must-haves. I've had great success W/S'ing lupines for a few years now. I love watching them come up because they are one of the earliest sprouters. Ang

Hi! My name is Karen and I've posted some questions on the geranium forum and got some good advice, but noone is terribly chatty over there so I was wondering if this is a good forum for me to join. Are you taking new members?? I'm in IL and we started over 700 (agh!)pelargoniums, or whatever they are called. We call them geraniums. Anyway, I was told to pinch and went to town and I hope I did it right because I have some sad plants. And it's about time to start hardening off...and I haven't a clue what I'm doing! We have two portable greenhouses outside with heaters in them and we put the impatiens and pansies, I think, in there. But the geraniums are inside under grow lights and in sunny windows (as sunny as it gets during the long awaited IL 'Spring' if that's what you call it!) Can anyone help me keep them alive?

Sprouts!! I have sprouts!!

I have about 200 containers outside, and have been holding my breath that this Winter Sowing thing would work. I haven't been peeking at them except to glance into the bottles that I can easily see into, but yesterday, I found a sprout here and there in a few containers. I can't even remember what they were except for one hollyhock. Now that we're expecting temps to be above freezing this week I'll be checking more often and reporting my findings.

I checked some more of the containers today and found rootlets beginning in some Scarlet Flax and some Asclepias! :) So, almost sprouts!

To celebrate, i did ten more containers today:

I was checking my containers today and I see a tiny little root growing on the venidium. Not quite a sprout yet but super close now! Close enough to be doing the Happy Dance that's for sure! LOL

OK, I think I will be out there today adding more things. I'll be giving things away again come planting-out time but I can't stop myself from starting up everything! LOL

I just came in form hauling out some of the containers I used last year for WSing. Some of them still have soil in them and are still frozen so I was thinking of just letting them thaw a bit so I can rough up the top bit of soil, pour boiling watr over them to kill any weed seeds that most likely are in there and then just put a layer of fresh soil, sow my seeds cover and throw them back outside. Lazy woman's WSing...LOL!

The grade 1 and 2 gardeners at the school did some winter sowing today - 10 containers altogether. For seeds, they just about all chose scarlet flax, and the rest were spread out among sunflowers, bachelor buttons, marigolds and a wild flower mix. These will make for some interesting containers when they sprout! LOL

I'm done. I think. I've done 108 containers and I have no idea where I am going to put everything.

I just wanted to thank everyone that was so generous with seed trades this year, and you know who you are. I will now be able to join you all properly next year with reciprocation and be able to help some newbies, too. And as much as my competitive nature wants to tally more than all of you, realistically, I just don't have the room yet. Yes, there will be some new beds in future years, I know, but for now, this is wonderful. I would never, ever have been able to do all of this in my greenhouse.

Ian, will you post your numbers at the Winter Sowing Forum? They're aiming for some huge number of containers this year and falling short of the mark.

Hi Shauna,
I got it in trade for Himalayan Blue Poppy seed.
I know that itÂs a gamble but my only cost was for the mailer and the postage.

My final three WS containers just went out (yeah, I know I said I was done yesterday..... LOL)

All those Califoria poppies should put on a beautiful display. I have some orange ones from about 5 or 6 years ago that reseed every year. They're gorgeous and I just pull out the ones that grow in the grass and other places I don't want them to. They are quite the vigorous reseeders, but it's easy to pull them out.

I found some seeds i'd forgotten about - Savona's Danish Flag poppies, for one! - so i did them today. Also threw out some vine seeds that i had soaked but didn't sow inside. I mean, threw them into containers and THEN threw them outside!

You know, Marcia, you've really got me thinking. I've had my thunbergia and canary vine soaking for the last couple of days. I've also got cypress vine, 4 types of morning glories and moonflower to do. I've planted both mina lobata and cup an saucer vine into 20" pots with tomato cages already. They are doing wonderfully. I really don't want to battle any more vines in the greenhouse - it's just too small. Maybe I should just throw all of the other ones into 10" pots and put them out, too. Then transplant the whole pot into the ground when the time comes.

Convinced!!! It's on my "to do" for tomorrow. Thanks, Marcia. (I'm a pushover in an argument, too. lol)

I ended up buying a few more packs of seeds today. My favourite $-Store had new seeds on the rack that weren't there before, so ofcourse they jumped into my basket! LOL So, in other words I did a few more containers today.
