I'm having same problem with those colors. What really makes me aggravated is when I have a true pink and it turns out a little peachy when uploaded to the computer. I sent a support question to Canon - I'll see how the next group of pics turn out in a few days, after it quits raining.

Let me tell you what works for me most of the time. If you give your camera something totally white to focus on, you'll be surprised how true the dl's colors will be. I take a plain sheet of printer paper out with me and hold it next to the bloom and let the camera focus in on the paper and the bloom, then remove the paper from the view but leave the camera focused and snap the shot. Sounds complicated but it's really not hard to do at all. Give it a try and see what ya'll think. :)

Here's an interesting story I participated in several years ago. My daughter had given my daughter-in-law and
me pieces of VELVET SHADOWS. All of us were complaining
about the color on our pictures, it was awful. We all had
the plant blooming at the same time so decided to take pics
and compare. We all would take one and email to the others. Nothing looked very much like the originals. It
happened that I got a new camera---EUREKA, I'VE GOT IT. I
gave them the ISO that was set on my camera when I got it,
they set theirs and we all three had pictures that looked
like our flowers.

I watch that very carefully now and have much nicer pictures. My daughter-in-law sells pictures for publications.

Hope this doesn't sound preachy, but I see absolutely nothing wrong with using Photoshop to correct lighting issues or to correct the color to what your eye really saw when you took the picture.Everyone knows this, but the time of day the picture is taken is such a huge factor in color accuracy. If it is possible to avoid direct sunlight, your color and lighting are going to be so much more accurate than they would be otherwise.

Some cameras will correct for light conditions such as sunny, overcast, neon, incandescent, and even reflected light.

Check your manual!

I have a Canon Rebel XTi, and I use those features a great deal when color needs to be reliable.

Holding a small White umbrella over the bloom(s), between the Sun and the bloom will allow your light meter to set itself correctly for your point and shoot.

I also use the Canon EOS Rebel which does have the auto correction, but over exposed pictures are still a problem when shooting in brilliant mid-day sun. I have used the white photography filters ( and white umbrellas) but those aren't so easy when you're shooting alone. Will still tell the NC Daylily club I'm speaking to tomorrow ( on photography) to try to take their pictures early AM before direct sunlight hits when possible!

True Floota......but life ain't always easy.....Of course early morning light is best. But many Dalily blooms do not reach their full colour potential and bloom maturity till much later in the day. Thus the White (SMALL) umbrella. You can get these that you use with 2 fingers. Sometimes to get what you are after you have to do things in a bit harder to do...way. Or only buy Daylilies that reach full bloom and colour saturation by earl early am......LOL like that would happen......Good Luck

It is a problem when you have no choice but to be out in mid/afternoon bright sun - this week on the National tour, I'm sure that the early garden pictures will be a lot better than the late afternoon ones. That's just the way it is. Garden tour shots are usually the worst, regrettably.

Probably a silly question but why is the color in the early AM the correct color? For many of my friends the color of the daylily is the one they see after getting home from work in the PM. Maybe posting the AM and PM color would be a more accurate representation of the daylily variety....But I find this a really interesting discussion. Big differences on how the camera sees the colors. What about printing pictures? What kind of printers give you all the truest colors?

Glad you posted this as I was starting to think my eyes were going when viewing some photos.
I will try Jan and Rick's suggestions and see what the results turn out like.

Great post. Thanks so much. I have found lowering the exposure to work best for me -- of course, avoiding full sunlight --using cloudy days, light shade, early morning light, or a one-stop filter (a semi-transparent thing I hold). Even early morning direct sunlight can be too much for close ups, unless I adjust exposure down.

CRANBERRY BABY was always one of my old favorites. It's an old Stamile. Still a great color and early.

For me, I have to use most of the tricks you guys listed, because I never know when the flowers are going to be at their best. Some are open early, some in the afternoon etc. For me the ISO is always different depending on the day (bright sunshine vs. bright overcast glare).

Jan - I have used the white paper thing inside for capturing true colors, but never even thought to do that outside! Good one...

Floota - I don't see anything wrong with using Photo Shop either if you are really trying to represent the flower properly and not trying to jazz it up/make it look better/whiter/bluer/brighter etc. Really, the reason I try to get things right on my camera instead of in Photo Shop, is that I can't compare the flower to the picture when using the program, but I can do that right on my camera screen. I mean, I DO have a laptop but I don't want to drag it all over the back yard! :o)

Maryl - I think when talking about the "true" color, for me, it would be when the flower is at its very best (open fully, but not wilted or already faded by the sun). Kind of like when people take pictures of me... I prefer not to be photographed right after working in the garden! :o) I am a bit wilted. As for printing... whoa, that is another whole matter. Don't know anything about that, as I usually don't print my flower photos.

You already know which one I love, the just right picture of CRANBERRY BABY. Yummy!

We are most unhappy with our Epson photo printer - just tried to print those vibrant red flowers and they came out maroon in the picture. Ink is brand new. We are thinking about getting a new one as this one is a few years old. Would appreciate some recommendations.

Can some of you tell me what the ISO should be and under what conditions? I can adjust it but not in the Automatic setting of my Canon A590 IS.
I experimented last year a lot with my camera and the colour of my photos because the wrong colour really bugs me. I tried everything until I thought the colour was as close as I could get it. But I am not sure I learned anything and seemed to have to keep playing around with it every time until the colour was right. I used all different settings from manual to automatic but I don't thimk I changed the ISO and I don't think I did anything with the white balance. It can be changed to automatic(AWB), daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, FLourescent, Flourescent H and Custom. Any suggestions?
I would like my picture taking to go faster this year!

We love the Canon i9900. The colors are phenomenally true.

I don't know if the newer Canon printer is as true as this one.
