Smooth vs Rustic Backsplash - Pic Comparison

Since my kitchen is so white (Staturieto marble, cabs etc) I wanted to break up and make more warmth.

So we decided to try something different when grouting the backsplash and left it sloppy and with the beveling filled in for a more rustic and warm look.

I really liked it but the majority here on Garden Web said it didn't work... See thread:

http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg0820395111491.html

Although I really liked it, I came home one day and found that DH had scraped it all off out to see if I would like it better smooth. He was also concerned my having to clean so much grout (although its not over any cooking areas).

So now I'm back to the "technically correct" look for the smooth tile that everybody said was ideal. But I think I prefer it before. Perhaps we will either grout in the beveling again or find some other way to add character. Any ideas?

Now that you can see both side by side which do you honestly prefer?
