Wahooo! Today I finally got my dugout dug!

Here it is all finished.

It's hard to tell the size from the pic, but it's about 50'x75' and about 10' deep. It's going to make watering the gardens sooo much easier next year. I can hardly wait. I'll definitely be doin' the Happy Dance!

Thanks,Josh and edweather. Yeah, I've read Al's recipe so much I can recite it in my sleep. :0) But to be sure that I'm on the same page with you: 5 parts pine bark fines 1 part sphagnum peat moss 1-2 parts perlite (coarse) dolomitic lime (no quicklime) 1 Tbsp per gallon/1/2 cup per cu. ft. Following your suggestion, I was able to locate 1/2" hardware cloth; didn't realize I needed so had never inquired about it locally. Now I'll be able to keep the size of the pine bark fines under the threshold. But my original question had more to do with the "fineness" of the fines to be used and the wide suggestions I've read in this forum led to my question. Like you, many suggest using 1/2" (or 3/8" in some instances) down to dust. Then here are those that warn against using anything less than 1/16", citing the increased water retention as the particle size decreases. (edweather: I can appreciate your use of the dust to prevent too fast drainage.) Others state that the bulk of the bark be in the 1/16"-1/8" range, with more emphasis on the larger size, also citing the water retention concern, as well as noting that perched water disappears with particles just under 1/8" (I believe 1/10" was mentioned.) So I reckon the concensus is that there is no concensus.:0) Josh: my son-in-law has promised to teach me the art of uploading pictures, per your request, in an effort to bring me into the twenty-first century!! So sorry to hear about this - how frustrating! This sounds like my kind of luck. May of this past year, we hit a deer, which totaled our van. We searched forever for a good used van (since the insurance company didn't give us much for ours - it was older, but in mint condition). Our financial situation is not in a position to add another monthly payment. Finally in August we found one that "worked" - although we weren't sure about buying a Chevy. But I needed one by fall, when my craft shows started, so we decided to get it. We got it on Sunday afternoon and Monday I drove it to town and got whammed in the rear end. We hadn't even had the title work done yet. I was sick. But it was fixable and I wasn't hurt - so it all worked out. So glad Carol wasn't hurt anymore than she was - been there done that - triple Advil every 4-6 hrs. was the dr. advice for me - that is prescription strenth. We got hit with 8 or more inches of snow this weekend and as we were shoveling/clearing the drive/sidewalks, I asked my husband if he could imagine climbing on the roof and shoveling it! We just replaced that roof 2 summers ago and I will attest that it was SCAREY being up there when it was dry, let alone snow covered and slippery! I can't even imagine. Thanks for the suggestions. This looks like a shoe rack, but the shoes would have to be a size 18 or so. I looked at the store display businesses online and didn't see one. It may have been custom made for a particular business. There are lots of store display items that would work for something like this. The curves can be sawed off to use it for a bottle tree or something else. I'll probably plant some plants in it besides the empty pots, and hadn't thought of the coconut hair. It would work nicely. Thanks for the weed cloth tip. Sounds like a good idea for any of these basket type plantings. Storing dolls or animals on it would be fun. They could be climbing every which way on it. It would be a good clothes line also. If we can get it together soon enough we may light it up in the front yard for Christmas. I spray painted it green today and will post a photo tomorrow on this thread. It looks a lot better already. It comes apart just by unthreading it off the pole. There are 3 sets of 2 levels. They're pretty stable and could be used separately on posts or a tabletop. It's amazing how many great ideas people here come up with. Now who wants to go on a dumpster store rack hunt, lol?! Today, I recovered all of my data from my old PC. Fortunately, I have 28 years of experience with computers and new what to do-- Longer story: The reason that I thought all was lost is because .... We bought TWO different external drive enclosures so I could mount the drive onto the new Mac to transfer the data. BOTH had bad controllers! Our THIRD external drive enclosure worked and it only took me 7 minutes to get all of my photos over to my Mac. What are the chances that we'd buy TWO bad devices? I worked for hours trying to get those things to work and they were faulty. We made the store test the 3rd one today before we came home. I love the new Mac and Time Machine. iPhoto is great for organizing photos and adding keywords. Better organized. Our network is still having problems. AT &T sent us a new modem that didn't work. They are coming out tomorrow to see what they can do to fix the network issues.

That is great news Laurie, now how will you get the water out of there to water your gardens, do you use a pump too?

Congratulations on your Christmas present! I bet you have a big smile on your face these days!!

Now, to get some water in the dugout. How far is it from the garden? Did he dig a trench from the dugout to the garden for you to bury your waterline also while he had the back hoe there that day? If he didn't you can always rent a trencher for the day and do it yourself. Burying the waterline makes it so much easier for mowing and also for the frosts in the fall. Let's see...then you could have posts with taps on them all along the garden so all you have to do is attach the hose and turn on the tap. I am sure your DH has lots of plans as to how the water will be distributed around your yard. If he needs to see pictures of what my DH did for us just let me know.

Congratulations on your dugout Laurie! That will definitely make things easier for you next year with watering. Would goldfish survive in it all year? That might be neat to consider.

Uh, yeah Shauna, I'll send ya a BIG box of those!LOL

I'm not sure how well goldfish would do in there Syreeta, but I suppose buying a handful of feeder goldfish and throwing them in, would help to keep the mosquito population down. If they didn't make the winter, it wouldn't be a big deal.

Brenda, the dugout is just on the other side of our shelterbelt from the backyard. We won't be burying the waterhose as it would chew up a ton of tree roots in the process. So the hose would just run through the shelterbelt where there's no grass anyway. I'm not sure how DH will be setting up the hoses yet, but I'm sure he's got something in mind. He says he can get a hold of two sprinklers that were used on a golf course, and with these hooked up to 2" hoses would be able to do some really serious watering!!

Yes, Sharon we've got a water pump that was used to pump the water off of the truck when we hauled in water for the garden. Now DH will just have to show me how to use the thing! And we'd better not get any of that white stuff for a while yet. Although, we will be needed lots of it to help fill the dugout now ;^)

Marcia, my boys already have had the swimming pool idea! That is precisely why there will be a snow fence all around it :^) Actually, the backhoe operator was filling the boy's heads of a skating rink come winter. Hmmmm, how do you go up and down a ladder wearing skates? Better yet, how do you get a snow-blower down 10' this winter?lol May have to wait til next winter for the rink.:)

Our kids sometimes skated on the beaver pond, but when they got older they were too lazy to shovel the snow off. If yours want to shovel, go for it - you may end up with future NHLers!
