insults and compliments

I got this post idea from another forum on a different subject.

Have you ever been insulted about your plants or garden?

I am sure everyone has at least once. Gardens that are more relaxed in style, like Cottage, always get some kind of sneer. Some people seem to think that a gardener who is not meticulous must be lazy and plants that are untrimmed or have got to seed are messy.

My naturalistic kind of garden has gotten several snubbs. Several people have disliked my overgrown trees and shrubs, which I only prune if absolutly necessary. I just don't see why they have to be whacked back if they are not hurting anything.

Then there are those that are the 'row of annuals' sort of gardeners that outwardly show disdain for anything that sheds a leaf.

I think the worst insult I have had about my garden/plants has come from an unfortunantly near relative on several occasions. These insults range from attacks against general untidy-ness of the garden to the ugliness of a plant (several being my prized plant posessions). I was cut to the quick when she turned her nose up at my beloved Thalictrum rochebrunianum.

Now on to the nicer...What are some of your favorite compliments you have gotten about your garden?

I am happy to say that I have gotten many more compliments than insults. Several contractors (giving estimates on projects) have admired the garden. One even went so far as to say he was happy to see someone in the area that actually had a garden.

Then there was the nice young lady (whoes husband was in Iraq) who liked the flowers. I made sure she went away with a truck-load of plants. And I will never forget the young-ish man from the power company (who came to mark the gas lines) who took a tour of the yard. He was quite keen on the violets in the lawn.

The greatest complement I have ever recieved was from a little old lady. Several years ago we had a party here for a family friend's daughter who was getting married. We had all of her female family and friends over. Her husbands great-grandmother (who immigrated with her parents from England) said my garden reminded her of the ones she used to play in as a child back in England. My gardens were still pretty young then, so you can imagine how grateful I was to hear that.

And I cannot forget all of my CG friends who never fail to have a nice thing to say. ;-)

So, what about you? What insults and compliments have you recieved about your own garden?
