I don't know why anyone would consider that insulting. Just by saying a daughter looks like her father doesn't mean she looks like a man.....it just mean she resembles him. Some people are too sensitive.

Sorry, but I think your in-law's reaction is really odd.

Now, it might be insulting if someone said slyly (and maybe with a wink), "Your kid doesn't look one bit like his father."

Or if they said - your daughter looks like the mailman...LOL!

Not at all....my daughter looks just like her dad, and I always remind her how pretty she is.

I am told all the time I look and act just like my father...I consider it to be a compliment. Sometime these comments come from people that have known him most of his life, but never really spoke to me...sometimes it comes from my mother, as in "you act just like your father" (that is usually not in a complimentary tone...hehe)

I've often thought that babies look most like their fathers for the first few months. Nature is clever that way. (wink-wink)

I grew up with everyone telling me I looked like my father. I would always wonder how a little girl could look like a man. My father died when I was 24 and then I had friends who never knew my dad and told me how much I looked like my mom. LOL. I think I resemble my mom more than my dad.

I was told I looked like my Dad. I considered it a compliment....especially since I was adopted. Never would think it was because I looked like a man. That's absurd.

When I was little people told me all the time how much I looked like my Dad. Once I got into my teens it all changed. I was actually at work one day when my Dad came in to give me a ride home. He stood there looking at me funny and then just smiled. He told me he could not believe how much like my Mom I looked at that moment. Now, keep in mind, they had a very nasty divorce and he NEVER spoke about her. At that time she had been dead for about 8 years or so. When ever I see family now they all claim I look much more like my Mom still. But back to the point, it never bothered me to look like my Dad. I thought he was kinda handsome!

No insult. Like someone else said, they aren't saying the girl looks manly, just has some of the same features. My friend just had a baby girl in Jan and she looks JUST like her older brother, but in a more feminine way.

Alisande, I did comment about it one day. The response was "Well no one wants to look like their dad." Like I posted earlier, my father is attractive so it wouldn't have bothered me to look like him.

I surely wouldn't be insulted. I've been told many times that I have lips like my Dads.

liz_ga -- I know what I said could cut more than one way. I meant that "Daddy" needs to attach to this little baby when it's born. He isn't as 'connected' as "Mom" is. He hasn't been carrying it for nine months. It isn't as *real* to him until it's born. When he first SEES the baby it helps if he sees a resemblance. It helps him attach to and 'claim' the baby.

I most strongly resembled my father up to middle age; my skin even *smelled* like him. Now it's my mother and her paternal grandmother I see in the mirror.

That just seems so weird. I can't imagine the reason for them thinking it's insulting. Huh?

I look like my mother, and my younger daughter looks like me. My older daughter looks like a combination of my DH (her father) and my father (her Grandfather).

That's just plain silly. A child is made of half mother, half father...I can't imagine it being an insult to say she looks like one half of her DNA. Weird if you ask me.

My husband's daughters (my step daughters) both look like him. And thank goodness, lol!!

I can't see any legitimate reason for such an attitude.

Same gender, so not precisely a parallel, but ... one day when I was about 4, I think, a neighbour saw me in the country general store and, when my Dad was in another part of the store, is reported to have said that, "Dick Baker will never be dead as long as you're alive".

Youngest brother and I look a lot like Dad, and middle brother more like Mom and her family.

Why would it be an insult?
We are all part of our parents plus relatives and we do look like them or have characteristics of them.

And it could be that its your dad or grandfather or uncle for a girl to be compared too.

A friend of mine, her oldest girl looked exactly like her dad and nothing wrong with that at all.

People that say that are insulting the father alot as why shouldn't he have a girl that looks like him or has his characteristic and hear others say you are just like your father. It shouldn't be shameful at all.

You have to look like one or the other I do I look like my dad....

My mother and my aunt say I am a clone of my father.

I've never met him, except to look in the mirror.

My father's friends always said I looked like him. I do have his coloring. I did wonder as a young girl if they were saying that I was not feminine, but I did note that Dad's friends said I looked like him and Mom's friends sometimes commented that I looked like her.

This is just another example of how so many people aren't happy unless they can be insulted by something! How many times do we see this!

Just depends on what part of my dad I take after. I don't know to many beauty queens. We take what we have and enhance it with makeup.
Dads dumbo ears, giganto chin, no neck. Got to smile and be the best you can be. Then no one will care about the rest.

I would say someone didn't know how to phrase the statement to come out complimentary for YOU. Kinda like the leftovers. Not very thoughtful but if you love your dad the way he is I'd say take it as a compliment. Sometimes we draw the short end of the stick, it could be worse though.

Well, I look like my Dad and when I was a teenager I really disliked being told I looked just like my Dad. My Dad was big man, with a big red round face and a bald head. LOL I unfortunately inherited the big red round face. Most of my siblings look more like my Mom.
