OK...so the pool leaks and you're saving for a new liner. In the meantime, it's cold and wintry and you have to stare at that big empty hole.

...OK, it's actually worse than that. You have to stare at the big empty hole, you love Brugs and never have enough room for them, and you're planning on going into business this year.

Thank you for your time and contributions. I'm the only girl in a family of 6. I have 5 great brothers and often wish I had been born a boy as well. Happy though that my dad got his wish for a girl and I was in his life until he passed away when I was 13. Growing up I spent most of my time with my brothers doing "boy" things and I really enjoyed it. I tried having "girlfriends" but all they did was hang out with me because they had crushes on my brothers. When I did establish a "friendship" those girls stabbed me in the back with lies and name calling. I've had really great friends as I grew older, in my late teens I had two really great friends that I knew I could trust with anything. One moved, married and had kids - we lost touch with one another, the other one passed away. More friends and more dissapointments as I grew older. A week before my wedding a "friend" called and said she wouldn't be going to the wedding and our relationship was over. I didn't get that. A couple years later when she wanted to be friends again she apologized and said she was jealous that I was so happy. At 38 it was my first marriage, she'd already been married and had a son. I let her back in my life slowly. Her son died unexpectantly and she attempted suicide. I tried to help her and did all I could for a couple of years but eventually had to get out of that relationship as it was wearing on me both physically and emotionally. Another friend who was married with kids was truly a unique individual. I really treasured what we had until she started having extramarital affairs and expected me to remain quiet about that. I had to back out of that relationship and to my surprise she passed away last year. I've concluded that growing up with 5 brothers and no sisters that perhaps I don't understand women. I have no patience for gossip and lies, for manipulation and so many of the qualities I've seen in so many women over my life. I tend to tell it as it is but I would never want to offend or hurt someone with words or actions. I try to live an exemplarary life both socially and professionally. I do have standards. I don't like bad language and will ask customers that come into my office to refrain from using bad language in front of me if they are swearing. I do it tastefully and have never had it backfire on me. I could go on and on about "friends" but I won't. The reason I pondered this question in the first place is that I had learned something on Monday about my former boss who I'd been friends with for more than 20 years. A man this time. I worked for him for 11 years when he retired in Dec. of 2013. The whole time I worked for him I never questioned his actions or motives etc. I had a great deal of respect for him and I knew I could trust him just as he knew he could trust me. A few of the last years we worked together our agency earned a bonus. When the bonus was announced he sat down with me (and Hubby - we both worked for him) and said that he would split the bonus with us because he wouldn't have gotten it without us. So to make a very long story short we recently found out that the bonus amounts weren't exactly split. We were led to believe we were receiving 50% when in fact it was less than 15%. We are talking 100k in bonus. I never questioned his generosity with sharing the bonus with us and to how much the actual take was. I knew he was trustworthy and wouldn't screw us. Boy was I wrong. It's money and when you work hard for someone for 11 years and trust that person the way we did, this was hard to swallow. I haven't decided if this friendship is over or not. He retired and will travel this year so it's not like I will see him. I stay in touch with them through facebook but nothing else for the time being. Friends just keep dissapointing me and sometimes I just don't see the need for it. I think I need to focus on this some more. Thank you again.

New pool -- DE filter needing backwashing every 5-6 hours?

Thanks. I am happy to be patient if I know itÃ¯Â¿Â½s all normal. I was just thrown off since itÃ¯Â¿Â½s not what they said to expect and certainly not consistent with the amount of DE they left me that was supposed to last the full two weeks until they return Ã¯Â¿Â½ I already had to buy more after 3 days since I an burring through 10 lbs. a day still. In fact after what is really 2.5 days (it was first setup Friday mid-day) and itÃ¯Â¿Â½s Sunday night now, it is getting progressively worse. I backwashed it just 90 minutes ago and got it back to the default 18 psi. Now it is already to 26. On the first day it raised about 1 psi an hour, now it just raised 8 psi in 90 minutes. And the time before it was in-between, so it is rising faster every time now. At this rate I will need to start getting up in the middle of the night to backwash it since it wonÃ¯Â¿Â½t be able to survive the night (they have it running 24 hours for two weeks). Can you explain the drain part Ã¯Â¿Â½ they didnÃ¯Â¿Â½t show me that when they walked through how to do it or even point out the part. They only showed me how to turn the filter on/off, adjust the backwash values and put in the DE (though they did that wrong and I had to figure it out from the instructions on the DE bag). The filter is a Jandy with 48 effective sq. ft. of filtration area. They have me putting in 5 lbs of DE every time I backwash. The Backwash slide value is also Jandy.

How did a question about wasting turn into a slam-fest? Everyone does things that are wasteful as well as conservative. I still have old lightbulbs that have not burned out yet, and CFLs in the ones that have. I have a plasma TV, a new microwave, a jacuzzi and a crockpot. The crockpot is used around 1-2 times a month and I love it in those instances. I drive a truck, don't have a clothesline and use my air conditioner. I recycle religiously. I conserve water, pick up trash in parking lots, give anything away that could possibly be used again, use freecycle and drag my scrap paper from work home (with my boss's permission)for my daughter to color on. I turn off lights if I'm not in the room. I turn off the water when I brush my teeth. I also fly back to my homestate of Hawaii 2600 miles away(and fly my daughter back) using tons of jet fuel. Before we throw stones at our neighbors try googling Al Gore's house and George Bush's house for a shocking comparison of energy waste/conservancy. It just goes to show we all make choices. Acknowledging that we are making a choice when we expend/reduce energy use is the first step towards using less. That person who uses old bulbs and a crockpot may recycle everything, drive 50 miles a month in a tiny car and not use plastic. As a side note, I grew up 30 miles from the nearest town, where we didn't have a Wal-mart/Kmart/Costco or anything similar. Due to bad roads it took over an hour to get there, once we made the 1/2 hour trip down our 4wd road to get to the highway. We had catchment tanks for water, and the water went right down the sink and onto the trees on the side, outhouses, solar and kerosene for light. I got my clothes from the "free box" at our local co-op, and we bought our food in bulk. We had no refrigerator/freezer/television/radio/appliances except for a gas stove, and that was used by ten or so people in a community kitchen. The shower was a hose attached to a tree. When we got hot water, it was from a paloma, and we took "Navy" showers. (Some habits die hard, I still take 5 minute showers and turn the water off when shaving, etc). Our homes were made out of recycled lumber and bamboo, with every scrap used. We'd go to town once a week for supplies, and we'd carpool with neighbors to get there. You may be imagining someone living like this pre- 1950. I'm 30. I've lived in San Diego for two years now and enjoy having air conditioning. I think that frugality is only as good as quality of life. Awareness and compassion for why people are living the lives they choose is essential. When people tease me for saving every last drop of water I remind them the mentality I grew up with...When you are constantly conscious that the water you are using can be depleted and there is no way to get a water truck to fill the tank up you use a lot less! Sorry.... I just grew up more frugal than most people could ever imagine, so the argument about bulbs, etc. is just silly to me. Try using a kerosene lantern at night to do anything. We got everything done during daylight hours, believe me! Wear them until they're standing on their own, then wash clothes by hand, wring them out with a foot powered wringer. Don't use any pesticides, herbicides, anything not organic. Wash your hair with fresh Awapuhi ginger. Live in harmony with the bugs around you... misquitoes, cockroaches (we'd call them B-52 bombers), you name it- and the way we killed them was with our feet and hands. This was in the rainforest, with 100' trees, 1-2' vines, giant tree ferns. There was mold. On everything. So, after venting! The waste I see every day (personal pet peeves): 1. Watering giant lawns that no one ever sits on 2. Private swimming pools 3. Eating food out of season 4. Throwing away plastic containers

nicole: thank you we are trying. It seems every 5 yrs or so we have big projects. We are going to have to re-do the wall around the pool also and are trying to figure out how to do it w/o ruining the plants on the inside. Always something. val: almost everyone around the area is hurting for work. That said my GC charged these rates 9 years ago when he did the attic...he deserves more but I don't have it so this works for us both. beachlily: that is quite an undertaking. My " real" painter that I used for the whole interior 9 and 5 yrs ago was amazing. But his health is not good and he is 2x as much per hour. Now that I have this new to me painter I may well do some more interior painting. He is extremely careful and hardworking. I hope you post pics of before and after. oakley: you too are lucky ! I am doing the cutting in of the ceiling today. Will see how much I get done. prill: the people I met last year are about the best part of the trip. Everywhere we went there were so many fascinating stories. We stop about every 2 hrs . We try to pick Mom and Pop places. Unfortunately in this " fast moving" world many of them are closing for lack of business. The interstate has changed the U.S. I look forward to the joy of listening to folks tell us about themselves again this year. I will send in reports as I am able again this year. c

Liz, Great use of space and really nice plants. Is Chris someone that we know? Has he started selling yet? Is he going to sell to the public or wholesale? Oh, by the way , He is WAY to organized. Makes me ashamed of myself. Now I'll have to try harder, I guess. Probably not.

What a great idea! I'd love to do that but they only drain our pool partway to winterize it. There's still a couple feet of water left. Actually I'd love to just fill the damn thing in and have more space for plants.

Hi Bill! Chris is new to the Brugmansia growing community, but he isn't new to me. :) YES! He will be selling this season. What you don't see here is the hundreds of cuttings he has prepared for the this coming Spring. He has those in two other locations.
I've been working behind the scenes for almost a year, encouraging members of the Brug community to go into business and learn responsible plant and customer care. I think all of us have been well aware that there have been major problems with uneducated and/or unscrupulous eBay sellers. In the recent past, there have only been a handful of sellers we could depend on. All of that is over. Come spring, you will have at least a dozen new resources for plants. This can only benefit the Brug growing community, as it will encourage competitive pricing that will benefit everyone that loves and grows our favorite plant.

In addition to new retailers, I was able to distribute close to 10,000 seeds, either by sale or donation, to growers worldwide. More countries have the opportunity to grow new cultivars and establish the acceptance and growth of Brugmansia - that until now had either no Brugmansia or limited access to them. Those countries include: Canada, France, Denmark, Russia, Bulgaria, Norway, Spain, England, Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil, Guam, some Pacific Islands, Australia, and many others. This year, I would love to get seed into Japan, China, Southeast Asia and The Middle East.

So, there's good news all around!

Kathy, my pool developed cracks a couple of years ago so I emptied it. Just yesterday a guy from the county/city came by to see if there was any mosquito larvae in the pool so he could spray the water (there's about 4-5' accumulated from rain). I mentioned wanting to have the pool drilled (holes so the water won't accumulate) and then filled with dirt. He said it's illegal without first going through a lot of paperwork for approval. Long story short, we talked about empty pools popping up out of the ground, so it's best for me to keep the water in the pool to weigh it down. Since we pay for a monthly spraying during mosquito season with our house taxes, might as well use that service and keep the water in the pool. When a pool is empty, it can move upwards cracking the deck and then it will literally pop out of the ground and destroy whatever decking/cement is on top.

Eloise, so THAT'S why a neighbor's house, foreclosed on after he died a couple of years ago, isn't drained - it is FULL of frogs and they twitter ALL NIGHT LONG! LOL

The city sprays the pool every so often, to control mosquitoes. NOW, I understand why my constant nagging about emptying it didn't provide results - THANKS!
