If I remove any seed pods, they won't cross, right?

With this new DL bed that I'm making (see Max's pic), I'd like to leave it with the ones that I CHOSE to put in there (or take out, as the case may be to replace with new faces). I don't want half-breeds in there messing up the place.

Friday's stupid question: If I take off any seed pods that might show up, that'll solve the problem, yes? I mean, they aren't going to be playing footsies under the soil and doing hanky-panky that way, right?

You're right. Remove any seed pods that form before they split and spill seeds and you won't get any new hybrids.

leave the pods to rippen ,harvest the seeds when the pod starts to open, air dry the seeds put them in veg. draw in refrigerator.plant in spring ,those halfbreeds may be a better flower than the ones you have. think about this it takes two or more of the halfbreeds to come up with the flowers you have.

Another great deer repellent is irish spring body wash, the liquid stuff. Mix this with water in a sprayer. Works Great! And one thing I have learned is to alternate your repellent from week to week. Deer get used to a scent, so you need to trick 'em. I've got four pods collected and more coming. The four are. 'Pres. Johnson' x self 'Pres. Hi Elizabeth, I never did get any seed to set on LaPaz but the pollen did work well on Ruby Meyer.I think every single one of 100 seeds germinated and is growing pretty well. About 75% have the dark red blush on the leaves from Ruby Meyer but the faster growers are the 25% green leafed. It is sending up another scape so I will give it another try with a different set of partners.I have to say LaPaz is not one of my favorites,I much prefer Ruby Meyer.I did not self Ruby Meyer. Misty neither set seed nor pollinated anything viable last year. I have no clue as to it's parentage but it could be a triploid. I will of course try again, it has a pretty face and I can see it looking very nice with several crosses. Emerald,if I remember correctly,did not produce viable seed. It did pollinate Ruby Meyer and Pink Floyd. The seedlings are growing ok but not a tremendously vigorus cross. Since it's a papilio cross it just might give you some seed in combination with Exotic Star or papilio improved. If you would like some pollen to play with just let me know. Cross-pollinated, but won't bloom

It has taken several of my seedlings three years to bloom because of drought conditions. If you have not been regularly watering them, especially in July, August and September, they may not be ready to bloom yet. The other considerations would be: Do they get enough sun? They need at least 6 hours of sun a day. Are they buried too deep? If the crowns are deeper than one inch they may not bloom. Sometimes the plants sink down in the soil over time, and the crowns are too deep to bloom. How big are the fans you have now, and have the fans multiplied? They may not be mature enough to bloom. Also, you may have created some late blooming daylilies. Not all daylilies bloom at the same time. Good luck with the plants, and let us know when you see scapes. Debra

Your pods are fine. As they dry they will get lighter and eventually start to crack open. If you don't want the seeds to fall out you can wrap the pod in a fine mesh, or keep checking them and harvest just as they start to open. The seeds will be smooth and pale brown at first but will dry dark and wrinkly like the ones in your picture. As long as they have some thickness to them I think they can sprout - nothing ventured... Plant them 1 inch deep in pots and leave outside all winter, they should sprout in early spring. Right, which means eventually, I could have 2/3 half-breeds, and 1/3 good, named DLs. And of those 2/3 half-breeds, potentially 1/2 of those or more will be duds.

How about I just send them to you, beau? Interested? I really am not interested in them at all.

I hybd. every seed has a potential of being a different flower, if it wasnt for those halfbreeds you wouldnt have the ,reg. verities or named verities you have today , I have aprox 1000 plants with a few 100 more started , perhaps you should learn more on genetics ,which goes into the dna of flowers,flower pigments ,such as anthocyanins,flavons,carotenes or mads, proteins that control structural development of the bloom. The seeds dont play hanky panky under the dirt , the bees do it or you do it with pollin.There has been only three flowers that I donot care for and none of those were mine .the patterns on your flowers along with the edges are nothing but mutations caused by cross breeding the daylilie ,think abuut it , Then try hybd and see what you can do 3 or 5 years down the line.

But Dick, there those people who appreciate their daylilies as a garden plants and aren't interested in hybridizing. After all, if it wasn't for the collectors, the hybridizers wouldn't have a job!
I eliminate every pod I find on my plants without a hybridizing tag. It takes too much time, energy and money to bloom a seedling to risk it on unknowns.

well, if people dont want the seeds on their daylilies, I will gladly grow them out LOL I have 2 acres of space with lots of room to grow out seedlings ! Just let me know and I will send postage !

I do understand what mmqchdygg is saying though . Trying to keep the bed pristine with only named varieties .
